mc10 Re:Interesting... (153 comments)

It's been long known that Facebook does this, after the EU required that Facebook must send DVDs to users requesting info about their accounts.

Ask Slashdot: What Can You Do About SOPA and PIPA?

mc10 Re:Spread the word (1002 comments)

Unfortunately, there are too many people that still do not understand what SOPA/PIPA are about, and simply complain about the loss of Wikipedia. See, for instance, #herpderpedia, listing reactions by many clueless teens. It's disappointing how none of them spend the time to actually read the notice. Washington Post has an interesting article about the Wikipedia blackout.

How a Gesture Could Get Your Google+ Profile Picture Yanked

mc10 Re:Other Offenses (262 comments)

I'm offended at Google's immaturity. Minors aren't allowed to have a G+ account, right? Then what's the problem with someone flipping the bird?

Jesus, Google, grow the fuck up.

Unfortunately, it's quite simple to bypass the 18+ rule during registration. Google still has the same issue.

Wikipedia To Dump GoDaddy Over SOPA

mc10 Re:What does a $10 registration mean? (197 comments)

I think what is really needed is to get all the big name companies together and sponsor research into an alternative to DNS that can't be touched by any government and you can't sue for trademark infringement.

And, of course, Congress passes another stupid law like SOPA making that illegal as well. Good luck having technology be uncensored by the government.

Wikipedia To Dump GoDaddy Over SOPA

mc10 Re:Name.com (197 comments)

Oh, and of course, they're against SOPA; they've written an entire article about SOPA. From the previous article:

Name.com opposes SOPA and calls on Congress to search for a new way to protect intellectual property rights, while maintaining the freedom from which we all enjoy and benefit.

mc10 (2402526) writes "Google is asking its users to take action to support a "free and open web", before the meeting of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) begins on December 3. From the company's Google+ post: "Some governments want to use this meeting in Dubai to increase censorship and regulate the Internet. ... A free and open world depends on a free and open Internet.""

Twitter Survives Election after Ruby-to-Java Move

mc10 mc10 writes  |  about 2 years ago

mc10 (2402526) writes "As the results of the 2012 US Presidential election were being announced Tuesday night, Twitter experienced record traffic to its website, but the service never faltered despite the increased load – something Twitter engineers credit to the company's move from Ruby to Java for its backend software. Unlike in the past, Twitter did not experience service outages, even as the website generated 874,560 posts in a single minute at its peak in traffic."

Why Google Went Offline Today and a Bit about How the Internet Works

mc10 mc10 writes  |  about 2 years ago

mc10 (2402526) writes "Google went temporarily offline for about 27 minutes at around 6:24pm PST / 02:24 UTC (5 Nov. 2012 PST / 6 Nov. 2012 UTC), when CloudFlare realized that Google's services went offline. CloudFlare explains how the Internet is glued together by the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), and how Moratel, an Indonesian ISP, was announcing a network that wasn't actually behind them."

Ex-Google employee says Google+ has ruined the company

mc10 mc10 writes  |  more than 2 years ago

mc10 (2402526) writes "Ex-Google employee James Whittaker, now returning to Microsoft, left a scathing post on a Microsoft blog about why he left Google.

Writes Whittaker, "The Google I was passionate about was a technology company that empowered its employees to innovate. The Google I left was an advertising company with a single corporate-mandated focus." He believes that the 20% spirit, meaning that Google employees spent 20% of their time working on non-work-related projects, has been damaged after Larry Page became Google CEO and decided to focus on Google+.

Interestingly, Whittaker is not alone in his opinions. Several high-level employees have also left after complaining that the "start-up spirit" of Google has been replaced by a more mature but staid culture focused on the bottom line."

Megaupload shut down with charges of piracy

mc10 mc10 writes  |  more than 2 years ago

mc10 (2402526) writes "Federal prosecutors in Virginia say they have shut down one of the world’s largest Internet file-sharing sites, Megaupload.com, and charged its founder and others with violating piracy laws. This comes after a New York grand jury indicted Megaupload Limited and Vestor Limited on Jan. 5 for copyright infringement.

Megaupload.com has claimed it is diligent in responding to complaints about pirated material."
