Amazon Fake Products and Fake Reviews

kormoc Re:Ratings (240 comments)

Real names are nice, I suppose, but I'd rather they confirm that the person bought it or at least ordered it.

They do:
What's an "Amazon Verified Purchase" review?

When a product review is marked "Amazon Verified Purchase," it means that the customer who wrote the review purchased the item at Amazon.com. Customers can add this label to their review only if we can verify the item being reviewed was purchased at Amazon.com. Customers reading an Amazon Verified Purchase review can use this information to help them decide which reviews are most helpful in their purchasing decisions.

If a review is not marked Amazon Verified Purchase, it doesn't mean that the reviewer has no experience with the product – it just means we couldn't verify that it had been purchased at Amazon. They may have purchased the item elsewhere or had some other interaction with it. If we could somehow validate their experience with the product, we certainly would. The Amazon Verified Review label offers one more way to help gauge the quality and relevance of a product review.

Police Called Over 11-Year-Old's Science Project

kormoc Re:I recommend ... (687 comments)

From the story:
After talking to the student, it was decided about 1 p.m. to evacuate the school as a precaution while the item was examined.

So he talked to the student and was told it was a motion detector or whatever. He then decided to evacuate the school. Talking to the student didn't help at all in this case. He's just a dumbass.

Google employee gives up Microsoft MVP status

kormoc kormoc writes  |  more than 5 years ago

kormoc writes "Microsoft each year honors the "best and brightest" from the technology world as part of its ongoing Most Valuable Professional Award. Teachers, doctors, artists and others who share "real-world technical expertise" with the community as a whole are routinely honored. But there's one type of employee who has received the Microsoft MVP Award for the past six years — apparently has been told by the search giant not to accept the award anymore. Is this a Googly thing to do?"

MythTV 0.21 Released!

kormoc kormoc writes  |  more than 6 years ago

kormoc writes "New release! It's been quite a while, so there's lots of new stuff. Notably: autodiscovery (less manual configuration of new frontends), storage groups (no need for LVM/etc), support for multiple recordings on one DVB/ATSC multiplex, a couple new plugins, some new deinterlacing/video display options, and many, many other things.

The Release notes page in the wiki has the list of what's changed, but it's currently a couple thousand checkins out of date.

Standard release info:
  • Grab the release from the download section and please at least try to read the docs before asking questions.
  • The binary packages should hopefully be updated to 0.21 soon.
  • See this links section for a list of linux distributions based around MythTV.
