TrueCrypt Website Says To Switch To BitLocker

javajeff Convenient (566 comments)

What makes TrueCrypt Convenient is that I can have an encrypted envelope that I can drop on a usb drive and then access it from Linux or Windows. I do not always want to encrypted a HDD or partition.

GNOME 3.12 Released

javajeff Re: Meet the new boss: (134 comments)

Cinnamon is very good, and much more dependable than earlier versions. If you have not tried it in a while, it is recommended.

Windows 9 Already? Apparently, Yes.

javajeff Re:9.1 (1009 comments)

I uninstalled all of the Metro apps. Therefore my Start screen is only used as a launchpad for my icons. I have boot to desktop enabled, so I never see the Start screen unless I need to launch an app that is not on my desktop. Windows 8 can be customized to work how you like it. I chose to make mine just like Windows 7 with all the performance improvements.

javajeff Run Windows 8.1 like Windows 7 (564 comments)

Windows 8.1 can be customized to work just like Windows 7. 1) enable boot to desktop. 2) uninstall all Windows 8 apps 3) change file associations to desktop applications like Windows photo viewer 4) place shortcuts to frequently used programs on metro start screen that has NO tiles

ALL DONE!

Yahoo! Sports Redesign Sparks Controversy, Disdain From Users

javajeff Yahoo bar = deleted yahoo account (172 comments)

I deleted my Yahoo account because of the static search bar and buttons that stays on every page and takes away from your viewable area of important things. Everyone on My Yahoo is complaining about the same bar as it really affects small screen devices and laptops. I completely gave up on Yahoo.

Ballmer To Retire

javajeff Windows 8 Workstation (633 comments)

Why would they need a Windows 8 Workstation? Companies can standardize on free Start Menu programs like classic shell. From what I hear, major Computer vendors are installing Pokki for Windows 8 Start Menu since they can customize it.

Windows 8.1 brings back the start button. While it only takes you to the start screen, you can have it go to the all apps screen instead. The start screen is a full screen start menu. I removed all live tiles on mine, and pinned all programs that I launch on it.

Ballmer To Retire

javajeff Re:Disagree (633 comments)

They are not copying the interface. Solid colors use less energy than gradients and shadows since video devices have less to display. The flat look is not for aesthetics, but for longer battery life.

Dropbox Wants To Replace Your Hard Disk

javajeff Re:Farts in their general direction. (445 comments)

Hard Drives last more like 2-3 years for anything over 500GB. The warranties are now 2 years on internals, and 1 year on externals.

Ask Slashdot: Good Tracking Solutions For Linux Laptop?

javajeff Intel Anti-Theft (253 comments)

http://www.intel.com/go/anti-theft

If your computer has Intel Anti-Theft, this will super cede the bios. No one will be able to use your computer in any way. They cannot boot to a usb or CD; they cannot access the bios. It will be a brick without the password or correct credentials from Intel.

Microsoft Reacts To Feedback But Did They Get Windows 8.1 Right?

javajeff Uninstalled it in 2 days (543 comments)

It took me forever to get it installed on my clean system due to likely high download demand. I thought it ran slower than Windows 8.0, and iTunes hung like crazy when opening. Other programs will likely need updates when this upgrade goes final. They added shutdown to the right click start button menu. I cannot understand why they NEVER thought about making a SHUTDOWN TILE in the first group of tiles. that would have saved them a bunch of early adopter complaints.

Windows 8 Even Less Popular Than Vista

javajeff demographics (791 comments)

I have a free upgrade that I have not installed. What demographic am I? I am perfectly happy with Windows 7 since it has a start button. Windows 8 boot times are a cheat since it is a hibernation mode. Windows 8 is cheap so people can buy stuff from the Windows 8 store. Windows 8 offers no benefits for desktop computing.

javajeff Metro as an App! (663 comments)

Windows 8 desktop should have been Windows 7, and then they could have the Metro interface as an App. Invert the whole thing and they have no complaints.

iGoogle is gone :(

javajeff javajeff writes  |  about 9 months ago

javajeff (73413) writes "It is an unhappy day for millions of people that found their favorite start page missing. I have tried many of the other free start pages, and they are either slow or have some other form of advertisement or aggravation. I have decided to change my habits and use the Firefox default start page with the search box set to Bing. That will teach them! I used all the Google services including search through that page, and now my goal is to rely less on Google services. What do you now use as your start page?"

javajeff (73413) writes "I decided to buy an extra 2 GB for my Windows Vista Ultimate. I installed the two new sticks, turned on the computer, and found that Windows only sees 3326MB. Apparently, 32 bit Windows will not see anything over 3.XGB due to memory mapping. Here is a Knowledge Base article from Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929605 on the subject. My bios shows all the sticks installed, and I moved them around to make sure they were all working properly in a 2GB situation. I also ran Ubuntu off of the 7.04 CD to try, and it also did not detect all of the memory. I have an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6300 and an Intel Desktop Board DG965WH. My question to the Slashdot community: Is there any way to use 4GB without installing the 64 bit Vista Ultimate?"
