How Steve Jobs Solved the Innovator's Dilemma

iknowcss Re:Ridiculous fanboyism (424 comments)

Let me guess, you've come up with ideas that you thought would have benefited your employer, but the people with a broader perspective of the business decided that they weren't cost effective or viable, right? Ideas are like assholes: everyone has one. It takes an individual with foresight, leadership and determination to consider those ideas, pick the best ones, and apply the right amount of resources in the right places. The iPhone was one of probably hundreds or thousands of ideas Steve heard on a regular basis. He saw the potential and acted on it, effectively changing the entire mobile computing landscape. By the way, no one was stopping employee number 24621 from taking his idea and running with it. He chose to work at Apple because he lacks the skills, resources or connections necessary to bring his idea to life. This is where people like Steve Jobs are important. They bring those skills, resources and connections together to make a successful product.

It's hardly Orwellian if a private company is tracking you rather than the government. If you really do believe what you just said, you completely missed the point of 1984

DailyMotion Now Streaming Live News

iknowcss This Content is not Available (48 comments)

I've been dying to have access to BBC World streaming, but apparently being in the US prevents me from receiving European propaganda. Anyone know how I can watch this without getting the ever infuriating "this content is not available for your country"?

Colleges May Start Forcing Switch To eTextbooks

iknowcss Re:Students will complain (419 comments)

Wow, how long ago were you in college? These days you're lucky to sell back your book and get 20% of what you paid. The bookstore then turns around and sells the used book at 90% of the cost of a new book. Let's all hear it for capitalism :)

Security Lessons Learned From the Diaspora Launch

iknowcss Re:Axe job (338 comments)

Did you actually see the gaping security holes? Go to the linked page. I'll wait. It is disturbingly obvious that the developers have NO idea what they're doing to secure their users and data. These are total n00b bugs. If you start with this turd (even if it is "pre-alpha") and expect the FOSS community to be able to polish it into anything other than a turd, you are quite the idealist. I really had high hopes for this project, but now I'm terrified to use it.

I think a study should be done that correlates smartphone ownership with time spent per bathroom break. I think you all know why.

Wikileaks Now Hosted By the Swedish Pirate Party

iknowcss Re:Source (438 comments)

The system that Manning "hurt" through his actions is the same system that is punishing him. How is that even remotely comparable to the Nazis and hiding Jews? According to Nazi law, hiding Jews is an act which draws consequence. It wouldn't be surprising if the perpetrators were executed by that system for those high crimes. It isn't surprising, then, that this system is doing what its own code dictates. That doesn't make his court-marshal "right", per se, but seeing as he broke the laws of the system, IT DOES NOT MATTER if it's "right" or "wrong," The system's reaction must be to punish him under its own law.

Droid X Self-Destructs If You Try To Mod

iknowcss Re:How is this legal? (757 comments)

Really? How can I find one of these jurisdictions? Also, if you want to take Motorola to small claims court, can you require that the case be heard in your district, or do you have to go to them to have the case heard? Because last I heard, if you want to sue someone in small claims court, but they live in Utah and you live in California, you have to go to Utah to have the case heard.

Building a Nested Boolean GUI

iknowcss iknowcss writes  |  more than 6 years ago

iknowcss writes "I'm currently in the process of building an analytics tool for the company I work for. It's built 100% from the ground up to fit in well with various processes throughout the company. It's critical that it be able to algorithmically generate "lists" of information based on various search filters. I have a very solid idea of how I will implement the back end of this piece, but I'm really stumped as to how I should build out the web interface. A basic user should be able to build out a simple filter, say x AND y must be true for an item to show up on the list, but an advanced user should be able to nest filters to generate more complex lists. It would be real simple to give them a text box and have them type (x AND (y OR z)), but I'm not dealing with programmer types. Does anyone here on Slashdot have a fancy degree in interfaces like this that can lend a helping hand?"

Time Warner Losing Outbound E-mails

iknowcss iknowcss writes  |  more than 6 years ago

iknowcss (937215) writes "Seems like Time Warner has been having some problems with its recent mergers. Former customers of Adelphia have been sending in complaints over e-mail mishaps. Customers are reporting that their outgoing e-mails are being received by Time Warner mail servers, but are not being sent out. The user is given no notice of the failure. Customer support explains that user accounts and e-mails are being moved to the new Time Warner servers, and it could be more than a short while before the situation is resolved.

Could this be a sign of incompetence, a lack of planning, or a trivial migration gone wrong?"

Michigan State Gvt. Begins Partial Shutdown

iknowcss iknowcss writes  |  more than 7 years ago

iknowcss (937215) writes "As lawmakers fail to reach agreement on recent tax reform bills, the Michigan state government has come to a partial halt in operations. From the New York Times article:

Michigan began to shut down much of its government early Monday after lawmakers failed to resolve a $1.75 billion budget deficit before the new fiscal year started.
