Generic PCs For Corporate Use?

maddskillz Re:$1000 a PC? (606 comments)

We use dells at work. 95% of the time there is a problem it's a failed hardrive. In that case they ship us the harddrive and we put it in ourselves. It hasalways been there the next day
In the case of a motherboard, which has happened a few times, they send the tech out. One time they weren't there the next day, but there was a huge snowstorm that day, so that may have been a factor.

Paperless Tickets Flourish Despite 'Grandma Problem'

Saying No To Promotions Away From Tech?

maddskillz Re:Negotiate (410 comments)

If something came across that doubled my salary, I'd be off like a shot and do it. I mean, really...if anyone here was independently wealthy, who would ever work again? Certainly not I.

I would. I work at a library and I can see the positive impact we are having on the community. Also, my co-workers are great, so it's nice to see them. If I one the lottery, I would continue to work..I would just come in a lot later!

My resting pulse, as of today, is ...

maddskillz Re:Strange pulse stories (329 comments)

I have the same issue. I went to the Dr, who sent me to a cardiologist. They hooked me up with a holter monitor to see what was happening over an extended period of time.
The conclusion was I was fine. They told me there is an amount of times your heart can skip, and you are still ok, and I was within spec.
I would still recommend going to a Dr about it. You could have a different issue, and maybe there is something they can do.
My problem went away when I quit exercising as much. I used to really push myself, but now I watch my heart rate, and don't let it go too high for too long.

Public School Teachers Selling Lesson Plans Online

maddskillz Re:*First post.. (590 comments)

I know a lot of teachers. Almost none of them spend a significant amount of time in the summer doing lesson plans. There is a good reason for this, though. The school board has a tendency to "bump" you from your job. So, you go into September thinking you are teaching grade 2, and surprise! you are teaching grade 4 now!
The ones I do know do spend a significant amount of time after school and on weekends doing lesson plans and marking.

World's Only Diesel-Electric Honda Insight

maddskillz Re:Gutless? (687 comments)

The site is slashdotted now, so I can't say..
But if you drive a TDI (turbocharged direct injection) you wouldn't say it's gutless at all. It has lots of low end torque for a fuel efficient 4 cylinder.

Why There's No iTunes For Movies

maddskillz Re:Actually, there is an iTunes for movies (474 comments)

Well but the problem is... it's iTunes.

While iTunes might not be something you want to use, it was the topic of the article.

World of Warcraft 3.1 Patch Brings Dual-Specs, New Raid

maddskillz Re:Exams (204 comments)

1000g is nothing. I made that and more without even trying on the way from 60-70. And I again made that and more without even trying on the way from 70-80. Throw in some heroic dungeons, a raid or two, some daily quests... You could have 1000g in less than a week.

When I played I could make 1000g in a couple of hours, buying greens, and selling the materials from disenchanting. It's not hard if you have the right professions and a server with a good economy.

Voting Machines and 'Calibration Drift'

maddskillz Re:Treason (217 comments)

The movie ticket kiosks at the theatre here seem to get miscalibrated all the time. Most people don't use them because of that. On the plus side, once you figure out which way it is miscalibrated, you can use it, and you don't have to wait in line

The 100 Degree Data Center

maddskillz Re:Were nerds here... use the f'ing metric system (472 comments)

It only makes more sense to people who grew up with it that way. To me, Fahrenheit is just confusing.
We can use the same logic as use with Celsius: 20 us nice, 25 is warm and 30 is hot. Having freezing happen at 0 can be particularly convenient. If it's a positive number driving should be good...if it's negative be careful.
I would actually say the Celsius scale is less arbitrarily defined as well. It's based on water, rather then ice, water, and ammonium chloride.

Audio Watermarks Could Pinpoint Film Pirates By Seat

I hope there are less obtrusive then the watermark images shown. Between having to see those, and the volume being set to 11, I think I will start watching movies at home more.

Bill Gates Unleashes Swarm of Mosquitoes

maddskillz Re:Just Like When He Led Microsoft (841 comments)

Definitely eliminating the mosquitoes is what he should be working for.
I am sure they server no ecological role at all.
Heck, why not use DDT? I think it's pretty good at controlling mosquitoes...
Either that, or maybe not everything has a simple solution.

Oprah Sued For Infringing "Touch and Feel" Patent

maddskillz Re:HAHAHAHA (249 comments)

She is far more then a talk show host now, though that is how she got her start.
She has films and magazines and tv shows (Dr Phil, Rachel Ray...)
Also, the target audience is upper-middle class women. And when Oprah talks, these women listen. Just try and get a book out of the library once it's in Oprah's bookclub.
