Wii System Menu 4.0 Released

kevind23 Re:Kills Twilight Hack, Temporarially (94 comments)

Well, I of course read that too, but previously Nintendo has killed off the Twilight Hack, and look how long it still survived. I wouldn't say it's permanently dead, but yeah, it's a possibility.

It doesn't kill the HBC, you're right, but I think it's better to be safe and keep the TP Hack option open, just in case something goes wrong.

Wii System Menu 4.0 Released

kevind23 Re:Kills Twilight Hack, Temporarially (94 comments)

Unfortunately, homebrew piracy tools are available, but you do have to go looking for them. Homebrew certainly doesn't imply piracy but in some senses, it enables it.

Wii System Menu 4.0 Released

Homebrew is not piracy. I paid for my Wii, and I'm damned well going to run the things that I want to run on it.

Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 "Lenny" Released

kevind23 Re:Blu-Ray? (386 comments)

Actually, you can just grab the base CD, and install the basics. You can choose to install from the internet anyway, and it's great if you need to install it on a machine that only has access to a wireless network. After you install the base system you can boot into it and select whatever you want, from whatever repos you want, of course.

Apple IIe Emulator Released For the Wii

kevind23 Re:Since Wii has a Web browser. (86 comments)

Why would anyone in their right mind use IE? Certainly Nintendo wouldn't stoop that low.

At any rate, that site doesn't even work on Linux, so I can't imagine why it would run on the Wii.

Not All Cores Are Created Equal

kevind23 Re:make -j 3 (183 comments)

The point of using this is so that you can compile multiple files at once. Obviously it can't impact how the application performs because that would require modification of the source code, and the compiler doesn't magically optimize it to work with multiple cores.

Google Voice Offering Invites

kevind23 kevind23 writes  |  more than 5 years ago

kevind23 writes "I checked my email this evening to find that Google Voice, which has caught the attention of Slashdot several times, is now offering free registrations on an invite-only basis. Unfortunately, unlike Gmail, current users cannot send invitations to their friends (or other interested parties). Google Voice is currently available in the United States, with free domestic calling and SMS, as well as cheap international rates."

Why Game Developers Should Support OSX and Linux

kevind23 kevind23 writes  |  more than 5 years ago

kevind23 writes "Although Mac OSX and Linux have a small (but growing) market share, Jeff from Wolfire Games argues that supporting non-Windows platforms can lead to a huge increase in game sales. Using their popular game Lugaru as an example, he shows how less-popular platforms, or more specifically, their userbase can be a powerful advertising force. This can lead to a dramatic increase in popularity and exposure, which usually means a large boost in overall sales.

The short article is an interesting read, especially for those working in game development and sales."

Shooter "Didn't Realize They Would Die"

kevind23 kevind23 writes  |  more than 6 years ago

kevind23 writes "Call in Jack Thompson: Currently serving a 210-year sentence in an Arizona prison, Evan Ramsey (now 20) was interviewed by ABC News about the shooting that occurred at his school, February 19, 1997. At age 16, he killed a basketball star and his school principal, now saying that he "honestly believed that if you shoot somebody, that they would get back up." Apparently, he wasn't able to make the distinction between video games and real life, although he was also influenced by his friends."
