Sally Ride Takes Her Final Flight

markbark Re:Charles Tart on moving past materialistic think (251 comments)

"while many skeptics and scientists deny the existence of these spiritual phenomena, the experiences of millions of people indicate that they do take place."

Sorry, the plural of "anecdote" is not "data"

Take all those experiences and add specificity and controls and maybe we can talk.

Scientists Say People Aren't Smart Enough For Democracy To Flourish

markbark Re:Not smart Enough? (1276 comments)

The 17th Amendment allowed for the popular election of US Senators.
Prior to that they were appointed by state legislatures with all the attendant cronyism and corruption so popular in Gilded Age politics.

Ask Slashdot: Good Metrics For a Small IT Team?

markbark Re:Hahaha (315 comments)

"The only "data" you provide is your experience, where are your statistics? It's perfectly possible that slippyblade speaks from experience too."

What? This is Slashdot, where "data" is the plural of "anecdote."

The NSA Wants Its Own Smartphone

markbark Re:There already is one, the sectera (172 comments)

That's two hours active use. But when you're going secure in the field it's because the shit has hit the fan and you need to weigh getting the mission done vs. possible leaks. Dunno why these things eat batteries. Maybe the crypto ASICs are particularly hungry?

Well... the forgotten or stolen problem is solved by the fact that you can do a remote wipe with a few keystrokes at the admin console.

SME-PED will bring SIPRNet to your hip, but the thing's a brick (35 mm thick and weighs half a kilo!) ....and don't get me started on the two hour battery life.

Mother, Daughter Face Drug Charges For Ibuprofen At School

markbark Re:Ahh. Good old Army Motrin. (34 comments)

Well.. the maximum recommended dose for ibuprofen is 1200mg.
OD's aren't _too_ dangerous, usually limiting themselves to stomach upset and nosebleeds.
In massive overdoses (greater than100mg/kg of body weight), it whacks your blood potassium levels, causing arrhythmia and possible cardiac arrest.
Massive OD's also toast your kidneys to a delicate crunch. {grin}

Toyota Acceleration and Embedded System Bugs

markbark Re:wrong language (499 comments)

The above was not intended to be representative of any particular computer language; it's pseudocode.
I would imagine that any code for an embedded system like a car computer would be in some flavour of machine code.

Regardless of the language the idea is the same: if you have ANY brake input, throttle input should be ignored.
