Why Do Contextual Ads Fail?

mapsjanhere Re:yep, timing and related products (249 comments)

Even worse, you buy a book series compilation volume 1-6, next day your recommendation have every single volume in it, because you just need them individually now too.

Man Shot To Death For Texting During Movie

mapsjanhere Re:His defense will fail... (1431 comments)

There will be no charges filed. The shooter is a retired local police captain, no DA will risk his reelection by losing the endorsement of the local police union.

Interesting, didn't realize that (I linked to the study directly, skipping the obviously mistaken secondary sources).

3-D Printed Gun Ban Fails In Senate

mapsjanhere Re:Good (414 comments)

You must be very patient if you believe ammunition to be degradable enough to lead to a shortage. People routinely fire WWII and 50's cold war surplus ammo with 90%+ success rate. Modern ammo, if stored reasonably, like inside your average US home, will last 100 years.

3-D Printed Gun Ban Fails In Senate

mapsjanhere Re:Good (414 comments)

Unfortunately, school shooters, while getting all the press, are an insignificant contributor to the gun death total. It's economically depressed young males with pistols that make up the majority of shooters, not people with assault rifles, 3 D printed weapons, full automatic guns, silencers or whatever else is the current scare theme is.

FEMA Grounds Private Drones That Were Helping To Map Boulder Floods

mapsjanhere Re:Reality... (356 comments)

Come on, give the guy a break. He was busy setting up the FEMA concentration camps for the 1000 people they were detaining, and didn't like the UAVs looking over his shoulder.

US Air Force Reporting Pilot Shortage

mapsjanhere Re:Obvious Solution (270 comments)

There's a real problem for the air force brass behind all this. Pilots are all "officers and gentlemen", drones are flown by enlisted people. Any large swing to more drones not only changes the combat environment, it changes the whole structure of the force. If you no longer have a large collection of ex-fighter jocks to staff your higher ranks with, the whole attitude of the air force as we know it will change in the long run.

The Man Who Convinced Us We Needed Vitamin Supplements

mapsjanhere Re:Diet and laziness (707 comments)

If you'd actually read the article and followed up on the data, you'd have realized that the plasma level discussed (50 mymol) is achievable with the normal recommended vitamin C intake of 100 mg/day. This doesn't say anything about needing to supplement the intake heavily, it just shows one of the reasons vitamin C is a vitamin aka something we do poorly without.

UCSD Lecturer Releases Geotagging Application For "Dangerous Guns and Owners"

mapsjanhere Re:Hypocrisy (976 comments)

It's an open source app - very easy to reprogram for that purpose. Just like for "18 year olds who love to drink and get flirty" and "best meth house in the city", the uses are endless.

RC Plane Attack 'Foiled,' Say German Authorities

mapsjanhere Re:Threat from r/c planes (233 comments)

Ye,s the RC plane will not take out an Autobahn bridge. But you start dropping bomb-loaded RC planes into a crowd in a confined area, lets say a Bundesliga game or a rock concert, and the resulting stampede will give you a huge damage multiplier. Or you start dropping it onto the speaker podium at some campaign event. Not every politician travels with his own personal flak battery. The idea of terror attacks is to create disruption, not affect war-like destruction.

RC Plane Attack 'Foiled,' Say German Authorities

mapsjanhere Re:As I sit here pondering.... (233 comments)

There's also the big difference that the Germans make a much clearer cut between criminal investigations (that have to obey the niceties of law) and counter terrorism activities (which are under a special internal security service and has much greater leeway). That wouldn't work in the US due to the fruit-of-the-poisoned-tree doctrine which throws out most evidence that is collected with a "dark spot" somewhere in the chain of acquisition. German law doesn't operate that way, and can still prosecute using data procured under questionable circumstances.

Bill Regulating 3D Printed Guns Announced In NYC

mapsjanhere Re:It's incredible to me (322 comments)

You're both trolling. The reason mass gun ownership is effective is not that the individual gun owner can fight of the swat team. It's that for every time the swat team goes out, 1000 others start worrying it might come to them. Once that happens, they start to realize it's not like the police lives in barricaded ghettos for cooperative defense, they're spread out in the community. Usually protected from harm by the sense of "they're here to protect us". When that "they are serving us" goes away, you suddenly have 1000 targets (plus families) spread out withing a town with 100,000 gun owners. How many of those are stable? Take the LA case, one crazy guy took out two cops and two family members before he was taken down by the combined effort of all police departments in a 100 mile area. How many of those cases would it take until cops stay home to protect themselves and their families?

IPhone cracked again

mapsjanhere mapsjanhere writes  |  more than 6 years ago

mapsjanhere (1130359) writes "According to The Register, the same teenager that broke the Iphone lock the first time has done it again, by finding a new attack vector to change the security firm ware. With the projected losses for Apple from unlocked phones being in the billion dollar range, it makes you wonder why Apple hasn't offered the kid a consulting job, say a million dollars and a full scholarship to MIT. Just to keep him from busy, and stop him showing off the futility of their efforts."
