Oil May Be Finite, But U.S. Production Is Ramping Up

lotho brandybuck Not an either-or proposition! (745 comments)

After reading TFA, I say this: "Not surprisingly, Hamm considers some of the current administration's loans and subsidies for alternative energy ventures to be misplaced." is a pretty disingenuous statement. He seemed not to be against the new energy subsidies so much as pissed they were harrassing his company over a minor bird kill... and if the situation is as de describes I agree with him. Anyways, we should be able to do both... help kick start new energy sources and allow the market to continue to develop traditional ones.

Yep. It's like at some point we just sort made a collective decision in this country to just suck. Seems like we're giving up on big science and engineering altogether.

Massive Solar Tower Planned For Arizona

lotho brandybuck sponsorship contest (407 comments)

Think of the advertising and sponsorship possibilities! I am Larry Ellison, and my Oracle giant green energy penis is 30ft taller than Steve Jobs's Apple giant green energy penis! NO! I'm Zuckerburg, and even tho I don't have much geek cred, MY facebook green energy penis is 30ft taller than Larry Ellison's Oracle giant green energy penis! Really, with all the corporate cash on hand right now in some of the techs, investing in a giant green energy penis size war might make some sense.

Zynga Seeks $1 Billion In IPO

lotho brandybuck Re:Though High, Not Even Close to LinkedIn Hype (93 comments)

From the Wall Street Journal last two lines of the article: "In February, Zynga reportedly raised around $500 million from a group of investors at a valuation as high as $10 billion. The company is expected to go public with a valuation of up to $20 billion."

Zynga Seeks $1 Billion In IPO

lotho brandybuck Re:Though High, Not Even Close to LinkedIn Hype (93 comments)

I'm not going to try to understand the whole prospectus, but if they're "raising" 1B, their total valuation will be over that unless the current stockholders want absolutely nothing for their shares. Somehow I doubt that's going to happen.

Does anybody know what the estimated market cap will be?

I'm sad that there's so much valuation in this virtual crap as opposed to investment in solid manufacturing or infrastructure, like solar and LED companies, probably becuase that's what I'm in. But some folks obviously think the relentless march to Idiocracy (buying shit in the real world to better play games with your friends in the virtual world???) in this country will be quite profitable, and they may be right.

lotho brandybuck Freon, toxic? (191 comments)

AFAIK, freon and many other of the refrigerants are no more toxic than water... you CAN drown in them, and that is a hazard in enclosed spaces. And some of the refrigerants were ozone depleters, but the new stuff isn't.

Huge Amounts of Oil Found On Gulf of Mexico Floor

lotho brandybuck deep water is cold (426 comments)

Under 1000ft, seawater is usually under 4C. All the processes and critters that break down the oil work much slower in the cold. A lot of that area will probably remain dead until more silt falls over it and its recolonized from scratch. This is sad, but I doubt it was unexpected by anyone who knew anything.

Stanford, UCD Researchers Say 100% Renewable Energy Possible By 2050

lotho brandybuck Re:PR Puff Piece (360 comments)

I skimmed the articles too, the authors glossed over a lot, but where the heck are you getting your numbers? By way of example, a 3kW rooftop PV rooftop system TODAY would cost you around 3.50 / W for the modules (10.5k) and $2000 for the inverter, for only around 12500 in materials. (solarbuzz) You think there will be no more progress downward in PV module costs?

Mathematics As the Most Misunderstood Subject

lotho brandybuck Re:Being a mathematics undergraduate... (680 comments)

Funny you mention trig functions, I was just thinking this morning about the "black-boxishness" of trig functions.

I've wondered if maybe we'd be better of NOT teaching sin/cos immediately, and instead giving children Euler's identity first

Sadly, I've got to say, I never use Euler's, always the trig functions to solve real problems (I'm an electrical engineer.)

I've got a 3yrs old and a 2 years old and would love to see them have a better time with and a deeper understanding of math than I did.

Math was (and sometimes still is) a real pain for me, and I've never really understood why, becuase the rules are all very simple.

How Google Avoided Paying $60 Billion In Taxes

lotho brandybuck Re:Headline Is So Very Wrong (1193 comments)

Not just pay folks who know how to exploit, no, they can pay folks who actually write the tax code! (congress) Look at the tax code, there's all sorts of crap like "15% deduction for drilling oil wells between 1003 and 1047 feet, in fartknock county, oblivia..." The tax code actually fills several rooms.

On-Grid Energy Storage Using Ice

lotho brandybuck lotho brandybuck writes  |  about 5 years ago

lotho brandybuck writes "Tuesday I went up to Seattle to browse thru the IEEE Power Systems Conference and Expo.

Energy storage is needed for electrical grid peak loads. There's been a lot of pie in sky stuff out there... flywheels, fuel-cells, battery banks.

It was nice to see someone with a real solution. Ice Energy does HVAC units that freeze water at night, then uses this as an energy sink during the peak electrical load. hours. This works so well because they're taking advantage of the heat-of-fusion (energy needed to melt) of water. A very non-BS thing. In fact, the definition of a ton of HVAC came from the ability to freeze a ton of water in 24 hours.

They had a little booth there with a unit that was slowly melting a 7000lbs tank of ice.. running a little multi-split, keeping their booth-guy a little cooler and a little happier than the other booth people at the show."

Can Vegemite go bad?

lotho brandybuck lotho brandybuck writes  |  more than 2 years ago

Hello Samantha,

Picked up a jar of Vegemite here in the local grocery.. this is not a common product in the States, and it was past it's "best by" date. After some looking on the web I figured I wouldn't die, and I haven't yet. Does it eventually go bad?
