2 US Senators Propose 12-Cent Gas Tax Increase

iceperson Re:Yes, let's tax the poor (619 comments)

Republicans should love it because it hurts the working poor and illegals disproportionately.

Where I'm from, flyover country, poor people are much more likely to drive 15-20 year old clunkers (dodge durango's, jeep cherokee's, and other big heavy vehicles seem to be super popular with the poor here), they also tend to have longer commutes due to fewer job opportunities and less mobility when it comes to housing.

We're not even talking about the indirect costs. When the price of fuel goes up everything is affected. People like me will easily absorb those costs while the people living paycheck to paycheck will suffer. I drive a 7 year old Honda Civic, and I'm lucky enough that I telework. The mechanic who changes my oil, the AC repair guy who spends a large part of his income on fuel for service calls, and the people who work in the restaurants where I eat and the stores where I shop will probably be forced to give something up.

2 US Senators Propose 12-Cent Gas Tax Increase

iceperson Re:Yes, let's tax the poor (619 comments)

Sure, it will affect me like a bucket of water affects my swimming pool I guess. I'm not wealthy, not even close, but even if the cost of everything I buy was increased by the same 3% increase to the price of a gallon of gas my lifestyle wouldn't change in the slightest...

2 US Senators Propose 12-Cent Gas Tax Increase

iceperson Yes, let's tax the poor (619 comments)

12 cents won't affect me one bit. It certainly won't change my driving habits. The poor on the other hand.. well, let's just say if you're living on a fixed income and/or are already below the poverty line a nice big regressive tax might sting a little...

Oil Man Proposes Increase In Oklahoma Oil-and-Gas Tax

iceperson Not really (182 comments)

Kaiser users his charities as a tax write off and then funnels money back into his for profit businesses from them. This guy spent much of the 80's-90's "buying" dead and dying companies so that he could use their losses to offset his gains and pay zero taxes on his profits. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/...

Texas Family Awarded $2.9 Million In Fracking Lawsuit

iceperson Re:mystery ailments (146 comments)

There are 60 or so chemical elements found in every person on the planet, almost all of which can be "toxic". The 5 'symptoms' listed are all pretty common. I would bet you'd be hard pressed to find a household that hasn't had someone with 1 or all of them at some point in any given 12 month period...

Ask Slashdot: How To Reimagine a Library?

iceperson Not quite (231 comments)

While your educated upper middle class white guy probably doesn't see much use for a large library there are a lot of people that do.

I recommend you go to a small town library and see how it's being used. My wife is a librarian at our local library, and I'm always surprised how many people are there when I go in to see her. There are kids using meeting rooms for school projects, people using the computers to fill out applications for jobs, and there's always at least a few people interspersed between the racks just browsing or even sitting on the floor reading something they've found. The local knitters club meets there once a week and last I checked there were about a dozen volunteers for the literacy program teaching people to read at various times of day depending on when their "student" is available.

Fortunately, our community values our library so she gets a lot of local support, but I'm sure there are people in our community like yourself who see something that they don't/won't use as a giant waste or prime real estate or something...

Tesla Sending New Wall-Charger Adapters After Garage Fire

iceperson Re:Bravo, Tesla (195 comments)

Perhaps the cost of owning a Tesla should include lost wages from quitting your job to go to school to get an EE degree, tearing down your existing home, and rebuilding a new one and doing all the wiring yourself so you can sleep at night not worrying about the charger for your new car starting a fire and burning you and your family alive.

Poll Shows That 75% Prefer Printed Books To eBooks

iceperson Re:Slow death despite nostalgia? (312 comments)

I'd be more interested if it were broken down by how many books the respondent read in the last year. I've found a correlation with non-readers and hate for ebooks. Why should anyone care about the opinion of someone who can't name 2 books they've actually read in the last 12 months?

Indiana Nurses Fired After Refusing Flu Shots On Religious Grounds

iceperson Re:Good (851 comments)

The question I want to know is would it be better in my later years for my to have never been vaccinated for the flu? Does getting the flu every few years when I'm young and healthy give me a better immune system to handle it when I'm older. I completely understand vaccinating people who are at risk of serious illness against the flu, but less convinced that we should be forcing this upon the healthy when it doesn't give the same long term benefit as traditional vaccines. From what I understand the current flu outbreak isn't even a strain that is included in the current vaccine.
