Facebook API Bug Deletes Contact Info On Phones

grolschie Re:The real issue is with permissions (178 comments)

I was quite surprise when using the FB app on my Nokia Belle (Symbian^3) phone, to discover that my phone's contacts' photos had been populated from FB. I don't recall giving permission for this app to access my phone's address book. I certainly hope that the data goes only one-way (i.e from FB to phonebook, and not phonebook to FB). :-/

Websites Can Detect What Chrome Extensions You've Installed

grolschie Re:Well, there it is: (131 comments)

... I'm sure given time and the history of IE it probably doesn't need an extension to tell if you're pregnant...

It wouldn't be so hard to detect web searches for recipes where dirt is the primary ingredient. ;-)

Apple Claims Samsung and Motorola Patent Monopoly

grolschie Anticompetitive? (381 comments)

"Apple lawyers are crying foul about Samsung, and ... Motorola's allegedly 'anticompetitive,' use of patents. ...

Ummm... I would think that patents by definition are anticompetitive. Aren't they?

Cop Seeks Wiretapping Charges For Woman Who Videotaped Beating

grolschie Pot Kettle Black (662 comments)

"One of four police officers disciplined for the incident on Nov. 27, 2009, Michael Sedergren, has filed an application for a criminal complaint against videographer Tyrisha Greene. Sedergren, who was suspended for 45 days, claims it was illegal for Greene to videotape him without his consent."

I've seen the "Cops" TV program. Do the police get the suspects consent to film them?

Rootkit Infection Requires Windows Reinstall

grolschie Re:Recovery CD? (510 comments)

I suspect that many Joe Sixpack's don't know about backups, or if they have, haven't set some backup system/process/plan up. I guess it's good that Windows 7 Action Center warns about backups.

Why Has Blu-ray Failed To Catch Hold?

grolschie Re:I have many BluRay Discs since... (1162 comments)

The info I gave wasn't correct. I'm sorry about that. It seems that even with "BD Internet Connection" set to "Do not allow", my Avatar disc still accesses the internet and loads the extra content. I am not sure whether this is due to a recent firmware update, or some other reason. Removing the memory stick for results in a message saying "This feature requires Local Storage..." when loading it, so I would guess it's still trying to do something internet related possibly?

Why Has Blu-ray Failed To Catch Hold?

grolschie Re:I have many BluRay Discs since... (1162 comments)

I know that the 2010 Sony's can turn BD Live feature off. Is there such a setting for your player? Or one can remove the USB memory stick used for BD Live - should the player not have onboard storage. Internet access is not mandatory for blu-ray players - one can disconnect.

Why Has Blu-ray Failed To Catch Hold?

grolschie Re:DVDs are better. (1162 comments)

DVDs don't crash because some jag-off decided to run Java code between frames of my movie. ...

Citation please?

I have a huge collection of DVD's. I'm not going to repurchase everything. ...

Most Blu-Ray players will play DVDs also. So most Blu-Ray player owners do not need to replace any DVDs - let alone entire collections - unless they choose to. With most Blu-Ray players, one now has more choice of formats for future purchases.

Police busted after tracking device found on car

grolschie grolschie writes  |  about 7 years ago

uh oh (610666) writes "A New Zealand police operation to covertly follow a Central Otago man came to an abrupt halt this week when the man found tracking devices planted in his car, ripped them out and listed them for auction on Trade Me. Ralph Williams, of Cromwell, said he found the devices last week in his daughter's car, which he uses, and in his flatmate's car after the cars were seized by police and taken away for investigation."
