Desktop Linux Is Dead

heffrey Phenomenal security and stability? (1348 comments)

This made me laugh. Linux is much the same as OSX and Windows in this regard. If any of the 3 is weak then it would be Apple's piss-poor security process. That said Linux is a total hodge-podge when it comes to security, witness the Debian OpenSSS bug to see how badly it can go wrong.

Bottom line, Linux needs to find a differentiating factor in which it is actually discernibly different.

UAC does require password if you are a standard user which should be the norm on a corporate site.

Microsoft's Security Development Process Under CC License

heffrey Microsoft track record (164 comments)

It seems that a majority of posters here are out of touch with Microsoft's track record regarding security. It was terrible 10 years cut starting from XP SP2 they have done well.

Those of you looking for a mainstream commercial software vendor that pays little regard to security should take a look at Adobe or Apple.

Iran Opens Its First Nuclear Power Plant

heffrey Re:Iran Opens Its First Nuclear Power Plant (496 comments)

A more pertinent question would be to ask what the US did to Iran. And the answer was that the USA killed off Iran's fledgling democracy in 1953 and thus secured a never ending period of hate and distrust.

The answer to slow cellular data rates is Opera mini. Browsing raw interweb on cellular is just horrid.

A Flood of Stable Linux Kernels Released

heffrey Re:If this were Windows (105 comments)

Yeah it really sucks that programs that run on one version of Windows keep on running on versions released far into the future. I really hate it when I can run my old programs. It just drives me mad. I wish the MS would make all my old programs break when they release new versions of Windows. Heck, I might just buy a Mac!!

A Composer's-Eye View of the Copyright Wars

heffrey GPL (973 comments)

Could somebody explain how to rationalise that copyright infringement is OK for music and films but heinous when it's a GPL infringement. I'd just like to know how to reasonably maintain both seemingly contradictory positions. Thanks.

Your blurry fonts are likely an issue with Cleartype. Are you using a CRT monitor?!

Also, what kind of loser still runs XP in 2010?!

heffrey CFD (175 comments)

Lots of the teams use CFD to help design their cars but basically CFD doesn't work anywhere near as well as old fashioned wind tunnel testing and so all the top teams spend all year (24/7!) doing tunnel testing!

Germany Warns Against Using Firefox

heffrey Re:Google Chrome. (509 comments)

It's a complete non-starter on a computer with multiple user accounts. How do you update it? Do you really want to update every single version separately? Really? What about corporate environments?

Firefox installer isn't great for corporate Windows environments either because it isn't delivered as an MSI package. Why on earth the FF people can't follow a nearly 10 year old platform packaging standard is beyond me. Yes you can get FF MSI packages from 3rd parties but that has its own problems and barriers.

Germany Warns Against Using Firefox

heffrey Re:Google Chrome. (509 comments)

I think you'll find that Chrome's record with regards security is no better than IE8 or FF.

Also, as far as rocking, I still can't get over the way it rides roughshod over installation standards and copies program files to your user profile. Until they get that sorted I won't touch it.
