US Army To Transport American Ebola Victim To Atlanta Hospital From Liberia

josepha48 the strain..... (409 comments)

I think with all the sci-fy shows like the strain, zombie this and zombie that, people are terrified that something like this will cause the apocalypse. So I am sure when this hits mainstream news people in Atlanta will flip out and the preachers will have thier field day. As long as those stupid religious end of the world fanatics don't do something stupid, it will be fine. All it takes it one fanatic trying to cause the end of the world and we will have ebola here.

Congress Proposes Strategy For Fighting Patent Trolls

josepha48 they should crowd source it (96 comments)

The patents in question should be crowd sourced. Basically people could sign up and say I know about technology X and then when a patent in that area comes into question the group is notified by email or rss feed or something and then those outside of the USPTO can help find prior art to discount the patent.

British Telecom Claims Patents on VOIP Session Initiation Protocol

josepha48 IETF protocol standard? (116 comments)

WTF: SIP is an IETF standard, so these people should not be holding any patents, otherwise it is another useless standard. It would be like if http protocol was patented and they required you to pay to implement it.

Do Patent Laws Really Protect Small Inventors?

josepha48 the original intent was to protect the inventor (267 comments)

however this has changed as the inventor usually ends up giving up his invention to a mega corporation he works for. So at this point patents are used solely to sue someone either into large sums of money or out of business.

Ask Slashdot: How Long Do We Give an Online Service To Fix Issues?

josepha48 it took me 3 years to get earthlink to fix my dsl (113 comments)

yes 3 years before they sent an AT&T person to my house to look at the wires. He then fixed it in minutes. It now works fine. Yes I still have DSL only because my Comcast cable TV goes out monthly. At least if I loose cable I can still watch netflix, hulu and online stuff.

Apple and Google Joining Forces On Kodak Patents Bid

josepha48 we need new laws (97 comments)

that ban the sale or trade of patents. patents were designed to help individuals and now they are just corporate lawsuit tools to go after anyone for anything stupid. if you could not buy patents then when a company goes under all their patents go into the open domain and new companies could profit from using them as well as old

Apple Claims Ignorance of Jury Foreman's Previous Tangle With Samsung

josepha48 Re:What's up! (186 comments)

I wonder how much trouble he can get into. Usually during jury selection they ask have you had any bias to and then list out companies and their parent companies and affiliate companies. They are usually pretty thorough in listing companies.

Unredacted Filings Reveal Claims of Juror Misconduct in Apple vs Samsung Trial

josepha48 Re:He didn't disclose what he wasn't asked (282 comments)

You are always asked if you were involved in lawsuits against a company. He would have been given a list of companies that Samsung has stock in or owns in part or in whole and if any of them he had 'bad feelings' against any of those companies. It is how I got out of jury duty because one of the companies was a company I did consulting at. You have to disclose that information otherwise you have a conflict of interest.

Apple v. Samsung Jurors Speak, Skipped Prior Art For "Bogging Us Down"

josepha48 having actually worked at the patent office (506 comments)

and given that there were lots of patents, trademarks, and more importantly the ever so vague trade dress infringements. I wonder if the jury actually made the right decision or just went with the home team ( apple ). From personal experience , when reviewing patents and prior art, the first time can take longer than a day to review. You MUST read the patents, and more importantly UNDERSTAND the patent claims and figure if the claims are broad or not. The claims are what the patent is really about and infringement means that device b actually is covered in the claims. Also additions to a feature can mean that feature is not infringing on a claim and could be a new enhancement to a device. So if Samsung took apples device and improved the device in any way, then it could be considered not infringing and a new device or new feature. Personally I believe this is Apple's way of destroying it's competition. Rather than innovate new, it is going to sue it's competition. In fact it's only real competition has been Samsung in the phone space, as all others are not doing as well in the US.

Microsoft Picks Another Web Standards Fight

josepha48 Re:Some things never change.... (211 comments)

True, on our site IE (7 on up) make up 50% of our traffic and Chrome is about 15% and growing. Safari and iOS Safari (not totally the same thing) make up about another 25% and Firefox has about 15%. However like the video codecs in HTML5 where they split and you have to have video encoded 3 ways I could see MS making us web developers code 2 ways or us having 2 standards.

