South Park's Episode 201 — the Expurgated Version

jcarkeys Re:Throw their weight around (1224 comments)

"Canada on Strike" was about internet fads. Chocolate rain, Numa Numa, Star Wars Kid != South Park.

jcarkeys Re:Goody! (115 comments)

They have some of the days of the Iran-Contra hearings. I don't know if it was all of them, but some was up there. I don't know what particular day the OP was referencing, I was trying to find what he's talking about.

I prefer my (non-technical) books to be ...

jcarkeys Re:Printed, bound, (390 comments)

I especially like them because then it means I don't have to dog ear the page to mark my place. If there's something I want to remember, I can then dog ear the page, and still use the ribbon to keep track. Yeah, I could use a pen or a bookmark or whatever else to mark it, but I only had to bring along the book, nothing else.

jcarkeys Printed, bound, (390 comments)

and of course, in hard back.

I discovered the Everyman's Library series a while back and have come to love them, and have started a collection of them. The ribbon bookmark, nice binding, good "extra information", as well as the award winning Pevear/Volokhonsky translations for their Russian books.
Not shilling, just pleased, and want to share with the Slash-hordes

Accidental Wii Suicide

jcarkeys Re:Suicide? (1343 comments)

1. ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.

-- NRA Gun Safety Rules

By your rule, a gun is never in control if you're firing it, or if it's even loaded. If I load my shotgun, then yell "pull", my firearm's not under control, even if I'm aimed at the flying clay pigeon. Good to know that you've never safely operated a firearm.

Should I Take Toyota's Software Update?

jcarkeys Re:You're looking at it wrong. (750 comments)

The Prius does have a decent amount of power, until the battery runs out. Then you're sitting on the tiny little 76HP waiting til you reach the top of the mountain so you can get some regenerative braking.

Nokia To Make GPS Navigation Free On Smartphones

jcarkeys Re:What, no E75 love? Huh? (300 comments)

My E71 can use Ovi Maps, but the only problem is that as of now you have to use a subscription, over the air system to get navigation (just like Google maps, sans subscription). What this new update does is allow offline navigation, but that new option hasn't been released (yet?) for the E71.

That's for Ovi Maps, not "Ovi Maps - with free navigation".

Did the US Take the Back Seat In Science In 2009?

jcarkeys Re:What's this 'we' thing ? (502 comments)

Slashdot is run by Americans, after all, and the vast plurality of our readership is in the U.S.

Does that make you feel better?

The poll also didn't specify personal mail. In the five months of my internship, I hand addressed, labeled, and stamped at least 100 pieces of mail.

A Tale of Two Windows 7s

jcarkeys Re:So what? (770 comments)

For the first time ever in a new Windows installation I didn't feel compelled to immediately set up my video drivers. Everything worked smoothly enough. Of course, I did eventually load them up, but it didn't even require a reboot. Needless to say, I'm very pleased with Windows 7 so far.

Cellphones Increasingly Used As Evidence In Court

jcarkeys Re:"Right" to a private cell phone? (232 comments)

Sure, we can turn our cellphones off ... but the slippery slope leads to the idea that we shouldn't expect privacy in our homes because they have windows and doors

Actually, you don't have a right to privacy to anything that can be seen through your windows. It's called plain sight. It's the reason you should never just let a cop inside your house (anything illegal sitting around is fair game) or just leave the baggy of weed in your car on the front seat. Because it's plainly visible and anyone can see it.

Using Your BlackBerry As a Modem On Linux

jcarkeys Nokia does it just fine (135 comments)

I plugged in my shiny new Nokia E71 into my Ubuntu 8.10 machine and it automatically started configuring it. I have no need to use it in this manner so I stopped it, but it seemed like it would work fine.
