Ask Slashdot: What Old Technology Can't You Give Up?

geekd Re:Simple (635 comments)

Emacs user here. The only one in an office full of vi users. They and I have our config files set up so that indentation, etc all match, so when we open each other's code it's not all goofy looking.

I *can* use vi, I just prefer emacs, and I always have.

Getting IT Talent In Government Will Take Culture Change, Says Google Engineer

Exactly. If a workplace has "must wear tie" rule, then I assume they have a whole bunch of other stupid rules.

Sony Warns Demand For Blu-Ray Diminishing Faster Than Expected

geekd Re:..and streamed video doesn't come with awful DR (477 comments)

That's because streaming from Netflix or Amazon just works, on your TV, on your phone, on your computer.

BluRay often doesn't work, and when it doesn't work, it usually because of the DRM.

When DRM is invisible, people don't even realize it's there.

Getting Misogyny, Racism and Homophobia Out of Gaming

geekd Don't buy it then (704 comments)

If the content of a videogame offends you, then don't buy it. If enough people don't buy offensive video games, people won't make offensive video games.

Telling other people "you should do this" or "you should not do that" only pisses them off and wastes your time.

Nissan Unveils 88 Pound 400-HP Race Car Engine

geekd Re:Sure, but what about (239 comments)

If it's going to run LeMans, then it'll have to last 24 hours. :)

Kidding aside, it's not unusual for a race car engine to get rebuilt / replaced after every race. Heck, F1 used to use different engines for qualifying and the race. The qualifying engines were so lightweight and high strung they only lasted 12 to 15 laps. (F1 races are around 60 laps, depending on the track)

Next-Gen Windshield Wipers To Be Based On Jet Fighter "Forcefield" Tech

geekd Re:What happens when it can't keep up? (237 comments)

Because you would drive your Land Rover in those conditions. People who can spend $1.3 mill for a car have a specific car for all kinds of weather.

Next-Gen Windshield Wipers To Be Based On Jet Fighter "Forcefield" Tech

geekd Re:What happens when it can't keep up? (237 comments)

McLaren makes super high end sports cars. You would not drive your McLaren in those conditions.

For example, the McLaren P1 *starts* at $1.3 million.

Canada Post Announces the End of Urban Home Delivery

geekd Wait. What? (226 comments)

"About 1/3 of Canadian homes currently get mail delivered to their door" WHAT?

I'm an American, and I have always lived in a city or the suburbs. I guess I take to-my-door mail delivery as a basic human right. I thought all first world countries had this.

Wow. my mind is blown.

62% of 16 To 24-Year-Olds Prefer Printed Books Over eBooks

geekd Re:Printed books (331 comments)

I can't fit 500+ printed books in my pocket. For me, that's the big deal right there. I have limited physical storage space in my house, and I read about 2 books a week.

A War Over Solar Power Is Raging Within the GOP

geekd Re:Fucking rednecks (1030 comments)

But the GOP is against funding solar power because they don't believe in global warming.

Well, that what they say, but it's really because the oil and coal companies have them in their pocket.

From 'Quantified Self' To 'Quantified Car'

geekd Re:Why would I want a "Nanny" app? (173 comments)

I'm not "trying to impress anyone out there", I'm just trying not to die of boredom on my daily commute. A full-throttle acceleration from a stop light (when the way is clear and it's safe to do so) every now and then can really put a smile on my face.

I hear people say things about people with sports cars - "he's got small penis" or "he's showing off", but I'm just having fun. I'm having fun *for myself*. I've got no one to show off for - I'm married 17 years now.

This app is not for me.

From 'Quantified Self' To 'Quantified Car'

geekd Why would I want a "Nanny" app? (173 comments)

"The app chirps at you when it notices rough braking, aggressive acceleration, or speeding over 70 mph."

I do that all the time. I like to do that. That's why I bought a sports car. Why would I want an app to chirp at me when I do that?

Veoh Once Again Beats UMG (After Going Out of Business)

geekd Re:UMG has screwed me out of 2 jobs. (229 comments)

That may be true. I'm a developer, so I can't comment intelligently about the financial side of things. It may be that Veoh would have went under anyway, but we would have lasted a lot longer without those attorney's fees, and without the chilling effect the lawsuit had on us. I was told that some companies did not want to advertise with us because of the lawsuit.

Veoh Once Again Beats UMG (After Going Out of Business)

geekd Re:UMG has screwed me out of 2 jobs. (229 comments)

In the all hands meeting when Michael Robertson told us all about his idea for my.mp3.com, one guy, a developer, (we'll call him "D") raised his hand and said "So, how are not a warez site, then?", and Michael had some explanation, and D asked the question again, and was insistent about it, and eventually was told to shut up and sit down (in nicer language). He was right, though, as history has proven.

Veoh Once Again Beats UMG (After Going Out of Business)

geekd UMG has screwed me out of 2 jobs. (229 comments)

I worked for mp3.com from 1999 to them folding in 2003 from UMG's (and others) lawsuit. I worked for Veoh from 2008 to 2009 when they folded from UMG's lawsuit.

I HATE UMG.

Those were the most fun jobs I've ever had. The work was challenging, the environment was fun, and my co-worker were some of the smartest people I've ever met. I had the opportunity to write code that solved problems no one had every faced before. It was awesome.

UMG has screwed me out of 2 very fulfilling jobs.

The Experiments and Creative Commons Licensing

geekd geekd writes  |  more than 4 years ago

geekd (14774) writes "SanDiegoPunk.com has discovered the Creative Commons.

There are all kinds of licensing protections available to musicians. The main purpose of organizations like ASCAP is to make sure that artists are compensated for their work. In the past this has meant that the unknown artist just puts their music out there without any protections at all.

But now there is Creative Commons Licensing. It is a way for musicians to determine what level of ownership they want to maintain while giving away songs. You can read about it here: http://creativecommons.org/

The idea is that you choose what level of protection you want, create the legal document licensing your songs, and then you are protected. You can say if people can sample your songs; re-record them; and if they can sell derivatives of your songs. A breakdown of the licensing options available can be found here: http://creativecommons.org/about/licenses"

Punk Band Angy At RIAA, Releases Album For Free

geekd geekd writes  |  more than 4 years ago

geekd (14774) writes "Disgusted with the RIAA's lawsuits against music lovers, San Diego based rock / punk band The Experiments has released their new album, "What Kind Of Animal?" for free under the Creative Commons license. Anyone is free to download, distribute, re-mix or otherwise use the songs for non-commercial purposes.
"It's ridiculous that a single mom gets fined $1.9 million for downloading 24 songs. It' criminal, and the RIAA are a criminal organization," said the band's bass player, Dave Blood. "So, we say, take our songs for free. You deserve them.""

Avatar Blue-Ray DRM issues

geekd geekd writes  |  more than 4 years ago

geekd (14774) writes "Once again, DRM only hurts legit content purchasers. "An unusual glitch has angered some "Avatar" Blu-ray owners. For these unlucky people, since the disc won't play on their Blu-ray players, their new "Avatar" DVD serves no real purpose other than to sit idly on the coffee table ... It appears the main culprit concerning playback issues with "Avatar" is, ironically, the disc's DRM (digital rights management). DRM, which is the very technology meant to prevent bootleggers from illegally copying the film, is the very technology preventing people who actually paid for the disc from watching the film. Even with updated firmware, a lot of Blu-ray players weren't prepared for these security measures. Despite the security problems, bootleggers are having a field day. Pirated copies of "Avatar," according to Los Angeles Times, were available as early as January. ""
