Ask Slashdot: Unity/Gnome 3/Win8/iOS — Do We Really Hate All New GUIs?

motang We are set in our ways (1040 comments)

Honestly geeks are set in their ways. I am liking Unity because I had a similar setup with Dock on the left and one bar at the top, so it feels like a spiritual successor to my setup pre-Unity. On that note I am fan of Gnome Shell as I feel claustrophobic when I use it.

Opera Releases a new version for Linux

motang motang writes  |  about 4 months ago

motang (1266566) writes "Opera released Opera 24 for Linux. Currently it is in testing (developer) mode, and only for 64bit Ubuntu, but hey it's a start since everyone thought Linux support was abandoned.

In my test it is pretty rough around the edges, only has ambiance theme as it has been hard coded, and all the window controls are on the right and not on the left like what Unity has. But it is a start."

Linux New Media Launches Ubuntu User Magazine

motang motang writes  |  more than 5 years ago

motang writes "FTA:

"Canonical's popular Ubuntu operating system continues to win followers around the world, and Ubuntu User is the first print magazine specifically for this rapidly growing audience. "Ubuntu is popular with software developers and IT professionals, but it is also a hit with hobbyists and other desktop users who are looking for an alternative to Microsoft Windows and don't want the restrictive hardware policies of Apple," says Joe Casad, Editor in Chief of Ubuntu User."

Me being a huge Ubuntu fan boy, am really digging this. For something like this to happen, it means that Ubuntu has really gained popularity (well we all know that) but for it spawn it's own dedicated magazine is something amazing)."

Apple close to unveiling guarded Snow Leopard UI

motang motang writes  |  more than 5 years ago

motang (1266566) writes "Appleinsider has an article stating that Apple is set to show off a new UI in the upcoming Snow Leopard. I think it looks a wee-bit like Vista. From the article:

Among the changes under consideration for the new build is a striking overhaul to the Mac OS X user interface, which is expected to surrender its platinum theme. Apple has reportedly been working on this new interface since day one, despite public claims that Snow Leopard would forgo forward-facing improvements for a focus strictly on under-the-hood enhancements.

Form the article:

You should also note that almost all of the newest hardware coming out has Linux support. The critical mass has been reached. Go download Ubuntu 8.10 and see for yourself what the fuss is about. You won't regret it.

Google Andriod as a desktop OS?

motang motang writes  |  more than 5 years ago

motang writes "A small startup duo got Google Android running on a Asus EeePC. From the article: "about four hours of work to compile Android for the netbook. Having done so, we (Daniel Hartmann, that is) got the netbook fully up and running on it, with nearly all of the necessary hardware you'd want (including graphics, sound and the wireless card for internet) running." Now this is very interesting and looks like my assumptions of Google were right they are tippy toeing into the OS market and it seems I am not the only one as Mr. Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols, seems to believe that as well."

Next generation C++ "goes beta"

motang motang writes  |  more than 5 years ago

motang writes "C++ is old when compared to the likes of Java and C#, but that doesn't mean it's not functional and that it is not used. But this hasn't stopped C++ from advancing and a new beta is planned for 2010. C++0x is the new planned new standard and this article has some detail on it. C++0x seems to have some improvements and I quote:

the inclusion of user defined literals, simplified Python-like loops, library thread safety and "concepts", an improved form of generics. C++ first became an international standard in 1998, and C++0X plans for almost complete backwards compatibility.
