Comet Lovejoy Plunges Into the Sun and Survives

harris s newman Misleading subject (209 comments)

Into Near If the comet had truly plunged into the Sun, it would not be in orbit around it. It's trajectory never was into anything.

Should Being Competitive With Windows Matter For Linux?

harris s newman There is no competation (645 comments)

Wikipedia: "Competition is a contest between individuals, groups, nations, animals, etc. for territory, a niche, or a location of resources." Since you can get Linux with 0 cost, there are no resources transacted.

Google Sues US Gov't For Only Considering Microsoft

harris s newman Ok, I'm gonna bash m$ (407 comments)

I just upgraded to Office 7 at work, and I absolutely HATE IT. I have been using office for years, and it's ok up to the ribbon interface. Yes, Google has some issues, but it's at least intuitive. I can't wait till my 79 year old dad tries to use office 7, and I have to migrate him to Open office. Microsoft, you totally blew it.

Another exchange bites the dust

harris s newman harris s newman writes  |  about 6 months ago

harris s newman (714436) writes "Yet another cryptocurrency has come forward and admitted that security and system problems have led to customer funds being pinched by hackers.

Poloniex, a Bitcoin trading post similar to Mt. Gox, has lost 12.3 percent of the Bitcoin stored in hot wallets on the website.

The owner of Poloniex, Tristan D'Agosta — a.k.a. Busoni — admitted to the loss and asked users how they would like to be compensated.

In a forum post, Busoni said that a hacker took advantage of a processing flaw in the Bitcoin exchange post. When users submit a withdrawal request, the input is checked against your balance, deducted, and the new amount recorded within a database. However, it was discovered that placing several withdrawals all in practically the same instant meant each request was processed at more-or-less the same time, resulting in a negative balance but "valid insertions into the database, which then get picked up by the withdrawal daemon."

With all the volitility in the market, are we on the verge of a bitcoin market collapse?"

More delays at Microsoft

harris s newman harris s newman writes  |  more than 5 years ago

harris s newman (714436) writes "Microsoft has again announced a delay...this time a good one. It seems that XP just won't die, the company reportedly extended the OEM downgrade time line once again: As of now, system builders can still offer Windows XP downgrades to their customers and will be able to do so until Vista's second birthday. Will XP be around in time to see the next generation of OS?"

Disaster Recovery Institute Website Broken

harris s newman harris s newman writes  |  about 6 years ago

harris s newman (714436) writes "The Disaster Recovery Institute ( DRII), the premier institute for certifying individuals for Continuity Planning, is "broken", and won't be up for weeks for their members to log on and enter certification points. Although there is a website presence, members won't be able to log on and enter their certification points online (see the "maintain my certification/Submit CEA Points") for the error! If the premier Continuity Planning Institute can't keep their website up, whats the value of my certification?"

Smash Bros Brawl breaking WII's!

harris s newman harris s newman writes  |  more than 6 years ago

harris s newman (714436) writes "After my son's wii got multiple errors running the Smash Bros Brawl he just paid $50 for, I took the game back and got a replacement. The new one still gave multiple errors. Now the wii is no longer working with other games as well. A quick search online shows that there is indeed a known defect in Smash Bros Brawl, and that Nintendo is quietly recalling machines which have this problem. They say it's dust on the DVD lens, so this is not a repair, it's a cleaning. I worry that we will get the wii back (after 2 weeks) and this problem will happen again!"

harris s newman harris s newman writes  |  more than 7 years ago

harris s newman (714436) writes "Information Week has a great article with the results from Microsofts claims about 235 patent violation claims. The article says that it will end in either: 1) Handshakes all around 2) Competition snuffed out or 3) It blows up in Microsoft's face. The article doesn't give odds on which will happen, but Linus Torvalds states that Microsoft is more likely the patent violator, given that OS theory has been around since the 1960's. Which scenerio is a more likely outcome?"

harris s newman harris s newman writes  |  more than 7 years ago

harris s newman (714436) writes "France has signed a deal with more than 30 countries to build "the world's most advanced nuclear fusion reactor, aimed at developing a clean, cheap and abundant energy source". Does this, along with the recent Google Video featured on Slashdot shows a change in the world's view towards cheep, renewable energy?"
