Debian 7.0 ("Wheezy") Released

masternerdguy Re:Why Debian? (191 comments)

Debian places a strong emphasis on stability compared to most distros. Instead of being on the bleeding edge they are conservative and try to provide a stable, bug free, and secure system which is well tested and well understood. Debian also has an extremely strong stance of software freedom, which appeals to some people. Debian is a solid enough distribution that plenty of other distros use it as a base, that should say something about the quality of the work they do. Without Debian there'd be no Ubuntu or Linux Mint since they both pull packages from the unstable (read: under testing / "current" ) Debian repos.

Avoiding RTS stories (most are bad) is as easy as multiplayer and skirmish.

EA Building Microtransactions Into All of Its Future Games

masternerdguy Re:It works in eve (303 comments)

No it fucking doesn't work in EVE Online. I also control the character 'masternerdguy' who is an EVE veteran and let me tell you that PLEX (an in-game item that represents 30 days of game time) seriously damaged that game. First of all PLEX exists to try and reduce RMT (and by reduce I mean move the profits to CCP). For those who don't understand the system, a PLEX is bought for about $20 a unit (or less if you buy in bulk) and is traded for in-game currency, ISK, on the free market. So if I wanted to sell a PLEX I'd pay my money, get a PLEX, and sell it in Jita for about 500 million ISK, assuming that another player wants to buy it from me. While it is true that PLEX is a zero sum game (no ISK is created, it only changes hands to a willing buyer. The buyer wants a PLEX because they can pay their subscription with it using ISK) the system results in bizzare wealth distribution. You get 30 day old players flying 10b ISK officer bit Vindicators ( which die hilariously and are made fun of on themittani.com ) because they have a big credit card. PLEX isn't pay to win, but it does allow you to buy things you shouldn't be able to afford yet. You shouldn't even consider stepping into a Vindicator for 6 months after you start a character.

'Old School' Hackers Attack European Governments Using 'MiniDuke' Malware

masternerdguy emailed pdf, say it ain't so! (48 comments)

"The computers were corrupted through an Adobe PDF attachment to an email." -- It never ends! Why is this still an attack vector? This could have been totally avoided with a little user education and decent network security policy.

Ask Slashdot: Can Quickoffice On Chromebooks Topple Microsoft's Office?

masternerdguy yes (242 comments)

Yes, everyone's always wanted to pay $1000+ for a computer that they don't own that has worse specs than one half the price.

LG Not Working On Windows Phone 8 Devices

masternerdguy Re:I like Windows Phone (123 comments)

You're using the metro interface on the intended device, of course it works. Most people's issues with Windows 8 have nothing to do with the mobile market, it's the desktop.

LG Not Working On Windows Phone 8 Devices

masternerdguy Re:Shotgun approach (123 comments)

I don't want to go back to Palm, Firefox OS doesn't exist yet (they've yet to ship a product), so that leaves Android (which is a great choice because of the well developed ecosystem and ease of deployment). But you forgot about WebOS which is being sold off and is already fully developed by HP, and you forgot Chrome which is looking for someone to care about it.

British Farmers Growing Their Own Internet Service

masternerdguy Re:They better be careful (178 comments)

Monsanto only goes after farmers who knowingly grew their seeds, and they determine that because the pesticide monanto's "roundup ready" seeds are engineered to be resistant to kills regular plants. You'd never apply it to your crop unless you either wanted to kill it or you knew it was the resistant strain. Do the research.

A School in the Cloud

masternerdguy Re:lol (126 comments)

Last I checked lots of countries now require a minimum state approved education paid for by tax money. That's much better than only educating the aristocracy and putting all the peasant children to work.

Gooseberry Launches Android-based Raspberry Pi Rival

masternerdguy masternerdguy writes  |  more than 2 years ago

masternerdguy writes "

The manufacturer claims that the Gooseberry is "roughly 3 x more powerful in processing power", and twice the RAM (512 MB) than the Raspberry Pi. The Gooseberry does not come with analog video and lacks a LAN port, but supports Wi-Fi. At this time, the board only supports Android 4 ICS and Ubuntu without graphics acceleration. However, Gooseberry is offering premade images for Ubuntu. Support for Arch Linux is "expected in the future".
