Report: Microsoft To Buy Minecraft Studio For $2bn+

miller701 This is fun .. (368 comments)

I saw this headline last night and my son (Minecraft fan). He said "Wow, so Google is buying Minecraft?"
"No, not Google, Microsoft"
"Well, who are they?"

We've been an Apple/Mac house since before he was born, so I guess I'm going to have to put in terms he'll understand

Radioactive Wild Boars Still Roaming the Forests of Germany

miller701 Prevailing winds? (212 comments)

Wouldn't the prevailing winds (west to east as far as I know) in Saxony have inhibited the drift of radiation from Chernobyl? Dresden for example is over 700 miles East of Chernobyl.

GM Names and Fires Engineers Involved In Faulty Ignition Switch

miller701 Re:My favorite part... (307 comments)

This has been my viewpoint, it (defects/#cars sold) must be staggeringly low. That said, I would guess there must also be a lot of non-reported incidents too. Hopefully, big corporations have statisticians/data mining to look into that sort of thing.

When I heard I heard the engineer/designer changed the device without changing the part number (part#12253-1, part#12253a, etc), I said to myself that it's very unlikely the non-changing part number was mandated from above. It sounds like someone covering his/her butt.

Some Users Find Swype Keyboard App Makes 4000+ Location Requests Per Day

miller701 Bad Design? (191 comments)

Why doesn't the OS keep track it it's moving of not (all those wonderful sensors) and then have the app ask the OS for the location? If it's sitting on my desk, it shouldn't need to check it's location every 24 seconds.

Why Darmok Is a Good Star Trek: TNG Episode

I think you're missing a big point. In Darmok their language doesn't even have a concept for "You" or "are"

Wal-Mart Sues Visa For $5 Billion For Rigging Card Swipe Fees

miller701 Re: Walmart employees, rejoice! (455 comments)

That's not necessarily the case. To cite one example, our Walmart has the same brand of locally made frozen pizzas the other local supermarkets have. the Target by me doesn't, but it's a smaller Target.

Can Science Ever Be "Settled?"

miller701 Re:Evolution (497 comments)

You make an excellent point. Giraffes also have the same type of selection pressures. People assumed that giraffes had long necks because it allows them to reach higher leaves. There's some truth to that but it's also true that male giraffes compete by pushing each other with their necks.

Anyone seeing a giraffe eat would make the first assumption, only someone seeing male giraffes during rut would notice the second.

Unlike the peacock, the long or thick neck may not hamper a male giraffe's viability
