ferrgle Re:Sounds like someone 'famous' is out of cash (264 comments)

Can we just call it kickball?
That would remove all ambiguity and I think it sounds quite good to.

(Most people I suggest it to don't agree with me though, and get quite upset with me)

AT&T Lowers Data Access To Just $500/GB

ferrgle Re:for pete's sake (339 comments)

Owning a smart phone with a data plan isn't a human right. Don't want to pay that much for the data plan? Don't. Live without it. Billions do it every day.

If, on the other hand, you choose, of your own volition, to pay the exorbitant fee for the data plan, you only serve to prove that the pricing was reasonable and correct.

But the data wants to be free doesn't it?

New Phone Allows Bosses To Snoop On Staff

ferrgle Good for Cleaning contractors - not so good for IT (143 comments)

I'm thinking that it would be hard to snoop on IT workers this way. Unless the phone is moving when it shouldn't.
This is ideal though for cleaning contractors who need to make sure their cleaners are cleaning and not just leaving the vacuum cleaner on.

Xbox 360 Failure Rate Is 54.2%

ferrgle I'm suprised its only 50% (607 comments)

Most of my friends have opted for PS3s but out of 4 people I know with Xbox 360s 3 of them hav had the RROD. (two within the last week)
One of them is a very big game player.
He was the first one to have his 360 die on him.
He has played the PS3 at least as much and watched both bluray and other media on it.
The PS3 so far hasn't had an ounce of trouble.

The "Dangers" of Free

ferrgle Re:There's no such thing as free (242 comments)

For example, take the act of downloading and installing a piece of "free" software from the 'net. You spend time to download it. Time to work out how to install it and even time (hopefully beforehand) to read through it's features, bugs and abilities to find out if it will solve the problem you have.

So why does so much non-free software also include the process you just mentioned?

OK let me just change what you said for expensive software that I have had dealings with.

You spend time to talk to the salesman. Time to work out how to tell if he is lying and even time (hopefully beforehand) to read through it's features, bugs and abilities to find out if it will solve the problem you have.
You buy it and too late find out it doesn't do what you want.
You have spent a lot of money and time on this project and cannot look bad in front of your employees/bosses.
You make the best of the situation and have to pay high support costs to try to get the software working.

The "Dangers" of Free

ferrgle Re:Only businesses need a $-driven business model (242 comments)

Tell you what, why don't I hire you and have you work for free and then I will pay you what I think the end product is worth, m'kay?

I think you find that most people produce free (both terms) for themselves. They usually give it away to.
They don't tend to produce free sotware to make others (ie. YOU) money.

Although they might code something to offer people a free (both terms of the word again) alternative.

The "Dangers" of Free

ferrgle Free is really good advertising (242 comments)

My father wrote some software for a company.
They paid for it.
That was that.
I felt that others might want to use it.
Against most others advice we let it go free.
He is no poorer as he really wasnt going to advertise it and therefore sell it.
There is a new version that he wants to start to sell. Now he has a user base because we gave it away for free.
I think that free software helps small businesess to get software and grow and allows developers to prove that their software works.

I know I will get flamed for this post (due to being flamed in person by others) but it was the right thing to do under the circumstances.

83% of Businesses Won't Bother With Windows 7

ferrgle Re:XP is old (545 comments)

Oh...
Fair point.
Mind you could steal the admin password...of course, I did that once and had a written warning. That was the point when I decided that I had to become an admin. Much fun has ensued (from French ensuer, from Latin sequi to follow) since.

83% of Businesses Won't Bother With Windows 7

ferrgle Re:XP is old (545 comments)

not to mention a version of IE higher than 6.

Then why not install IE8 on XP?
Microsoft IE8 Page. Blah blah blah
The taskbar for Vista isnt good enough to upgrade to. Actually I switch between XP and Vista and don't find any real difference in using the taskbar other than instead of using run and search for opening up cmd etc.

