Mayday PAC Goes 2 For 8

jaxn SFW–– at least Lessig is seriously try (224 comments)

Lawrence Lessig was so seriously influenced by Aaron Swartz with his ideas and his question to Lessig, “How do you ever think you’re going to make any progress on these issues so long as there’s this corruption in the way our political system works?”

Lessig's response to this conversation was, “This was Aaron, this was the way he worked,” Lessig said. "It was never, ‘This is what you should do.’ It was, ‘What about this? Shouldn’t you be thinking this?’ And it made you recognize that if you wanted to be the person you thought you were, you had no choice but to yield.”

Personally I've supported MaydayPAC and have tried to help spread awareness of it. I do wish Tim Wu and Zephyr Teachout had won in NY this summer. However I'd actually rather see Tim Wu (the man who coined Net Neutrality) as the chairman of the FCC.

The Inevitable Death of the Internet Troll

jaxn Re:swearengen (571 comments)

I was thinking about Al Swearengen too, when I saw the original submitter's name. Too funny.

To quote the GREAT Al Swearengen (slightly on-topic):

Every fuckin’ beatin’ I’m grateful for. Every fuckin’ one of them. Get all the trust beat outta you. And you know what the fuckin’ world is.

Mysterious, Phony Cell Towers Found Throughout US

jaxn Re:They used to be called UHF TV tuners (237 comments)

I'd take John Oliver's approach to rebranding the NSA. He suggested "Mr Tiggles" with a pink background and smiling cat, to General Keith Alexander.
How about "Mr Tiggle's Friend, the Fuffy Bunny"

Ask Slashdot: What Old Technology Can't You Give Up?

jaxn grep/tail/cat/sed/awk/cut/uniq and so many others (635 comments)

- All those tools built in the 70s for UNIX and ported / rewritten many times over the years.
- Also, Model M keyboards (even though I use my MBP15r for everything, I still need those keyboards).
- Atari 2600 - it just feels better than playing on an emulator.
- I suppose electricity and the wheel - two of the greatest inventions.

Cisco Opposes Net Neutrality

jaxn Re:Density Myth. . . (337 comments)

OR they went to the suburbs first because running fiber in a metropolis such as New York City is complicated and expensive. In Manhattan the average monthly apartment cost of $3,973 I'd hardly say it's full of poor people. Yes, Verizon covered the rest of the state with FIOS long before it made any decent headway in NYC, but now they're reaching the end of their agreed upon timeline to complete their network buildout (which provided them fewer obstacles than other companies).

Favorite Single function, non-computerized Office Tool

jaxn Re:Mechanical Pencil (641 comments)

I have to agree with you that the mechanical pencil is the most important single-function utility in my office/on my person. I use my staedler .5mm all day long.

Unfortunately I do have to use a separate eraser (staedler extendable)... so the mechanical pencil needs a complimentary tool with it. I could use the built-in eraser, but I usually choose not to.
