Ask Slashdot: Best File System For Web Hosting?

mikeken Whatever is the best with the given OS (210 comments)

Typically, that is the default file system. That is how you will get the best support when there is an issue. It will also be the most stable with your OS because the developers focus on that FS. So personally, I would use whatever is the default FS for whatever OS you decide to use. To get off topic a bit, IMHO that OS should be Debian because it is just too awesome and Debian based OS's have the largest community. Also, it should be running on Linode.com ;)

Ask Slashdot: Which Virtual Machine Software For a Beginner?

mikeken Re:VMWare is the only real option (361 comments)

Although I agree that Xen is a "no. Just no." for a beginner, you seem to have an attitude against it in a corporate/commercial world? Right from their website, "The Xen Hypervisor has a user base in the millions, that include cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services, Rackspace Hosting, Linode". I use ESXi as well on an almost daily basis, but you seem to have drank the VMWare kool-aid. That or you are SUPER vendor locked in and so you've given up.

EFF Wants Ubuntu To Disable Online Search By Default

mikeken Re:Hmmm (124 comments)

Right, and I understand that. I'm just saying that Ubuntu is trying to target the everyday user, I don't know if it is successful or not.

EFF Wants Ubuntu To Disable Online Search By Default

mikeken Re:Hmmm (124 comments)

"...but I would expect most Linux users to know that and make an informed decision." Typically true, but it should make a difference that Ubuntu isn't targeting the average Linux user (IMHO). They are targeting everyday users as well by trying to make their interface as easy to use as possible.

EFF Wants Ubuntu To Disable Online Search By Default

mikeken Honestly (124 comments)

This is how it should have been in the first place. As a user of Ubuntu when I do decide to install 12.10 I would like to be greeted with the option to opt-in rather than having the ability to "opt-out" by changing settings after the install. Personally, I will opt-in just to be able to support Ubuntu in even the smallest way.

Are you better off than you were four years ago?

mikeken /. is a tech website (524 comments)

Obviously, the technology and related job market is growing and will be for some time. With /. consisting of mostly technical people, I would say it would make sense that the majority of us are better off. Just ONE example is we now have opportunities to make $250,000+ a year programming iOS apps for another firm (read as in not inventing your own app and being self-employed.) My 2 cents.

Ask Slashdot: A Cheap, DIY Home Security and Surveillance System?

mikeken Seriously!? (508 comments)

Get a camera+dvr kit from any super club store (Costco, Sam's Club) or online at any large tech selling company (Tigerdirect.com). Seriously, ~$500 will probably get you 8 cameras that can be set to motion activated recording. Your welcome.

Paul Ceglia Fined $5,000 In Facebook Case

mikeken Re:Wow... (46 comments)

Ha nice scene to lead us all too. But I just wanted to chime in and say that swordfish was much more "awesomer". It was cool because if you recall from Swordfish the huge monitor array setup, it must have been like 10 monitors were all SGI brand 17 inch LCD screens. At the time, I was working for an SGI refurbishing company and I was using those monitors every day. It makes the movie that much more personal and "awesomer".

Utah To Teach USA is a Republic, Not a Democracy

mikeken Re:Wasn't long (1277 comments)

I don't exactly understand what you're saying but, the exponential growth of the U.S. Government IS because of spending ourselves into debt. Now, it is beginning to bite us in the ass.

Utah To Teach USA is a Republic, Not a Democracy

mikeken Re:The issue at hand (1277 comments)

Idk, I think their would be a lot of laws passed; However, they would be constantly changing. Mob rule would be fun to watch, as long as it wasn't my country.

Operating Systems Project

mikeken mikeken writes  |  more than 2 years ago

mikeken (907710) writes "This spring I need to come up with a project for an undergraduate computer science class at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. The class has been about introducing us to operating system programming (we use Ubuntu for this). The project needs to have something to do with C programming that uses system/hardware calls. Essentially, the only requirement is that I am doing something to interact with hardware. I was thinking that doing something with the CUDA Toolkit (http://developer.nvidia.com/cuda-toolkit-40) would be fun. So, my grand question is what are some fun project ideas that can be completed in 2-3 weeks? As a side note, ultimately my project needs to be fairly unique so I will likely be concocting a combination of you fellow readers ideas and maybe adding a hint of my own imagination."

Outlook Shared Contacts List for a CRM, Bad Idea R

mikeken mikeken writes  |  more than 2 years ago

mikeken (907710) writes "I'm the sole "IT multitasker" for a small business in St. Paul. Currently, we use a relatively expensive CRM which integrates with our ERP to provide the sales employees with sales history. The problem with this is that the CRM is made to sit on our in-house servers and can only be accessed when someone is sitting at a desktop connected to our domain. Asking the sales people who are located throughout the country to use remote desktop is asking too much. After all it's the 21st century and things should be easier. Over holiday breaks, when the offices are closed, sales people occasionally need to get access to information in the CRM. During thanksgiving my boss decided he had enough and wants me to create a shared contacts list for outlook/exchange to replace our current CRM. My gut instinct is that this is a bad idea. Right? I would like to see what everyone's opinions and ideas are about this, as well as any known complications this may cause. Do I need to redirect my boss to a solution such as that at http://salesforce.com?"

People Divided Over Release of Osamas Body

mikeken mikeken writes  |  more than 3 years ago

mikeken writes "Seriously, release the pictures. I understand that there could be passionate retaliations in response to the pictures, but this is America. We do not cower. The pictures need to be released to settle at least some of the conspiracies cooking up already and to bring easement to those affected by 9/11 that want to see them, among other reasons as well."