Free or Free? That is the question

ferrgle ferrgle writes  |  more than 5 years ago

ferrgle writes "We have a free as in beer piece of software.
It is called Optilett X.
It is based on Microsoft Access and is a Database for Opticians.
It will stay free as in beer, but should we make the source available as well?

The problems with doing this are;
We have a newer version coming out soon that we want to sell.
It is based on Microsoft Access???
The programmer isnt keen on his code being viewed.

Does anybody think that it would be usefull to open this project up?"

Can you make a business out of Home Repair?

ferrgle ferrgle writes  |  more than 6 years ago

ferrgle writes "I have run a Computer Business for over 10 Years with my father. We started in 1997 mainly supporting Businesses with their Accounting applications. During that time I helped a few people with their home PC problems, but could never work out how to make money from it. The problem I always found was to make enough money I had to charge a lot per hour (about £50).

I split from my father in January (not due to any problems, just because we were focusing in different areas) and since then I have been trying to build up my work in the Home Market.

I offer a flat rate £70 no fix no fee service. All the customers I have had are really happy that I was able to help them and all the feed back has been positive so far.
What I want to ask is;
Am I charging the right amount? Have you got any suggestions on how to get the word out?

My website for home customers is at www.smartfoxit.co.uk
Feel free to let me know what you think of the site"

What Apple to buy

ferrgle ferrgle writes  |  more than 6 years ago

ferrgle writes "The Reg Hardware have got a good article from an independent Mac specialist about what's hot and what's not in Apple's current line-up.
Despite there only being five types of Mac in the range, each is offered in a number of variations, and Warren's lined them up so you can decide which model meets your needs.

It's a good article to read if you are thinking of getting advice on what Mac to get.
Of course you could just go to a computer shop and ask them, but you will probably end up buying a PC with Vista on!"

SANS Top 20 Security Risks 2007

ferrgle ferrgle writes  |  more than 6 years ago

ferrgle (945967) writes "The latest SANS Top 20 list is out.
Read it here at https://www2.sans.org/top20
Seven years ago, the SANS Institute and the National Infrastructure Protection Center (NIPC) at the FBI released a document summarizing the Ten Most Critical Internet Security Vulnerabilities. Thousands of organizations relied on that list, and on the expanded Top-20 lists that followed in succeeding years, to prioritize their efforts so they could close the most dangerous holes first.

It's a must read for all System Admins"

Need help for Sys Admin Day 2007

ferrgle ferrgle writes  |  more than 7 years ago

ferrgle writes "I run the UK version of System Administrator Appreciation Day website.
We need help this year to let as many people know about us as we can.
Last year we had over 6000 visits on the day and we want to do better on our 8th anniversary.

What we ask is that you send an e-mail to your local newspaper or radio station telling them about the celebration this year.
I know that as sys admins we are very busy, but we deserve a little credit for the hard work we (mostly) do.

We have less than 16 days left before we celebrate sys admin day on the 27th of July.
To help I have put some sample text on the UK sys admin day website on the Promote page.

Thanks in advance and I hope you can find time to have a good sys admin day party!"

ferrgle writes "I had a problem quite a while ago looking at www.linux.org
At first I thought that linux.org had just gone down.
I thought little of it, as I didn't really look at that site very much.
I did find, though, that next time I viewed the site (when I was at work) that it was fine.
When I came home that evening I tried again and once again I couldn't connect to linux.org.
Screenshot of Firefox error
Screenshot of IE error
This was quite a while ago (perhaps over a year) and I have only been able to look at linux.org once from my NTL connection.
This is what I have tried so far;
  • I CAN connect to linux.org using a proxy
  • I CAN connect to linux.org from my laptop using another ISP
  • I CANNOT look at the linux.org website from my laptop using my NTL cable connection from my flat
  • I CAN run tracert ( view the screenshot here ) to linux.org through my NTL connection
What I want to know is this, can other NTL users look at www.linux.org? Does anyone know why NTL is blocking this site?"
