Tesla's Having Issues Charging In the Cold

greatgreygreengreasy Re:units please (476 comments)

There's a difference between needing a set of jumper cables to get going again, and the Tesla's inability to move itself with a cold (dead) battery though. I keep jumper cables in my car because my battery is weak to begin with.

US Justice Blocks Implementation of ACA Contraceptive Mandate

greatgreygreengreasy Not really (903 comments)

No, if car insurance worked like health insurance, it would cover mechanical problems, like engine blow ups, tire failures, transmission slippage, suspension wear. In that case it makes sense for the insurer to pay for oil changes, new tires, etc as it is less expensive than paying for a new engine, accident caused by blow-out, and the like. Car insurance as we know it is more similar to Accidental Death and Dismemberment coverage. If you die or lose limbs, like in an accident, they pay. Much cheaper, not even close to health insurance.

A Subscription-Based Movie Theater

greatgreygreengreasy Re:Real Butter (308 comments)

Our local theater just upgraded to digital, new sound system too. They pump up the volume so loud now that I can't bear to watch anything there anymore. But, they DO have real butter and salt, so we just grab the popcorn and take it home. Cheaper that way too. :)

US Particle Colliders In Need of Funding

greatgreygreengreasy Obviously (133 comments)

... the answer is privatization. The private sector can always do a better job than government, and is much more efficient! Republicans NEED to win this fall so that they can cut funding completely, cut harmful regulations on nuclear research, and get this country back to science's true mission, making money! ~

Is this DiY guide still available? I've looked for cm102 parts, it looks like Newegg only has cm106 based devices, are these the same? Thanks for your help.

Rural Broadband to Replace POTS As Beneficiary of US Gov't Subsidies

greatgreygreengreasy FTTH in progress here (208 comments)

All the local phone companies where I live (Northern ND) have some sort of FTTH plan. I work for a contractor doing the work in people's homes after the fiber is buried, and the larger 'cities' (50 to 3000 people) all have fiber, now we're working on the tiny towns, then the farms, etc. Whatever stimulus money they're getting to do all this sure is working. I hope it works for you all in the future too (especially the gentleman in TN.)

Why Anonymous Can't Take Down Amazon.com

greatgreygreengreasy I know how: (392 comments)

The only way to take down Amazon would be to announce super-special, super-limited deals, like an XBox or TV for 90% off, at a certain time of day. Or host a woot-off and bring up a bag of crap.

Goodbye, VGA

greatgreygreengreasy DVI Cables (356 comments)

Where I work, we have boxes and boxes of left over DVI cables. All our monitors came with them, yet we use maybe 1 out of 100. I'm sure there are plenty of other places like us, willing to unload them cheap, if you look around. And these are not used, still sealed in the OEM packaging.

Driver Privacy Act Introduced in US Senate

greatgreygreengreasy greatgreygreengreasy writes  |  about 7 months ago

greatgreygreengreasy (706454) writes "In 2005, then North Dakota Republican Governor John Hoeven signed into law a bill "ensuring drivers' ownership of their EDR (Electronic Data Recorder) data." Now as US Senator, he has teamed up with Amy Klobuchar, D-MN, to introduce similar legislation at the Federal level. "Under this legislation, EDR data could only be retrieved [for specific reasons]." The EFF has expressed concern in the past over the so-called black boxes, and their privacy implications. This legislation, however, would not address the recent revelations by a Ford executive on their access to data, since in those cases "The vehicle owner or lessee consents to the data retrieval." The bill has gained the support of about 20 Senators so far."

N.Y. Passes DNA Requirement For Almost All Convicted Criminals

greatgreygreengreasy greatgreygreengreasy writes  |  more than 2 years ago

greatgreygreengreasy (706454) writes "'Lawmakers in New York (State, USA) approved a bill that will make the state the first to require DNA samples from almost all convicted criminals.... it would expand the state's database to include DNA from people convicted of almost any crime, even misdemeanors as minor as jumping over a subway turnstile.' Gattaca seems closer than we may have thought."

"PS3 sucks, XBox360 is good, Wii is best"

greatgreygreengreasy greatgreygreengreasy writes  |  more than 7 years ago

greatgreygreengreasy (706454) writes "Wolfgang Gruener at Tom's Hardware believes Sony and Microsoft are stagnating, while Nintendo is looking to the future. Noting that most PS3 titles are fighting/shooting, he makes an interesting point about violence in video games, "As a dad of two small children I can tell you that the last games I want my children to play are Killzone 2, Unreal 3, Call of Duty 4, or Metal Gear Solid 4, no matter how great the graphics are. I am still confused about the fact that this country has absolutely no issue with showing violence in its most extreme and sick forms while showing a pair of boobs will get a publisher a million dollar lawsuit.""
