Ask Slashdot: "Real" Computer Scientists vs. Modern Curriculum?

jwegman Re:Young whippersnappers (637 comments)

Just for the record, it would be most unsettling if the person who built or maintained my car didn't know how to drive a manual transmission. In the same vain, I'm not terribly upset that my admin assistant isn't well versed in computer memory management.

Ballmer Hints At 'Metro-ization' of Office

jwegman Re:"The criticism died down"... oh really? (302 comments)

Exactly! I still loath and the ribbon and always will. It is an abomination of a UI element.

And Metro is even worse!

Want iCloud With Windows? Ditch the XP

jwegman Re:Lack of XP support isn't news anymore (393 comments)

I totally agree. I have a new Win 7 machine with 6GB of RAM and a nice fast i5 quad-core processor and I don't see any benefits over my old 3GB XP machine at work. What I do see is the same old Windows with a new shiny interface that makes it harder to find the settings I could always find easily in XP. There's something to be said for an OS being 10 years old; it's mature! Why the hell should I have to learn how to find and operate everything all over again? Oh yes, so Microsoft can make more money!

Another Windows 8 Pre-Beta Surfaces

jwegman Re:Ribbons? (534 comments)

Yes and leave it to Microsoft to break with the age old standard that any key combination containing F1 provides online help, not access to the navigation system.

Don't Count Cobol Out

jwegman Re:Baby Boomers + COBOL (274 comments)

Younger folks will look at that COBOL as something that needs to go and with Bob gone, we can slowly bring that system to the 21th century.

COBOL is not still around because "old Bob" won't get with the times, it's still around because there are untold millions of dollars invested in the code and it would cost many more untold millions to replace it. And for what? If it's working fine, there's no reason to rip it out and replace it. Business is about making money, not wasting money on today's latest fad.
