Did Google Knowingly Violate Java Patents?

garethw Probably (148 comments)

Who cares? How does Google's leveraging off Java deprive Sun revenue from its R&D? You know, like what patents are intended for? Fucking lawyers. Unable to create any real value themselves, they resort to contriving some for themselves by destroying it for many others. Utterly, utterly ignoble profession.

Mr. Pike, Tear Down This ASCII Wall!

garethw Re:Coding in other langugages? (728 comments)

I vaguely remember a meme - before we called 'em that - going around the net about how lots of Mexican immigrants were crossing the border and taking programming jobs, so they were coming with a new Spanish C language specification... por ( n = 0; n10; n++ ) { imprimaf( "Hola, el mondo!" ); }

Why Bad 3D, Not 3D Glasses, Gives You Headaches

garethw Re:Focus (255 comments)

While I agree with your general premise that 3D doesn't really work because your eye & brain know that the "3D", well, isn't, the main problem with Avatar, IMHO, was that it was an unfathomably shitty story. Three-dimensional images, one-dimensional characters.

PA Laptop Spying Inspires FSF Crowdsourcing Effort

garethw Crowdsurfing (135 comments)

Every time I see the word crowdsourcing, I read it as crowdsurfing. I, for one, try to avoid being near anywhere that RMS is crowdsurfing.

Apple Removes Wi-Fi Finders From App Store

garethw Re:Fouling the well (461 comments)

You're probably right. I bought a MacBook last year (having used Debian for the last 9 years), and while I don't dislike it, I'm not keen to buy more Apple products given dumb shenanigans like this. So they are alienating some users.

Apple Removes Wi-Fi Finders From App Store

garethw Fouling the well (461 comments)

I think this is called pissing in the well from which you drink. I really don't get why Apple is trying so hard to alienate developers. / Android user

What Has Your Phone Survived?

garethw Re:Why oh why are people so clueless? (422 comments)

Uhh, we're all in awe of your vast knowledge and tremble at the merest thought of your wondrous awesomeness, but (presumably) you didn't have power applied to the boards you were soldering. Bridging a few pins to power or ground rails with some not-entirely pure water can and does damage ASICs. Why are you being so smug about it, anyway?

What Has Your Phone Survived?

garethw Bounced Treo 650 down 2 flights of concrete stairs (422 comments)

Survived no problem. I later noticed that only 1 of the 5 chassis screws was still in place and never bothered to fix it. Ran for months afterward and I eventually bought an HTC Magic.

Computer-Based System To Crack Down On Casino Card Counters

garethw Re:And things like this are why... (597 comments)

Agreed - I've never understood why "counting cards" is this awful, evil thing that people do and it's despicable and immoral and bad and we'll kick you out. If someone's able to use their ability to their advantage, why the hell wouldn't they?

A History of Early Text Adventure Games

garethw Photopia (130 comments)

I'd heartily recommend Adam Cadre's "Photopia". It's one of the most affecting pieces of fiction of any time I've ever read. http://adamcadre.ac/if.html
