The Importance of Deleting Old Stuff

kent_eh Re:Air-gap. (177 comments)

my old emails (especially) are kept in the "CYA" file heirarchy.
It has served my intrerests a few times. "why didn't anyone warn us?"..."I did in this e-mail from 6 years ago (attached)".

Trees vs. Atmospheric Carbon: A Fight That Makes Sense?

kent_eh Re:That's revolutionary (363 comments)

Naive, maybe.

But planting trees is better than not planting trees.

Plus, they have other benefits. Like producing oxygen, food, shading the ground, absorbing water (as opposed to runoff), stabalizing soils, providing habitat for critters, they are affective windbreaks, and trees just generally make the place look nicer.

Elon Musk: We Must Put a Million People On Mars To Safeguard Humanity

kent_eh Mars has no magnetosphere (549 comments)

Screw Mars. Spend all that money on making it nice HERE. We have the means. We have the tech. We could have a star trek utopia right here... Free education, opportunity through small businesses, cheap housing, plentiful energy. We could have all that right here if we just put a smidge of effort into it.

Well, we could do that too.

But us fucking up the planet isn't the only scenario that might cause planetary extinction. Do you remember what killed off the dinsaurs?

New Raspberry Pi Model B+

kent_eh Re:So they update it, but... (202 comments)

It was never intended to be a powerful desktop replacement. Nor a high powered computing engine.
It is intended to be an inexpensive experimenting and learning platform.

US Forces Coursera To Ban Students From Cuba, Iran, Sudan, and Syria

kent_eh Re:For those who didn't know what the acronym mean (306 comments)

Sorry for the late response.
I was always taught that it is just good writing to expand your acronyms when you first use them in any writing.

Watch Bill Nye and Ken Ham Clash Over Creationism Live

kent_eh Re:I am reminded of pigs and engineers here (593 comments)

Don't you think that if the Creationists are able to poke holes in the other side's arguments then maybe the other side doesn't have a very sound argument.
Knowlege and verifiable facts can still be shot down by someone with superior rhetorical skills.
That doesn't affect the truth of the facts, but it can determine who "wins" the game.

Bill Nye To Debate Creationist Museum Founder Ken Ham

kent_eh Re:Bad call (611 comments)

That's the thing I am wondering about. Did Bill actually agree to this event?
Every news report I have seen is sourced *exclusively* from Ham and his website.
Nye's website and twitter don't mention it. No one has gotten an answer from Nye himself in any of the articles I have seen.
To paraphrase Richard Dawkins "This could be very good for Mr. Hamm's CV, not so much for MR. Nye"

Can the US Be Weaned Off Ethanol?

kent_eh Re:Ethanol is a crock nobody wants (330 comments)

Corn is not a good stock for producing fuel ethanol, that much is true. Not that there is something wrong with the ethanol itself, it is just a rather inefficient way to get there.

Thank you.

I was a bit worried about how far down I had to scroll to find this.

There are many other sources for combustable fuels that don't divert part of the food production infrastructure./pr>

Sadly, there doesn't seem to be a lot of pressure to put much effort into developing them. Seems that the pressure is mostly in the direction of "just keep doing what we have been doing".

How Early Should Kids Learn To Code?

kent_eh Re:logic (299 comments)

My son started using Scratch when he was about 10.
He saw someone else using it at school and asked me to install it at home, then he basically taught himself to program simple games in it.

Lately, he has been creating mods for Minetest, again entirely on his own (researching the file format, reading the project Wiki, dissecting other user's Mods, etc)

I have a bunch of Python resources standing by for when he wants to take another step up.

Ask Slashdot: Starting From Scratch After a Burglary?

kent_eh Re:buy a security system + cameras (770 comments)

And how, exactly, is that helpful if you get robbed while you are not at home?

Like OP already was?

You have, however, improved the armament of the thieves.

How Old Were You When You First Got a Cell Phone?

kent_eh Re:I'm old (330 comments)

And the 911 service still works on them
Those old transportables would have been AMPS phones, and there is no network remaining on the air (in North America, that I am aware of)that still supports that ancient standard.

They still are big users of uni-directional paging.
It's lack of location awareness is seen as a signifigant benefit in their business sector.

Ask Slashdot: Using a Tablet As a Sole Computing Device?

kent_eh Re:To me (417 comments)

Maybe there are some ases that he hasn't thought of, and he wants to get some other input?

I notice that printing isn't mentioned. Can a tablet print to a network printer? Or to a USB printer, assuming the tablet can do USB host? ?

If your granny is doing any amount of typing, a bluetooth (or USB) keyboard would be amost mandatory, I'd think. I can't stand typing more than a few words at a time on the virtual keyboard.

Ask Slashdot: Current State of Linux Email Clients?

kent_eh What else does a mail client need to do? (464 comments)

What features does a mail client need that the existing ones don't already have?
I'd rather have a relatively lean (read fast) client that performs it's core function very well, rather than a monstrosity that does a thousand things in a kinda half-assed way.

I go to trade shows (of any kind) ...

kent_eh Re:Huh? (105 comments)

Pretty much this.
The only relevant shows to my industry are held in other countries, and my boss won't send anyone below executive level. I certainly can't afford the trip + registration fees out of my own pocket.

One Musician's Demand From Pandora: Mandatory Analytics

kent_eh I have other priorities for these services. (227 comments)

For me, a higher priority would be to have these streaming services actually exist in my country.
I think that would do more for these artists to promote their music to a wider audience.

Vast Bulk of BitCoins Are Hoarded, Not Used

kent_eh Re:Speculators (438 comments)

3) there are very few ways/places to spend bit coins.
And, that's really the purpose of a currency, inn't it? To allow people to exchange units of the currency for goods and/or services.
