How Safe Is Cycling?

goffster its generally pretty simple (947 comments)

bikers just need to cut risks:

1) Don't ride in the dark.
2) Don't ride in the middle of the street.
3) Don't go down hills at full speed.
4) Wear a helmet
5) Be careful at intersections

They don't have to be laws. Just what you do to live.

Why Does Windows Have Terrible Battery Life?

goffster mindset (558 comments)

Apple wrote ios for devices with batteries in mind from day one.
It is slowing getting close to OSX, but they have to be careful.

Microsoft chose the "one O/S everywhere" serving needs of desktop
and devices at the same time. This was a naive approach.

Microsoft Takes Another Stab At Tablets, Unveils Surface 2, Surface 2 Pro

goffster they have an ipad trade in (381 comments)

Give them your old ipad, get $200 credit toward in-store purchase.
I am not sure, however, what people would want more:
my old ipad 1 or $200 at microsoft store.
At least, it *would* make a better Christmas stocking stuffer than
some socks and a toothbrush.

or perhaps even

"and expressed regret over his inability to capitalize on burgeoning interest in anything"

Ask Slashdot: Are 'Rock Star' Developers a Necessity?

goffster You never know... (356 comments)

You never know you ever needed a Rock Star developer
until you find out what they can do for you.

Frequently it boils down to cost. They find a way to do
something with half the resources, or they find a way to double
your throughput with the same resources.

Either way, the bigger the company, the more it means.

Between two individuals:
It seems to me that encryption based on a shared private password
and then encrypted again with public/private key encryption gains you the best
of both worlds.

Indian Government To Ban Use of US Email Services For Official Communications

goffster As if that makes a difference. (219 comments)

The NSA has a lot fewer legal problems intercepting foreign mail than
it does domestic.

Only now, it simply means they wont have good spam filters,
and money will now be flowing out of india to nigeria $26,000,000 at a time.
