The Dismantling of POTS: Bold Move Or Grave Error?

What do you think deaf people do?
911 in many areas supports SMS for this reason and a multitude of others.

The Dismantling of POTS: Bold Move Or Grave Error?

h4rr4r Re:Cell phones are better in a disaster (582 comments)

Depends on the cause of the blackout.
Here, our last days long blackout took out anything that needed wires. This is because it was an ice storm that took down wiring as well as trees which took out more wiring. POTS was not fully restored until after power was. This is because the power company had to replace poles before the Telco could string new wires.

Not for years.
That kind of reliability died out in the 90s.

Well, you can always make the box bigger.
Just make the heat sink a few hundred pounds of copper.

Why You Shouldn't Buy a UHD 4K TV This Year

h4rr4r Re:Early Adopters (271 comments)

I will be getting one of those this year if only so I can rewatch the Dr Who 50th in 3D. I intended to buy a bigger TV anyway and adding in 3D is pretty cheap.

Why You Shouldn't Buy a UHD 4K TV This Year

h4rr4r Re:Seiki 39" 4K can be had for less than 500 bucks (271 comments)

To be a reasonable person here, if you are using that TV as a monitor you would sit the same distance.

Even if you are using it as a TV, my couch is not bolted to my living room floor, I doubt yours is either.

Jolla's First Phone Goes On Sale

h4rr4r Re:Why such low specs (307 comments)

I would rather have a slightly larger phone. I am not going to carry a tablet around in public at all times.

I agree the price is too high for what it is.

Jolla's First Phone Goes On Sale

h4rr4r Re:Why such low specs (307 comments)

My phone is open to tinkering.
Heck, Ubuntu for it exists.

I want both. I might be convinced if all the drivers are in mainline, but we both know that is not the case.

h4rr4r Re:Why such low specs (307 comments)

It would not come close to a 2006 macbook pro.
ARM cpus are not that performant. Ghz is not something you can compare that way.

62% of 16 To 24-Year-Olds Prefer Printed Books Over eBooks

Any citation for that?

I want to see a proper double blind study done of this.

I look at an LCD all day, then sometimes some more at home. I do not suffer from any eyestrain I can detect.

Nasdaq 4000 — This Time It's Different?

h4rr4r Re:Good news for all us have-nots!!! (241 comments)

Fine, but no need to go making exaggerated claims like the value of the car approaching the value of a house.

The Median and the mean are also quite different. In addition I would bet the Median new home buyers income is well above that of the median household. People do rent you know.

The Humble Indie Bundle

h4rr4r h4rr4r writes  |  more than 4 years ago

h4rr4r (612664) writes "The Humble Indie Bundle is a unique kind of bundle that we are trying out.

Pay what you want. If you bought these five games separately, it would cost around $80 but we're letting you set the price!

All of the games work great on Mac, Windows, and Linux. We didn't want to leave anyone out.

There is no middle-man. You can rest assured that 100% of your purchase goes directly to the developers and non-profits as you specify (minus credit card fees).

We don't use DRM. When you buy these games, they are yours. Feel free to play them without an internet connection, back them up, and install them on all of your Macs and PCs freely.

Your contribution supports the amazing Child's Play charity and Electronic Frontier Foundation. By default, the amount is split equally between the seven participants (including Child's Play and EFF), but you can tweak the split any way you'd like."
