Christmas Always On Sunday? Researchers Propose New Calendar

jdpars Re:Not a bad idea but... (725 comments)

Messing with calendars has disastrous effects. Seriously. It's a weird thing to study, but those who do do not see good coming from making the calendar "just a little bit better."

Google Outlines AI-Based Number Reading For Street View Photos

jdpars Re:Captcha just failed (68 comments)

Except that house numbers are generally made to be readable at a distance, whereas captchas are made to be readable up close, with scrutiny.

Ask Slashdot: Most Efficient, Worthwhile Charity?

jdpars Re:Charity Navigator (570 comments)

Either way, some part of revenue from the search engine is going to charity. You aren't generating anything new by using Bing's donation feature, just clicking a button to do what Google apparently already does.

US Senator Proposes Bill To Eliminate Overtime For IT Workers

jdpars Not Congress's Business (1167 comments)

I hate how Congress thinks it can legislate anything it wants, and whatever it can't legislate in can hold a "hearing" on and then impose some ridiculous punishment. Interstate commerce. It's not meant to be a gateway for doing whatever the hell you want, it's supposed to be highly restrictive and limiting.

Subsidizing us? You think it's more expensive to stream a movie to a computer than to mail a physical disk? Really?

I guess we just need someone to beat them at their own game. How can we get the MAFIAA to go after them?

I'm sorry your childhood was rough. Please, don't attribute that kind of harsh upbringing to a religion.

HIV Vaccine Trial Shows 90% Immune Response

jdpars Re:90% chance that prostitue won't kill you (386 comments)

I think this may have been a reference to the now-infamous "your an idiot" response. Not sure though. 50% possibility it's an actual idiot, 50% possibility of a reference.

The Dead Sea Scrolls and Information Paranoia

jdpars Re:Why has it taken 50 years? (585 comments)

How, exactly, would you "ultimately prove" anything about life? I'm a very religious person, and I love science, but I also know that humility is the biggest key to seeking understanding about the world. Not every religious person is anti-science. Many of us fully embrace both.

Star Wars: The Old Republic Launch Date Announced

jdpars Not a Coincidence (125 comments)

Right after Diablo III gets a delay until at least January. I didn't believe the people saying there was a connection, but the timing here is more than a coincidence.

EPA Bans CFC-Based Asthma Inhalers

jdpars Re:Quantitative? I'll take a shot at it. (394 comments)

About your last point, really consider this: Which is going to help more asthmatic children in urban areas: forcing their parents to buy them more expensive medication, or removing the pollutants from the inhalers? And also thank you for pointing out individuals in the GOP's lackluster lineup, rather than blatant remarks about all conservatives.

Ask Slashdot: Could We Deal With the End of Time Zones?

jdpars Re:"So why aren't we doing it?" (990 comments)

If the US is doomed, then let it die. The entire point of our founders was that even "people this stupid" have the right to govern themselves. If you really don't believe that, then let the system kill itself off.

Injunction Blocks "Don't Be Friends" Law For Missouri Teachers

jdpars Re:Not "the government" (150 comments)

The many states being allowed to have varying laws is actually shown to be effective here. Missouri tried something new and failed. The rest of the country can choose to take what happened here into their own decision making process. One state now suffers the consequences of passing a law like this, instead of the entire population.
