Netflix Gets What It Pays For: Comcast Streaming Speeds Skyrocket

firex726 Re:I Pay (324 comments)

Netflix also offered to set up their server inside the Comcast DC's, that way there would be no peering, it'd be on the Comcast network all the time. Comcast declined.

Well there was the Coraline book that most people felt was a good adaptation, and he has written for Babylon 5 and Doctor Who which were also well regarded.

Same for movies too, sites like Amazon have a huge catalogue but I am just browsing then it's hard to beat an actual store.

Titanfall Dev Claims Xbox One Doesn't Need DX12 To Improve Performance

firex726 Re:Problem with releasing an underpowered console (117 comments)

Which was all the more odd when so many games still come out in only 720.
Seems like it takes a re-release to ensure it happens, otherwise it'll be 720 for the release copy.

Titanfall Dev Claims Xbox One Doesn't Need DX12 To Improve Performance

firex726 Re:Problem with releasing an underpowered console (117 comments)

Also of note...

PS1 to PS2 had DVD support at a time when TVs had only one input.
Then PS2 to PS3 had Bluray support at a time when a player could cost as much as the console itself.

Creationists Demand Equal Airtime With 'Cosmos'

firex726 Re:Whatabout we demand equal time of our views ins (667 comments)

And for each viewpoint...

So we got Christians, Atheists, FSM, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindu, Scientologists, etc... Keep things going and it'll only be like one second for each every service day.

Survey Finds Nearly 50% In US Believe In Medical Conspiracy Theories

firex726 Re:Jenny McCarthy (395 comments)

Well some do have a bit of truth to them...

The CIA did infect many Guatemalans with STDs without their knowledge or consent back in the 40's. They were trying to see if penicillin could prevent infections, not just cure it, so gave people the drug and disease and watched.

Top U.S. Scientific Misconduct Official Quits In Frustration With Bureaucracy

firex726 Re:Just like where I work ... (172 comments)

You can often see such a position argues in favor of having Private industry take over Public work in some areas.

> The Government is bloated and slow and has no incentive, but the Private sector is competitive and results driven, so they should manage our prisons, red light cameras, etc...

But then as it turns out the Private firm overestimated the cost savings and ends up cutting costs while costing the government the same or more for less quality service.

Google Sued Over Children's In-App Android Purchases

firex726 Re:Just call the credit card company and tell them (321 comments)

Regarding your example, there was likely something on the menu about having that gratuity added for parties over a certain size; so you pretty much committed theft.

If you don't like the rule and dont want to be committed to a tip regardless of service, eat someplace else. You don't get to change the rules of the establishment unilaterally on a whim. Otherwise I could decide when the check came I did not agree with the stated menu prices and only pay a fraction of them.

Google Sued Over Children's In-App Android Purchases

firex726 Re:Why? (321 comments)

It's a setting you can choose. By default it's like 5 or 15min, and as a parent you can change that to Always requiring a password.

California District Launches Country's First All-Electric School Bus

firex726 Re:Cool (94 comments)

Doubt there is anything for a bus like this, but if you look at a Prius there is quite a bit of data on the maintenance costs.

The rengertice breaking saves on brake pad wear, to the point that Toyota reports they don't need replacment till 100,000 miles. The Power Shift transmission has fewer gear sets, resulting in less wear on them, and has no clutch, CVT belt, or torque converter. Plus there is no timing belt, alternator, starter. And since the ICE is not running all the time it's experiences less wear and Toyota reports you don't need to replace the coolant till around the 8 year mark.

Of course this is countered by the lump sum of the battery and expensive dealership rates for when repairs are needed; but this wouldn't be a comparable factor on this kind of bus since you'd need the manufacturer to repair it regardless; and the poor MPG the old ones had would more then makeup the cost of a replacement battery years down the line.

Apple Refuses To Unlock Bequeathed iPad

firex726 Re:Privacy (465 comments)

Except by your reasoning the entire drive would need to be wiped before it could be turned over.
Any journals written by the person would also need to be erased somehow, since according to you, they turned over the journal not what was written in it.

Apple Refuses To Unlock Bequeathed iPad

firex726 Re:So they don't even have the Apple ID (465 comments)

It's also illegal to impersonate a solicitor/layer in both the US and UK; if it is a scam it went from petty theft to actual jail time and a $5000 fine.
Having one sign off is comparable to a Notary in the US witness and stamp a document.

Apple Refuses To Unlock Bequeathed iPad

firex726 Re:Good. (465 comments)

Hell, make it simpler, if someone leaves me their computer, does the drive need to be wiped and all the programs and OS repurchased, even if they came with the computer?

Will Peggy the Programmer Be the New Rosie the Riveter?

firex726 Re:Geez... (333 comments)

Yea, there was a Ruby workshop I was interested in attending; but seems it was only open to women.
If they felt men as a gender would be disruptive then that should be handled on an individual basis regardless of gender, and even then I find it hard to believe that it'd be a widespread issue.

As it stands, women probably have a far greater opportunity advantage from Diversity Quotas, Gendered Scholarships, and Classes. lsu many of the complaints can be attributed to the female dominated HR field; which has shown that women in HR will not hire other women they consider to be prettier then themselves.

The Emerging RadioShack/Netflix Debacle

firex726 Re:RS is liable (122 comments)

Same here, that's the only reason I got by RS now.

I might pay an inflated price, but it's still only $1 in store compared to $0.25 online; so no big deal.

Their less techinal stuff, like an audio exten cable, are just bullshit though; $20 for a 3' stereo cable, not even a Monster, it was RS's store brand.

ISP Fights Causing Netflix Packet Drops

firex726 Re:Net Neutrality laws? (289 comments)

Also Netflix has made the offer available to setup CDN servers in the local providers facilities to ease the BW usage on their peers. Google uses this; but Verizon, Time Warner, and Comcast do not, who then whine about the BW use.

The Ultimate Hopes For the New Cosmos Series

firex726 Re:There is at least hope. (183 comments)

Yea, plus if you've seen him on stage with his peers he can come off rather negatively.
There was that one panels he did a couple years back alongside Cox and Nye in which he kept interrupting Nye and arguing semantics throughout. By himself he's great, but along side people whose opinions mean the same as his and not so much.
