Scott Steinberg: Video Games are Dead

jasoncart jasoncart writes  |  more than 5 years ago

jasoncart writes "Scott Steinberg (mass media games industry analyst/soothsayer) argues that the videogames industry is entering a state of transition, in which the way the business operates will change dramatically; digital distribution, the renaissance of the bedroom programmer and rising piracy colliding head-long with epic budgets, Hollywood pretensions and flawed business models.

As the industry 'splinters', Steinberg suggests that "It isn't interactive entertainment which is croaking per se — just the traditional definition of "video games" as we've previously come to know them.""

jasoncart jasoncart writes  |  more than 6 years ago

jasoncart writes "An interview with professional gamer agent Michael O'Dell discussing the money you can earn as a pro gamer and the perception of gaming as a sport.

jasoncart writes "Blade Interactive may just have something groundbreaking on their hands if what we're told about Hydrophobia proves true. The new game, being created for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3, has been in development in some form since 2000 — promising to revolutionise the element of water in games, with the project being headed by Huw Lloyd who has a PhD in computational fluid dynamics."

jasoncart writes "Persistent world MMO game Second Life is being investigated by German police amid allegations that the title is being used by certain members as a network for trading images of child abuse. A German television show sparked the police investigation after a news programme discovered an active trading group and members "paying for sex with virtual children". Police are now trying to identify the members involved in the group, with the game's creators Linden Labs working hard to assist the investigation."
