Firefox Signs Five-Year Deal With Yahoo, Drops Google as Default Search Engine

master_kaos Re:Ba Da ... (382 comments)

thanks for letting me know. I was preparing to evaluate linux distros for personal use, and mint I thought was a top contender but if they are such dicks that they actively try to not let me use google as a search bar then they can go fuck themselves (even though I would uninstall and use chrome anyways). Who knows maybe next update they won't allow you to even install chrome without sigfaulting.

City of Toronto Files Court Injunction Against Uber

master_kaos Re:What do the hipsters say? (168 comments)

I live an hour away from toronto. It really is littered with hipsters, and it seems like the ripple effect is starting to make it near my hometown.

Three-Way Comparison Shows PCs Slaying Consoles In Dragon Age Inquisition

master_kaos Re:Duh (222 comments)

Uh, $500 for a new video card does not make it obsolete in a year unless you were talking about a decade and a half ago. I bought a $250-$300 (560 TI)card early 2011. Early last year I had to change my graphics from Ultra to High (mainly due to upgrading to a 2560x1440 display) . This summer I had to lower it from high to medium, with the latest games coming out this fall I now am starting to get poor framerates even on medium so I will probably pick up another $250-300 card this christmas and should be good for the next 3.5 years.

Microsoft Releases Out-of-Band Security Patch For Windows

master_kaos Re:Better go kick WSUS into a sync... (176 comments)

Same here. I am the QA IT And development division. Every PC belongs to an employee. I don't have an isolated network. We only a 10 person company, but a lot of companies rely on us to have high uptime. I do the best I can do (creating images before updates, etc), but at the end of the day got to throw the dice and hope it doesn't end up snake eyes as it still takes time to recover..

What the US Can Learn From Canada's Internet Policy

master_kaos Re:holy spin (142 comments)

just depends on where you live.I live in a medium sized city and I probably have about a dozen choices. of course all of them boil down to using either rogers or bells last mile line but price is still way cheaper.

YouTube Opens Up 60fps To Everyone

master_kaos Re: Firefox better get their act together (152 comments)

oh shh, you will get a bunch of the naysayers saying "Firefox memory issues have been fine since verison x"
Even though no matter what system I am on fresh install or not, windows or mac, pretty much within 1-2 weeks the computer becomes unusable because firefox is open(and the only addon I have enables is adblock).. Kill task it and my computer is back to normal.
On this computer chrome has been open for about 2 months now with a normal amount of memory usage.

Why CurrentC Will Beat Out Apple Pay

master_kaos Re: Not a chance (631 comments)

that's funny, because my online account for my credit card shows pending transactions and preauths within minutes of completing the transaction, and is incorporated into the "available credit".

Microsoft's JavaScript Engine Gets Two-Tiered Compilation

master_kaos Re:Given that the mobile world has moved to apps.. (46 comments)

yeah I don't know what you are talking about. As I would say 99.9% of the internet ISN'T static web pages. I just did view source on this page, and 1/3 of the content is JS.

Microsoft's JavaScript Engine Gets Two-Tiered Compilation

master_kaos Re:That's great (46 comments)

maybe, but the unfortunate thing is real life doesn't work that way just because microsoft says so. We have customers still using XP (usually older people, or government employees) so unfortunately we have to still support ie6. So what we do is support our core apps for ie6 but any new features/new apps we only support ie9+

Apple Announces iPad Air 2, iPad mini 3, OS X Yosemite and More

master_kaos Re:iOS 8.1? Already? (355 comments)

well the release of ios 8.0.1 was a joke with the bugs, but 8.1 makes sense since the main reason for the release is to include apple pay (if it was just bug fixes would be 8.0.3)

If Your Cloud Vendor Goes Out of Business, Are You Ready?

master_kaos Re:AWS losing $2 billion a year? (150 comments)

yeah I would like to see that as well. I think if that is true, is because they are investing money into growing it instead of going for short term profits. They have added a lot over the last couple years.

If Your Cloud Vendor Goes Out of Business, Are You Ready?

master_kaos Re:What's the purpose. (150 comments)

scalable is the reason, also not having to manage your own hardware is also a bonus. We just don't have the time to run down to the colo office to replace a hard drive.
Our amazon bill is approx $180/month for about 6 servers (reserved pricing) no way we would be running hardware that cheap if we were doing it ourselves.

Password Security: Why the Horse Battery Staple Is Not Correct

master_kaos Re:symbols, caps, numbers (549 comments)

not only that, if you only visit the site once every 6 or 8 months or so, then you have to remember when you last used the site, and what was the phrase at that point in time (although this problem exists for any rotating password)

Pretty much the reason I use last pass, don't have to ever worry about it again.. yeah yeah 1 point of failure, whatever.

Password Security: Why the Horse Battery Staple Is Not Correct

master_kaos Re: symbols, caps, numbers (549 comments)

my one bank used to have a max password, and didn't allow any special characters either. Never understood why unless it was end up stored plain text in some mainframe fixed length field.

Ask Slashdot: Swift Or Objective-C As New iOS Developer's 1st Language?

master_kaos Re:Does Swift work on older iOS versions? (316 comments)

Oh yes I have been dealing with it, and it sucks, especially since we get 15% of the downloads compared to iOS. We dropped all applications from android except our flagship, and even then it is a couple versions behind our ios app, missing a ton of features.
Still develop for 2.1 and don't use any features that are newer than that

Simple Hack Enables VR Mode For Oculus Rift In Alien: Isolation

master_kaos The point? (57 comments)

SO if all it is is basically an ini hack, and it works flawlessly, what would be a reason that the developer would not have it enabled by default? (And I am assuming not to release DLC later since they left the code in the game)
If it was unstable, or sucked I could understand why.. but if they had it working I don't follow the logic.
