Doom Ported To the Web

jasonmicron Re:version of java matter? (248 comments)

It's javascript not java, so your browser version matters, something with a JIT compiler from the last 6 months will probably be able to display it at 30+fps (except Chrome, it doesn't render at all in either current or beta).

Ahh, gotcha. Yea my RHEL5 system is running Firefox 3, my WinXP box is running Firefox 4.

Doom Ported To the Web

jasonmicron version of java matter? (248 comments)

I loaded this up on my home server and tried it from two different systems.

System 1 - RHEL5 8 cpu 48g RAM - Java(TM) Plug-in 1.6.0_20 - 7-8fps
System 2 - WinXP 1 C2D cpu, 4g RAM - Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U22 - 35-45fps
System 2 wins. Graphics card unimportant as this isn't a 3D accellerated application. Not sure why the discrepancy is what it is, but whatever.

Sound does suck.

Microsoft Patents GPU-Accelerated Video Encoding

jasonmicron Re:TMPEGenc and NVIDA CUDA (304 comments)

That those companies are now infringing on Microsoft's patent, and royalties must be paid.

Sad, really. Is Intel in the back pocket of Microsoft? Why would Microsoft even WANT a patent like this?

The Movie Studios' Big 3D Scam

jasonmicron Re:Bigger scam for 1-eyed viewers (532 comments)

Actually, no there haven't. They've all been polarized using Real D and passive stereo. If you went to a movie that used the different color glasses, well, I'm sorry you wasted your money because you got scammed.

ASCAP Seeks Licensing Fees For Guitar Hero Arcade

jasonmicron Re:Showing muscles to the little guy? (146 comments)

ASCAP is as evil as the RIAA.

Hardly. ASCAP serves a very, very useful purpose. They protect the small guy from having their songs ripped off, mostly by the RIAA. If you put together a track of two trash cans banging together to a beat and get it registered with ASCAP, and ASCAP finds out that someone (be it bar owner, RIAA or any other band) is using that track in live performances, they will battle for you to get your licensing fees.

ASCAP is usually just the messenger. They don't normally go around trying to find songs being performed that are not in the public domain, they are usually tipped off about it by someone claiming they are owed licensing fees.

In this particular case, I wouldn't be surprised if the RIAA were involved as the person "tipping them off".

Microsoft Leaks Details of 128-bit Windows 8

jasonmicron Re:When will MS learn (581 comments)

Since when did they promise WinFS with Windows 7? WinFS was scrapped years ago and was never promised. But keep up with the irrational Microsoft hate.

Wii Update 4.2 Tries (and Fails) To Block Homebrew

jasonmicron Re:If you don't like it... (520 comments)

If you don't update your software and buy one of their latest games you're REQUIRED to update to the latest version of their firmware. You don't exactly have a choice.

Unless you just wanted to never buy a new game ever again for the Wii.

Super Mario Galaxy included a new version of the v3 menu I had to install before I could play it.

Your argument fails.

Most Useful UNIX Tool?

jasonmicron Re:Missing option (641 comments)

VHS has copy protection but it is easy to bypass. Just put scotch tape over the little square on the right on the label side. There is no DRM on an analog VHS tape.

Doctorow On What Cloud Computing Is Really For

jasonmicron Re:I'm not sure I understand (348 comments)

Yea, no, I'm not doing that. I'd rather keep my computer and not run a thin client and "trust" that the company isn't monitoring what I'm using "their" server cluster for.

The exception I have to that rule is Google docs.

Doctorow On What Cloud Computing Is Really For

jasonmicron I'm not sure I understand (348 comments)

I've seen "Cloud Computing" around as a buzzword but I never really cared to investigate what it really was.

I'm assuming it is essentially paying a data center to host my data from my home system? Why in the hell would I even WANT to do that?

Or did I completely miss the bus? Something I missed?

Sony and Nintendo Step Up Anti-Piracy Efforts

jasonmicron Re:And yet they've given up on Wii piracy (147 comments)

For the love of all that is holy, a knock-off of a clearly copyrighted video game is NOT piracy, it is copyright infringement.

Is this a hard concept to grasp for you?

Piracy is downloading and playing a game that is sold in stores without purchasing the game or any other software in question. Sheesh. I am getting stabby just reading your replies.

US Court Gives 15 Months' Jail, $415,900 Fine For Game Piracy

jasonmicron Re:I'm okay with this. (525 comments)

Yea, how dare he sell games that he didn't create and collect 100% of the profits that no one else is interested in selling.
