Emulation Arrives On the PS3

miggyb Re:Give Us Back Linux (169 comments)

Well, why not sell a PS3 Lite with all the nonstandard stuff disabled that's cheaper and a PS3 Developer that is more expensive but not locked down?

Halo Reach Leaked To Filesharing Sites

miggyb Re:Long end of the stick. (160 comments)

Clearly we now need copyright to extend backwards into the past, before the work is completely finished. Otherwise, how are artists like Da Vinci supposed to protect unfinished works like the Mona Lisa?

The Recovery Disc Rip-Off

miggyb Re:HP Does this ... (551 comments)

Are you sure? All the laptops that I've dealt with will happily let you use up DVDs if the process keeps failing. I think there's a limit of one *successful* burn, but not one burn in general.

Study Finds 0.3% of BitTorrent Files Definitely Legal

miggyb Re:Boo hoo hoo. (321 comments)

It's the principle of the thing. If they complained when we made one copy in shoddy quality for a personal friend that we had to sneakernet over to their house, there is no hope for even trying to reason with them now that we can create perfect digital copies and share them en masse. Their "happy medium" is pay full price, every time, no refunds.

The Creativity Crisis

miggyb Re:Thank God for standardized testing (571 comments)

I'm glad to hear that you're perfect, but don't you think it would be better if the school also had goals of increasing creativity in mind?

Colleges Stepping Up Anti-Cheating Technology

miggyb Re:It's better to have students that don't cheat (439 comments)

I bet you read through EULAs all the way through too, right? It's pointless to have that signature. I've considered what they would do to me if I just refused to sign it. Clearly that wouldn't be evidence enough that I had cheated or helped someone cheat, and even if it did they wouldn't be able to reprimand me since I didn't sign it. And if they can reprimand me for cheating without signing the honor code, then why do they have me sign it in the first place?

NASA Should Focus On Going To..

miggyb Re:NASA is not efficient (508 comments)

Why don't we just crash Venus into Mars? That way, we can solve the atmosphere, gravity and temperature problems all in one swift blow.

NASA Should Focus On Going To..

miggyb Re:"Earth orbit is getting outsourced" (508 comments)

Yes, also, if you give tax breaks to the rich, they'll spend it all and help out the lower ranks of the economy. Not only does this idea look great on paper, it's also really easy to implement, since it's the rich of the country that have the most time/resources to lobby the government.

Unusual, Obscure, and Useful Linux Distros

miggyb Re:The most useful distro is... (221 comments)

Really? You think putting a Linux distro on a USB stick is easier than burning a CD? There's a lot of good reasons for putting Linux on a USB stick, but convenience of setup is not and will never be one of them.

ICANN Likely Finally To Approve .xxx For Porn Sites

miggyb Re:because .xxx is nothing like .sex (266 comments)

Clearly, sex and porn is a natural curiosity that all people go through during puberty. That being said, however, there's a huge difference between sex and online pornography, namely one is natural and one is artificial. While I wouldn't necessarily worry if I caught my 12 year old son masturbating, I don't think I (or society) would react well to finding out he has a bondage-preggo-Voltaire's-angry-glove fetish at that age.

SanDisk WORM SD Card Can Store Data For 100 Years

miggyb Re:100 years sounds good... (267 comments)

I don't know. On the other hand, the industry has gotten a lot better at reusing connections and being backwards-compatible. USB 3.0 is backwards compatible with USB 1.1, I believe. Serially attached SCSI uses the same connection as SATA. We haven't moved beyond 24 pin motherboard power connectors for ages. The new SDXC standard still accepts regular SD cards. The examples go on and on.

Study Finds Google Is More Trusted Than Traditional Media

I wouldn't trust Slashdot with the stolen handbags and cars that I stole because I got introduced to peer-to-peer filesharing at a very early age.

HP and Yahoo To Spam Your Printer

miggyb Re:The first planned spam... (397 comments)

Samsung Laser hater here. Spent all of yesterday trying to set up a CLP-315W on wireless and following their directions failed since my printer, which could see my neighbor's SSIDs but not my own, did not have "wireless capabilities."

Gave up and had to call tech support to find out I had to set it up on ethernet first, put all the wireless info in (manually), disconnect the ethernet, wait 5 minutes for it to realize what happened, then FINALLY have it work. Needless to say, I won't be buying samsung again.
