Beginning GIMP: From Novice to Professional 2nd Ed

jetsci Great book (232 comments)

I picked this up for my personal use. I used to use CS3 and the like for work and that was fine but I was tired of booting into Windows to help clients. I know game!designers use gimp. Gimp itself is a great product, I did notice that the book was solid but it left a lot to be desired in covering the lackluster interface. Your mileage may vary.

jetsci Game AI!? (378 comments)

Totally overrated. Give me a target dummy or some 2d targets to wail on(ala http://wittyrgp.com) and I'm content. What happened to old-school style rpgs?

Internet-Caused Mistrials Are On the Rise

jetsci Always on (414 comments)

I fail to see the problem with always on internet. Sure, its not appropriate in some places but I couldn't imagine now having access to game! or youtube when I want them. Don't tread on me!

Did Bat Hitch a Ride To Space On Discovery?

jetsci Re:119V-0080 (422 comments)

Frankly, I have a lot of time to waste at work. All I do is play games or read lol*funny animal*. I'm sick of the lol-phenomenon. Gave me a clever game(like wittyrpg.com) and I'm content for hours. Not sure where this craze started but I wonder what will replace it?

Quick Boot Linux Hopes To Win Over Windows Users

jetsci Re:Hibernation? (440 comments)

I like my HP because its a power-house. Its certainly lighter than a desktop. Whats the issue? I also like my X60T but it does come close to the power I can put out with my HP DV9000. So, I 'tough out' and carry my anchor around. More sissies.

Really? I traveled weekly for 2 months carrying my personal laptop and my work laptop. Get a better bag.

Back breaking? I carry around a 17" HP DV9000 fully loaded laptop and barely notice it. Perhaps you should get some exercise. Certainly beats carrying around my old kit, 70lbs ruck-sack, 16lbs rifle, and ammo. Sissy.

Also, the Arctic is in fact an Ocean...Oceans contain salt which dramatically lowers the freezing point of water.

US Forgets How To Make Trident Missiles

Freezing point of water changes with pressure. I imagine that these subs are not firing at the surface but rather below it?

Is Safari an integral part of the OS? Nope. Can you remove Safari? I think so but I haven't used a mac in ages.

There still seems to be a serious lack of Blackberry love from Android. Why is that? Any suggestions/guides for going about getting Android on mine?

jetsci Detection (87 comments)

Anyone know the procedure for detecting these? I imagine A/V companies setup 'honeypots' of sorts on high traffic networks and that but how do you detect something new like this? Do they track it through an old signature?

I'm curious, in your opinion what is a better use of my learning time? I'm learning bash scripting and python scripting at the moment as I am a sysadmin with a lot of time. What do you propose I learn instead?

Internal Government Software

jetsci jetsci writes | more than 5 years ago I work for a rather large branch of the Canadian Government(read, Communication Regulations). We use a great deal of custom apps for the purpose of tracking licensees and such. None of these apps are particularly demanding - simple database front-ends. However, we're required to run Win2k and will soon be 'Upgrading' to Vista. I'm rather apprehensive about the whole move. Windows 2k is serving me well at work but I miss my Debian desktop machine and am considering booting from a live CD. My concern is making my apps run with wine and not being detected internally as an unauthorized system(we use software to confirm OS machines associated hardware to gain access to network - among other things). Can I pull it off and maybe convert a few colleagues in the process?
