Sweden Considers Adding "Sexism" Ratings To Video Games

makq Re:Whoa whoa whoa (641 comments)

It would be disingenuous to suggest that sexism does not primarily impact women negatively.

Ask Slashdot: What Are the Strangest Features of Various Programming Languages?

makq Re:Powershell (729 comments)

Are you sure that we did not settle on UTF8 because of C, ASCII assuming legacy code and null terminated strings? With those in place, UTF8 makes sense. When stuck in a crappy situation, it may have been the best alternative?

Indiana University Researchers Get $1 Million Grant To Study Memes

makq Re:As a guy whose worked in marketing... (126 comments)

As someone who does not work in marketing, it seems like ad development is more like a crap shoot than a science. There are some major successes, but it seems there are 100's of failures for each of those.

Indiana University Researchers Get $1 Million Grant To Study Memes

makq Re:What happened to serious research? (126 comments)

If you cannot see how it would benefit anyone, you do not have much of an imagination. It could benefit marketers or anyone who wants to spread a message. This could include public service announcements or charity groups.

As long as the tree is growing more than it is decomposing, don't they sequester carbon internally?

Normal Humans Effectively Excluded From Developing Software

makq Re:just like EE, ME, CE, finance...... (608 comments)

Minor correction. Burger flipping in a modern fast food establishment is the epitome of specialization. The difference is that it does not take a high level of skill. This is by design.

The World's Best Living Programmers

makq Re:How can you take this list seriously? (285 comments)

Actually, it should have started at 0 and gone to 15. That's how the greats did it. Someday I wish we would stop being so great.

No Shortage In Tech Workers, Advocacy Groups Say

makq Re:19,000 (401 comments)

All the software anyone needs has already been written.

I would bet that 99.9% of software that people will need in the next 100 years and could get utility from has not yet been written. Not to mention upgrades to the software that currently does exist, and is pretty crappy.

Airbus Patents Windowless Cockpit That Would Increase Pilots' Field of View

makq Re:nice work (468 comments)

I took me back to last week when my Internet was down for 24 hours and I felt so helpless. All my devices useless. My iPad, my smartphone, my smart TV, my laptop... expensive decorations.

That is strange - all of those things work for me even if I have no internet.
