Building the Infinite Digital Universe of No Man's Sky

heson Re:question (100 comments)

You only need to save the seed for the pseudo random number generator and the world will look exactly the same every time you re-generate it.

Functional 3D-Printed Tape Measure

heson Re:meh (134 comments)

I like the tape measure choice.
It shows how advanced constructions you can do, and the limitations of such advanced constructions. As I understand it, it is fully functional right out of the printer. This is a little bit more advanced than "possible" but thats why it is cool.

Owncloud 6 Brings Collaborative Open Document Format Editing to the Web

heson Re:More than that... (73 comments)

What is the lag on edits? Sharepoint is not usable for conference call editing as it takes too long for the edits to propagate to all participants. Googledocs is great, often quicker than screen sharing. What other alternatives are there and are they quick?

Debian To Replace SysVinit, Switch To Systemd Or Upstart

heson Re:Canonical might suck... (362 comments)

Upstars solves some problems with sysv, but includes a whole array of new ones. Systemd solves almost all problems with few new ones, except for all the parts that is not implemented yet. Systemd is a mess for novices to use and understand, the helper tools are not as good as they should be.

German Ministry of Education Throws Away PCs For 190,000 € Due To Infection

heson Re:Money well spent (347 comments)

... followed by the tedious process of downloading and waiting for update after update to install, then installing virus and security software, "productivity suites" and any other software that they need, each likely to have its own updates...

Who the hell would do that if they got more than a few machines, update the frekkin image, then clone. Follow up with some polish.

Coelacanth Genome Sequenced

heson Re:An obvious extrapolation... (82 comments)

That said, it's not like the ocean is dominated by coelecanth, so it doesn't mean they've reached optimality or anything. Just that they're good enough to continue reproducing and surviving.

I would say that their genes are stuck in a local maxima where they can't evolve. Any mutation dies off or are so different that they leave the area and become a new species.

Ask Slashdot: Dealing With Unwanted But Official Security Probes?

heson Re:Is this not your local net police? (238 comments)

I would fear what unforseen bugs the pen testing causes (database gioing down, queries cut short etc) bugs that are good to find but absolutely not in a production environment. Dangeorus in a hospital enviroment.
I would send their packets to a honeypot machine (possible with less security for the giggles) to get more information about the "attac".
In reality they are probably just running foundstone or some other security suite.

Comparing the C++ Standard and Boost

heson Re:C-like C++ is the way to go (333 comments)

Read Stroustrup, code C++ the right way. (i.e C extended by the possibilities of c++, opposed to schoolbook object oriented language with a tendency to over complicate)

OnLive's Epic Plan For a New Type of Video Game

heson Re:Not constrained (137 comments)

Correct, and they aim for the wrong type of latency demanding games. To survive they must go for games that can handle bad latency. OnLive has a huge potential but only if they stop selling an impossible product and start going for achievable goals.

Guess: They have sold a lie to investors and are stuck in it.
