Game Hack-A-Thon Attracts Teams At 500+ Sites Worldwide

master_kaos Re:Unity? (31 comments)

What, so reinvent the wheel? It is suppose to be about creativity. Programming an audio engine, or dynamic light engine for the umpteenth time is not being creative.

Most end users don't care what engine was used, they don't know difference between crytek engine, unity, frostbite, or some homebrew, they just see the end result.

Ive seen good games and bad games on pretty much every engine.

Regular Exercise Not Enough To Make Up For Sitting All Day

master_kaos Re:Eat less (348 comments)

Yup same here. I go to the gym for an hour before work 3 days a week. Then at my desk I keep a cup. Since I drink so much water I generally have to refill the cup every 20-30 min or so. Sure it isn't a couple minute walk, but 20 seconds or so each way, and often Ill stop and stand at someones office and have a quick chat.

Intel Pledges $300 Million To Improve Diversity In Tech

master_kaos Re:Hire the best person (341 comments)

Well sure, but then there is obviously some other politics at play that should be addressed. We had about 5 resumes for an open position. 1 was clearly the most qualified for the job (perhaps even overqualified), runner up was still qualified but not quite as much. We interviewed our top choice and while they were brilliant they wouldn't have fit with the rest of the team (she was extremely serious with no sense of humour, rest of the team cracks jokes all day). Runner up had an awesome sense of humour. So we picked the 2nd person (who was also female), she been with us for 2 years now and was the perfect choice, she fits in amazingly with the rest of the team.

master_kaos Hire the best person (341 comments)

How about hiring the best person for the job, and fits well with the rest of the team regardless of gender, race, religion, sexual preference, etc? If it happens to be someone who is white, hispanic, or black who cares?

The Sony Pictures Hack Was Even Worse Than Everyone Thought

master_kaos Re:Can't avoid medical records (528 comments)

An idea, that I am not sure of or not, but how about company sponsored outdoor events? Like once a month or, every other friday all employees are encouraged (not required, but gets them out of work for the afternoon so they probably would want to) to go out and play a team sport like ultimate frisbee or soccer or something, could offer a company picnic as well like tuna salad sandwhiches. This could show them that exercising can actually be fun.

Just throwing out ideas.

The Sony Pictures Hack Was Even Worse Than Everyone Thought

master_kaos Re:Can't avoid medical records (528 comments)

Anyways what I was getting at is I wouldn't actually mind if my boss had a meeting with me and was genuinely concerned about my health and offered to help me any way he could. But the way he came off was just hurtful. Now this wouldn't be the same with everybody as some people still have blinders on and in denial, or just think it is a complete invasion of privacy.

The Sony Pictures Hack Was Even Worse Than Everyone Thought

master_kaos Re:Can't avoid medical records (528 comments)

I am overweight and 3 months ago my boss (owner of the company) had a meeting with my about my confidence level. He said I would probably have my confidence boosted if I lost 50 lbs.
It didn't upset me it was true, but I told him that I actually started losing weight 3 weeks ago (I actually did) and lost 15 lbs already. Now this is where 2 hurtful things he said came. First one was "it doesn't look like it". Fucking really? How encouraging is that. I don't expect him to say he notices that I lost weight or anything(because I doubt I actually did look any different) but what kind of comment is that?

The 2nd thing that was really hurtful was he asked "do you have diabetes?" Ok so he is concerned about me, so I said "no", but then he said "Oh, that's surprising, most people your size do". WTF.. I mean luckily for me I think he is a giant fucking idiot douchebag already, so I just think of him even worse, but those 2 comments did sting a little. If it would have been someone else who was more emotional or had depression or massive self-image issues they would have been left in tears or worse.

My boss is 70 years old chain smoker, I thought of it after, but I wish I would have said "do you have cancer?" and when he said no, reply with "oh, I am surprised, most people your age who still chain smoke are pretty much on their death bed"

This is a small company so he IS the HR, so don't really have someone I could go to. Luckily I love my job other than my boss (which I don't have to interact with very often) so I just shrug it off best I can.

Of course when I lose my weight he will probably be all self congratulating thinking how much of a motivational person he is motivating me to lose weight, forgetting that I told him I already started 3 weeks before the meeting.

What Canada Can Teach the US About Net Neutrality

master_kaos Re:The CRTC... (80 comments)

Yes and they also pushed 2 year contracts on cell phones vs 3. Guess what happened? Pricing went up at least 20% or more across the board within days, while data was reduced, even for those who didn't want contracts.

What I see of a la carte tv is $10 per channel. or for $20 you get a theme pack of 10 channels!
I bet a la carte will be seldom used because the pricing will be outrageous.

The Cashless Society? It's Already Coming

master_kaos Re:You can pry my wallet from my... (375 comments)

but only to protect against risks that only exist for credit cards in the first place

Ok, some of them are, but theft isn't. I couldget robbed in an ally, lost my wallet, etc. My cash is gone, my credit card is protected.
Either way, for me that couple percent is well worth the convenience, protection, and other perks (such as free car rental insurance, double manufacturer warranty, 1.5% cash back, free credit monitoring) all for no annual fees. Just the free credit monitoring itself has a retail value of $10-15 / month

Valve Rolls Out Game Broadcasting Service For Steam

master_kaos Re:The broadcasting is so nice... (92 comments)

That game is awesome. Still have framerate issues at certain parts, major audio problems, and objectives sometimes randomly disapearing/not working.
But this game has massive potential. Haven't had this much fun in a FPS in a long time. Lack of content is going to be an issue, but it is early access.

Between buying this game and prison architect on the weekend sale, I honestly haven't had this much fun gaming in a long time, all from "simple" games (prison architect far from simple) and all for a grand total of $20. Prison architect best tycoon style game I have played in ages.

Funny how a few of these early access games are wiping the floor of the AAA games
Top quality ones I have tried so far
Prison Architect
Aliens Colonial marines
7 Days to Die
Kerbal Space Program
Space Engineers
Broforce

and I am sure there are a few others I haven't personally tried. Of course there is piles of garbage, but a few diamonds and many more diamonds in the rough

The Cashless Society? It's Already Coming

master_kaos Re:You can pry my wallet from my... (375 comments)

except you don't have near the protection as you do with a CC
Being able to dispute payments, protection from fraud/stolen card is worth a couple percentage points to me
I also get 1.5% cash back (2% gas/groceries) .
Sure if everybody stopped using a credit card theoretically prices should go down 2-3%, but the thing is everyone wont. So in the meantime Ill reap the 1.5% cashback reward, thank you very much.

Ubisoft Apologizes For Assassin's Creed

master_kaos Re:I wonder if anyone here has actually played it? (171 comments)

why would someone from ubisoft shill an EA game?
I have it on PC, it definitely looks good, I wouldn't say spectacular, but I am also only running it on medium as my aging 560 TI just isn't cutting it anymore for a 1440p res. was hoping for a good deal black friday for a 970 but can't find any.. Oh well hopefully either cyber monday or boxing day.
