Solid State Drives Break the 50 Cents Per GiB Barrier, OCZ ARC 100 Launched

master_kaos Re:Not a barrier (183 comments)

Actually it is, and for exactly this. I made a decision that I wasn't going to buy an SSD until I could get a good one that was > 200GB at $0.5/gig just like this example. This was the price I was comfortable paying. I ended up getting a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB for exactly $125 (canadian) at staples.

What Do You Do When Your Mind-Numbing IT Job Should Be Automated?

master_kaos Re:Automate it (228 comments)

I guess it depends on the company. I work for a small company with just 2 developers. We have A LOT of processes automated. If we didn't we would only be doing 1/4 the amount of work we currently do. Yes you know what sometimes automation breaks but we fix it. Also any automation that is done that only saves 10 minutes per day the person that was originally in charge of that work still is required to know how to do it manually so that if it eventually breaks it won't effect them other than opening a ticket and doing the process manually.
We get p(raises) for our automation and how much we can churn out.

Idiot Leaves Driver's Seat In Self-Driving Infiniti, On the Highway

master_kaos Re:Huh? (406 comments)

Depends what the edge cases are.

Whats better, 9 minor accidents or only 1 serious accident?
Probably the 9 minor ones.

In my area they really been big on putting in roundabouts in the last 10 years or so at a bunch of intersections. Minor accidents have gone way up but major accidents have gone way way down, so overall it is a win.

Comcast Confessions

master_kaos Re:I wonder when... (234 comments)

omg this. I remember back in late 90s being called up at minimum, once a week by each of them major telcoms asking if I want to switch (or with the one I was on, trying to upsell). I used to ask them, so if you are harassing me before I am even your customer, what are you going to do when I am actually your customer? I knew multiple people who disconnected all of their phone lines and switched to VOIP/Cell phones just to get away from the constant harassment. Seemed to go on for a year or so then abrubtly stopped, must have been some law that passed or they got fined out of their rear end.

Ask Slashdot: Unattended Maintenance Windows?

master_kaos Re: Murphy says no. (265 comments)

yup same here, while my yearly salary isn't great I work 35 hour weeks, 4 weeks vacation, 10 sick days, multiple breaks per day, rarely ever any OT (and while we are salaried and don't get OT pay we instead get time in time and a half off). Hour-for-hour I probably make more than a lot of managers as well. Would I like to make double what I am making? Sure, but I would NOT be willing to put in double the work.

Bug In Fire TV Screensaver Tears Through 250 GB Data Cap

master_kaos Re:Seconding the TekSavvy recommendation (349 comments)

Ah, didn't realize teksavvy is canada wide now. While I originally found their customer service was excellent, I left because it was piss poor. They were growing too big too fast, and had wait times on the phone that were 30min+, and were constantly overselling neighborhoods. I am sure it is better now as they figured out the logistics. I have personally referred 8 people to teksavvy, and now have referred them to Start and they been happy each time with the change.
Start.ca I find amazing, everytime I have called them a human picked up the phone within 2 rings, zero hold times.. I am sure as they get bigger they will end up like teksavvy though with the crazy wait times, but for now it is like how teksavvy used to be when they were small.

master_kaos Re:It's 2014 (349 comments)

Where you located? If in Ontario, check out teksavvy or start.ca. Also check out your provider, a lot of them recently have been offering unlimited for an extra $10-30 a month depending if you have stuff bundled with them or not.

Samsung Release First SSD With 3D NAND

master_kaos Re:USD/GB? (85 comments)

And how exactly is this cheaper? This is already regular price for all other manufacturers.. But the article specifically states "Samsung to lower manufacturer costs with more usable die per wafer". I guess if it actually comes with a 10 year warranty that is worth a bit.

Microsoft Suspending "Patch Tuesday" Emails

master_kaos Re:Canada's new anti-spam act? (145 comments)

What's funny is I still haven't got emails from Futureshop/Bestbuy yet. Considering the amount they spam I am not sure what they are going to do. If I even get one email from them on or after July 1, I will be reporting them.

Microsoft Suspending "Patch Tuesday" Emails

master_kaos Re:It looks like a response to anti spam laws (145 comments)

Now I don't know Microsoft patch emails contain, but from the sound of it, It doesn't seem like it would be effected by canadas new anti spam as it is only for emails that are advertising a product/service for money.

Workaholism In America Is Hurting the Economy

master_kaos Re:work life balance is a myth (710 comments)

man I keep hearing stories like this and makes me depressed if I will ever need to find a new job... which unfortunately may be soon. Currently work 7-8 hour days and that includes 1 hour lunch and multiple breaks. Our boss has the philousophy I don't count hours as long as the job gets done. For a lot of people this may sound bad, but for us it works both ways. If work is a bit slow we can leave early, but if something is urgent we need to stay around to fix it. More often than not we leave 30-45 min early. Maybe once a month may have to stay hour late. I also get 4 weeks vacation, and minimum raise every year of double inflation (but often even more than that).
Unfortunately our boss doesn't have much of a succession plan and he is 70 years old... Multiple employees pitched buying company from him but he always turns it down

NADA Is Terrified of Tesla

master_kaos Re:We should have a choice (455 comments)

80% of needs you probably still shouldn't buy a tesla unless you have a 2nd vehicle. 80% means 73 days of the year you need another vehicle. I imagine it would need to suit 99%+ of the time to make it work. That gives you 3-4 days a year you need another vehicle... which renting is perfectly suitable. Thing is I need a truck 1% of the time, but I don't own one I'll borrow my dads or rent one.
