China Looks To Linux As Windows Alternative

michrech Re:Good. (222 comments)

Unless, of course, you wish to play games that are Windows only (and don't want to suffer through making Wine work, and then hoping your game actually functions properly in Wine)...

Fix that issue, and you'll start to see more Linux converts.

I've had Linux as my primary desktop for over 10 years now. It can be done.

I just jumped into playing with pfsense. It's based on FreeBSD, but it was very easy for me to get in and mess around with. :)

Microsoft Confirms Windows 8.1 Spring Update, To Focus On Non-touch Devices

michrech Re: too late, Microsoft (172 comments)

The sales clerks were busy trying to keep up with the people buying Windows laptops.

... and that's why Apple is the world's largest technology company taking in 37.5B per year, with a market cap greater than any other publicly traded company on earth, and Microsoft is fading fast.

It's unfortunate that Apple won't release numbers broken down by product, but it is my belief that the majority of that 37.5B is for portable devices, with their computer side being a fraction of that (probably a healthy fraction, but a fraction none-the-less).

Microsoft Confirms Windows 8.1 Spring Update, To Focus On Non-touch Devices

michrech Re:It's simple: provide a choice (172 comments)

You put a gigantic switch in the Control Panel somewhere: "Enable touchscreen UI (recommended for tablet use) / Disable touchscreen UI (recommended for desktop use)".

This is probably something that is going to happen soon. It's bound to.

It's something that *should have been there from the Start*.

Windows 8 Metro: The Good Kind of Market Segmentation?

michrech Re:Non sequitur. Your facts are uncoordinated. (389 comments)

My experience mirrors yours. I've had gift cards, thank you cards, and other notes shoved under my office door for pointing people to StartMenu8 ever since Windows 8 became available. Some people like the UI, but MANY seem to loathe it (as I do)...

Ohio Attempting To Stop Tesla From Selling Cars, Again

michrech Question : (387 comments)

Couldn't Tesla create a company that exists only to sell their cars, similar to how large businesses create a "property" company to "own" the buildings/land they're in, and then the parent pays the "property" company to lease the land to get around such stupid legislation?

IBM's PC Junior Turns 30, Too

michrech Re:Not as bad as the reviews made it seem (178 comments)

I never ran into software compatibility problems with my 1000 (for non-game software), but it sucked that Tandy essentially put an EGA adapter in it, but then modified it enough that EGA software wouldn't work with it.. :(

Detroit Wants Its Own High-Tech Visa

michrech Re: The real point of what Detroit has to offer... (398 comments)

I'd make the argument that you can, at least in part... If the Republicans could put forth a/some candidate(s) that weren't so damned extreme, they might have had a chance at providing a counter-balance to the Democrats that have allegedly managed to run Detroit into the ground...

Ask Slashdot: Suggestions For a Simple Media Server?

michrech Re:Awesome thread (420 comments)

I've seen several comments for Plex and XMBC, both of which don't require one to "break out a circuit board and build their own solution." In the case of Plex, you don't have to 'break out a keyboard every time they want to watch a movie," either. In the case of Android, WP8, and IOS there are apps that can be downloaded that will act as a remote for the Plex Home Theater (which would be installed on a PC connected to your TV). Not everyone may want to sit down and use their phone/tablet to start a movie, but I don't see it as being too different from using a normal TV/media player remote...

Ask Slashdot: Suggestions For a Simple Media Server?

I wouldn't suggest ps3mediaserver for one reason -- the various .nzb sites I use are filled with comments of ps3mediaserver users having one problem or another with playback of the .mkv's they're downloading...

Ask Slashdot: Suggestions For a Simple Media Server?

michrech Re:DLNA (420 comments)

It's interesting that you're so negative toward Plex and XBMC. My brother and a friend of his use XBMC with zero issues (even their wives, who aren't terribly computer literate, have no problems using it), and they've not run into any media it won't play. I have similar experience with Plex (and have been trying to get them to convert).

In my case, I've only thrown .mkv files at Plex, since that's the container all the pirates seem to use for movies (I have no idea why, and I've not bothered to look into it). I've never had issues with playback on my HTPC (which has Plex Home Theater), my phone and tablet, both of which have the Android Plex app, or to my work PC via the Plex Media Server web interface. It even supports subtitles, if their built into the file (I've never tried downloading/adding them manually, so I don't know 1) if it works and 2) how difficult a process it is).

What kind of problems have you had with Plex (don't worry -- beyond being a user, I'm not affiliated with the company -- I'm just curious)?

Incandescent Bulbs Get a Reprieve

michrech Re:Good. Attics & closets waste $30 bulbs. Dim (767 comments)

That's good to hear. Each attic or rarely used closet doesn't need a $30 light bulb when a 30 cent light bulb will do just fine.
Using CFLs in such roles wastes 95% of the resources used to make them.

OR, it's an excellent use of them. Since they're used so rarely, it should be *years and years* before they need to be replaced... Also, a CFL or LED bulb for a closet or attic would cost less than half of your ridiculous statement of $30... Hell, the currently available Cree 60w 2700k bulbs for $10 at Home Depot would be fine for both cases, and CFL's are available for a few bucks (or less)...

Also my ceiling fans have built in dimmers. Other than the one fan/light we use often, it would be stupid and wasteful to throw out all our ceiling
fans and buy entire new ones just to have a CFL capable dimmer.

Dimmable CFL and LED bulbs exist -- my house has multiple of both, and they're the same price (or within a few dollars) of their non-dimmable counterparts.
