How Does Heartbleed Alter the 'Open Source Is Safer' Discussion?

jlbprof Code written by Humans is always flawed. (582 comments)

At least with FOSS, you can quickly identify and fix problems that show up. Proprietary software fixes only happen when they have no other choice but to fix it.

Windows 8 Metro: The Good Kind of Market Segmentation?

jlbprof The proper way to use Windows 8 (389 comments)

This works for both the power user and the casual user. Sit down to the Windows 8 computer. Make sure you have a Windows 7/Mac OS/Linux computer next to you. Now the moment you get confused about the Windows 8 screen, go to your other computer and click Google. Then type how to .... That is how I do it for Win 8 and Server 2012, and I have been using Microsoft since DOS 1.0 days.

eBay CEO: Amazon Drones Are Fantasy

jlbprof Let's suppose the challenges are overcome (189 comments)

Several types of systems could be developed including competing ones. But if you think about this, it could backfire on Amazon, because if there are local operators that offer the service to local merchants, and since Amazon now has to pay sales tax, the local merchants may be able to compete with Amazon.

eBay CEO: Amazon Drones Are Fantasy

jlbprof Re:There are certainly challenges (189 comments)

You are right about altitude the higher up the stronger the winds and lower the temperature and air pressure. Some engineers would have to determine the optimal flying range of those parameters for the drone.

eBay CEO: Amazon Drones Are Fantasy

jlbprof Re:There are certainly challenges (189 comments)

If you live in Chicago, regardless of where it originates it has to fly down your street to your house or apartment and if it is windy, it could be a problem.

In Chicago, that would be every day. There is a reason they call it the Windy City.

jlbprof There are certainly challenges (189 comments)

I am concerned about the technical challenges, such as a 10 pound drone being buffeted by 25 mph gusts of wind, can it stay on track?

Professors Say Massive Open Online Courses Threaten Academic Freedom

jlbprof Tenure (284 comments)

What it really is affecting their freedom through tenure to do whatever they please rather then trying to serve the public as they should be by teaching. I hope this kills the concept of tenure, having absolute job security is analogous to having absolute power, IMHO.

Ubuntu Will Now Have Amazon Ads Pre-Installed

jlbprof Re:I see (646 comments)

The concept is simple, both Unity and Gnome Shell say do it our way or hit the highway. We hit the highway. One size does not fit all, nor does one desktop pattern fit all work flows. If your workflow is simple, then Unity is great for you. But those of use that need more flexibility we have to move on.

Ask Slashdot: Making JavaScript Tolerable For a Dyed-in-the-Wool C/C++/Java Guy?

jlbprof Integer arithmetic warning (575 comments)

My latest endeavor with JS made me very upset. JS does not do integer arithmetic well. Example to do a proper integer addition that is reliable I have to do the following: a + b | 0 or it could end up with decimal values. It wasted several hour of my time to find that one out.

jlbprof Gnome will die by the hands of Cinnamon (314 comments)

I think it is a great idea, and to the points about the Gnome 3 and Cinnamon diverging, yes they will diverge. But I bet Gnome will die and most linux platforms will adopt Cinnamon. Good work guys. Stick something in there eye :)

Irish Man's Death Ruled Spontaneous Combustion

jlbprof Spontaneous Combustion is just that (224 comments)

It's not magic, it's not ghosts. They just don't know what caused the spontaneous combustion. Just like in UFO's it's an unidentified flying object not an alien saucer they just don't know what it is.

Ancient Programmer Tidbit

jlbprof jlbprof writes  |  more than 2 years ago

jlbprof (760036) writes "When I was a young programmer (back in Apple II days). I had a much older programmer as a mentor. He once told me something that I have not seen anywhere written yet it is an absolute truth.

A Control Character's value can be calculated by bitwise anding the character with 0x1F.

Example: Carriage Return is a 0x0D or a control M.
M is 0x4D & 0x1F = 0x0D Voila!

Did you know that?"

Julian writes "I am a programmer not a hardware person.

In regards to ink jet printer companies using DMCA and patent infringement lawsuits to prevent third party refilled or replacement printer cartridges. What is the likelihood of developing a reasonably priced Open Source Printer? My idea at the moment is to have a fully functional design with firmware (if needed) and driver ready to go. Then some manufacturers can take the design and produce it and sell it, the printer should use existing third party ink cartridges.

Comments?

Thanx

Julian"