Google Warned Samsung Galaxy Tab Was "Too Similar"

josepha48 too funny (251 comments)

So actually if you look at some of the patents that are flying around and being thrown at each other they actually all have been invented in some fashion or other before. I look at Palm. Palm had a phone that had icons that were laid out on the screen and auto arranged. This was one of apples claims against samsung and google. Palm had the 4 icons at the bottom of the touch screen before either of those two clowns did and the Treo was a phone with that feature first. Apple's suit over 'trade dress' is well silly. Yes Samsung is wrong in making it look so similar, but really is anyone that stupid that they would by a product from Samsung and think that it is an Apple ipad? The Samsung devices to not have the Apple logo on them anywhere. Dumb idea on Samsung's part? Yes, but Apple is going after everyone like Apple invented the smartphone and the tablet. Nokia actually had a tablet out for sale before Apple. It had rounded corners and they played with different designs. I just cannot believe Apple is doing what they are doing. They are going after the competition via law suits. This sounds just like Microsoft going after Linux years ago as well as SCO going after Linux years ago. Lots of FUD.

Ask Slashdot: Finding an IT Job Without a Computer-Oriented Undergraduate Degree?

josepha48 nonsensical classes (504 comments)

Well those nonsensical classes will help you out if you ever want to do anything other than program. Also anyone can write code, but you really want to learn design patterns for the language that you are using as well as algorithms. Not all OOP languages use the same design patterns. JavaScript can only use a subset of Java / C++ design patterns. I find so many developers that can churn out code, but so much of it is bad and hard to maintain.

Today My roommate and I went to Comcast to exchange one of out cable box. It was acting a little funny. On certain channels, the picture was coming in blocky and pixelized. When I called them up about this I was told to exchange the box. Today we went in to exchange the box. The current box is a Motorola box. This is the newer box. The box they gave me was a Digital Instruments machine, which they no longer make.

When I said to the lady that it looked biger, she said it wasn't. When I said it looked like an older box I had traded in 2 years ago ( because it was slow and buggy ) she said they are all the same.

THEY ARE NOT THE SAME BOX! The clerk deliberately lied to me. In my opinion this was deliberate and she should be fired for blatently lieing to customers. Apparently we are not the only ones they lied to though.

When we got the box home we found IT was bigger than the original box we had ( we have 2 cable boxes ). This exchanged box was very slow too.

My roommate was so pissed he had me unhook the box and he took it back to them and complained to get the old box back.

I'm so pissed at Comcast, I'm tempted to do a commercial for Direct TV!

If I could only convince my roommate to get Direct TV now, as the place is in his name.

josepha48 josepha48 writes  |  more than 8 years ago Conspiracy aside, yesterday I heard a republican on Bill Maher say that we need to take our prison inmates and make them work. That in combination with the making illegal immigrants felons, make it such that people come across the boarder or are framed for drug usage ( easy to frame people for that ), suddenly we have a slave labor work force.

If you think this is not happening already, the prisons in Mississippi are publicly traded prisons, and people do get framed. If you want to deny this, then you are just fooling yourself and you probably believe that the world was created in 6 days.

josepha48 josepha48 writes  |  more than 8 years ago My roommate did not just click the link, the link had a username and password field on it, so he entered his.

He was caught by the fish, and then lied to me about it by saying that all he did was click the link.

I don't like being lied to! So I'm pissed at him about this!

josepha48 josepha48 writes  |  more than 8 years ago We'll its been at least a week or so, and the site is still up and the user still has their account that they use to phish. People have lots their Yahoo! accounts and Yahoo! has done nothing about this. After searching google and Yahoo!, it seems that there are many Yahoo! phish out there that deal with Yahoo! IM and numerous people have stated that Yahoo! has done nothing to help them and has not removed more than 5000 phishing sites. I'm not sure how accurate that number is, but after my experience with them, I've decided that I can see that as being a realistic number.

I wonder how many internet companies, banks, and such REALLY do anything to phishers and hackers.

josepha48 josepha48 writes  |  more than 8 years ago I've submitted this as a story to /., but don't know if they will post this. just in case they don't, I'm posting this here.

There is a new Yahoo! IM phish out in the wild. Its worse than any other phish, because all a user has to do is click the link and they loose access to their Yahoo! account. My roommate was caught in the phish, and all he did was click the link and he was locked out of his Yahoo! account.

The phish shows up as a IM from someone who has you in their buddy list. The IM has a link like most phish and says you should see these pictures. The link is to a web site ( / hohoho_christmas_hohoho [ don't go their if you are logged into a Yahoo! account ] ). If you are logged into Yahoo! IM and click the link, you are then locked out of your Yahoo! account. It actually changes your Yahoo! password and also your birthdate and possibly other things in your Yahoo! account. You then have to create a new account and abandon your old Yahoo! account.

Yahoo! does not supply a phone number or an easy way to contact someone about this type of abuse and help you get your account back. You can report it via an HTML form, but you probably wont be able to get them to get your account back.

I've reported this to Yahoo! but have a feeling that this is the start of a new phishing year in 2006.
