IT's Last Hope — a Job In the Boonies?

jpcarter Re:I've worked IT in the boonies (470 comments)

The monoculture is what would get me.

There are only so many times you can be told that 'you just have to go to The Creation Museum.'

We've had this conversation before.

Some people want a Cheap Ass Ultra Portable notebook computer with a 6 hour battery life.

Not everybody wants what you want.

A few dinners by a middle age bloke getting some on the side is corruption on a massive scale? What's wrong with you?

$20,000 dinners?

Yes. Sounds like about 10 - 15 nice dinners to me.

Those $500 bottles of wine add up fast.

Where To Start With DIY Home Security?

jpcarter Re:Home burglary is dead (825 comments)

Home burglary is almost dead. What's to steal?

Police impersonators invade Pleasant Hill apartment

"The intruders then rummaged through the apartment, took electronics and ran away to a vehicle driven by a third person."

"Investigators now believe that the robbers were familiar with the apartment and at least one of its occupants, and were looking for drugs, said Sgt. Scott Vermillion."

I disagree with your assertion that jigsaw puzzles are fun.

(You otherwise make a very good point.)

Windows 7: The Missing Manual

jpcarter Re:Shell context menu for folder you are in? (222 comments)

Wow. A cool feature I never knew I lost. Thanks!

A workaround might be to just use the navigation pane & select "Automatically expand to current folder" from Folder Options.

My bad for spreading misinformation again.

Yes, RDP on the iPhone has saved my ass a number of times.

Android Sales Surpass iPhone Sales

jpcarter Re:Does the droid and iPhone do this?! (668 comments)

Android has an ssh client--first thing I installed when I got mine. No idea about that other one, since I have zero interest in it.

iPhone does, too. If you jailbreak it.

(See previous conversations about iPhone not being designed for power users & IT admins.)

The End of the PC Era and Apple's Plan To Survive

jpcarter Re:Privacy (549 comments)

So far most of these new devices seem to have a huge tradeoff.. Privacy. There are very few apps on my iPod touch that allow me to keep my stuff within the confines of my home; especially if I am on the road and not on my own netwok. Until these privacy concerns are addressed I would hope PCs survive, otherwise the tech industry has done a monumental disservice to everyone. This all sums up my main dislike for Apple.

You are in the minority. I'm sorry.

We need a major privacy catastrofuck to educate the masses or sway public opinion. Even then, you're fighting cheap convenience.

Corporate IT Just Won't Let IE6 Die

jpcarter Re:Comes as default on the corporate IT Build (479 comments)

WSUS & GPO should solve that as soon as the computer joins the domain. It should be fairly seamless. Unless I misunderstand how corporate IT works.

Bloomberg Reports That Palm Is Up For Sale

jpcarter Re:No surprise. (240 comments)

The app-store makes things dead simple.

I don't think the target audience of the iPhone has never seen a piece of java code.

The change from WinMo 6.5 to Windows Phone 7 seems to indicate the walled-garden being where manufacturers are going (for better or worse).
