Home wireless security level?

happylight Re:Why care? (438 comments)

'Cause not everyone is living in the middle of nowhere like you? From where I'm sitting there're about 50 wireless APs in range. I can only imagine how many wireless clients. If you leave your router open people WILL connect to it.

Or they'd just flat out come out and say, "We don't want your business. Please find another ISP."

Nintendo Hijacks Ad Revenue From Fan-Created YouTube Playthroughs

happylight Re:Let them choose to go commercial free (297 comments)

Your fans are not watching LPs. If they are the game's fans then they are playing the game themselves. People watch LPs for that specific person that they love. They are the LPer's fans, not yours. Your game is just a tool for the comedic effects.

If I made a home video of my family playing Scrabble and it becomes popular on YouTube, do you think Hasbro should be paid? No. People watch because my family is funny not because they want to watch someone play Scrabble.

Integer Overflow Bug Leads To Diablo III Gold Duping

happylight Re:Bad PR? (160 comments)

Rolling back millions of players most of whom haven't even heard of the dupe? Or ban the handful of people who were involved in the dupe and revert any transaction they had with other people? Seems like an easy choice.

SendGrid Fires Employee After Firestorm Over Inappropriate Jokes

happylight Re:Really? (1145 comments)

Only one of the two were fired. The person who was offended was also fired.

But really if she had just said something to them quietly no one would have been fired. But she had to take it to crowds of people who weren't even there.

Supreme Court Upholds First Sale Doctrine

happylight Re:Seriously? 6-3??? (648 comments)

If the shoes you bought were subsidized with taxpayer money would you still feel right about it? What if you go get free food from the homeless shelter and then turn around and sell it for profit?

A lot of countries subsidize textbooks so they cost next to nothing for the general public. This guy is profiting off of public good will.

What's the Best RSS Reader Not Named Google Reader?

happylight Re:Outlook (287 comments)

It does have its own RSS folder by default...

On top of that you can set up incoming rules to auto sort them (mail too not just RSS) into folders, tag them, mark as read, or just about anything.

In Wake of Poor Reviews, Amazon Yanks SimCity Download

happylight Re:Clarifying the "server-side calculation" confus (511 comments)

I don't know about "simulating properly" when you lose connection to the server. Plenty of people have noticed traffic acting wonky, every single bus lining up to pick up a single passenger, every fire truck going to a single fire when there're other fires in the city, etc. These problems didn't exist during beta.

It's very probable that when the game loses internet connection or when the server is overloaded, the game simply fall back on a "dumb" AI. While this might work for the few minutes the connection is down, in the long term your city will suffer from so much traffic problems it just dies.

In Wake of Poor Reviews, Amazon Yanks SimCity Download

happylight Re:I wish I had pirated it lol (511 comments)

All current "cracks" are either fake, malware, or an infinite loop of survey sites designed to extract money from you. Writing a server emulator takes time and a lot of effort.

SimCity 5: How Not To Design a Single Player Game

happylight Re:Why the online restriction? DUH! (569 comments)

If you want an example... Diablo 3 is exactly the same way. There has yet to be a working emulator that has working quests and mobs for Diablo 3 released to the public.

There are a couple private servers out there but... if you'd still need an internet connection to connect to the private server then you might as well play on the official blizzard server.

SimCity 5: How Not To Design a Single Player Game

happylight Re:Why the online restriction? DUH! (569 comments)

Parts of the game engine is on the server. Without the server part nothing would work. That is until someone writes a server emulator.

Cryptography 'Becoming Less Important,' Adi Shamir Says

happylight Re:no (250 comments)

What you're referring to is more often called information security. Cryptography usually just refers to the methods, algorithms, and protocols of transferring data.

But there's little point in arguing the semantics of words. I think we can all agree the human factor plays a large part in almost all intrusions these days.

Cryptography 'Becoming Less Important,' Adi Shamir Says

happylight Re:no (250 comments)

I think the point is no encryption is going to protect you from users installing malware, buggy software, or just plain hand over data unknowingly. Next to no attackers would attack the cryptography itself. The weakest link is always somewhere else.

Ask Slashdot: Identity Theft Attempt In Progress; How To Respond?

happylight Re:Malicious or clueless? (239 comments)

HAHAHA. My brother did exactly this. There was an email address that he wanted. Despite the fact that he couldn't sign up for the address at gmail or yahoo because it was already taken, he used that email to sign up for various services anyway. He could not understand the fact that he doesn't have control of the email address stops him from using it.

He has autism btw. I tried to explain this to him a million times and he still can't understand it.

iOS 6.1.3 Beta 2 Patches evasi0n Jailbreak

happylight Re:Vulnerabilities (272 comments)

Maybe because bugs that allow jail break are pretty damn serious as they allow for complete control of the phone. Other bugs that don't allow jail break aren't as critical.
