White House Responds To Net Neutrality Petition

mrcoolbp Re:Petition to Stop Wasting Tax Money on Petitions (245 comments)

True, and well-worded, but I think it's a bunch of handwaving. If he truly believed in an open internet, he'd do something about this more than just saying: "I'm gonna let them handle it"

Wow, didn't think it would happen but it looks like they may have actually saved themselves a ton of money without too much inconvenience. This seems like a good thing.

Experience the New Slashdot Mobile Site

mrcoolbp Re:Needs work (384 comments)

I have this same problem, I browse from a feed, so I'm alway trying to load an articles page. I can't see the specific article because I keep getting dumped back to the http://m.slashdot.org/ page instead of the m.slashdot.org/articleURL page. VERY frustrating.

How the Internet Makes the Improbable Into the New Normal

mrcoolbp Re:fueling paranoia (191 comments)

This is essentially the same phenomenon that TV news has been performing, and which has convinced many people that there is an epidemic of child abductions and other violent crime in our society. (And there is not.) The improbable events of 7 billions lives are being condensed into our individual (vicarious) experience – but with the average person being unable to instinctively grasp that vast context – and we're losing our sense of perspective. Little wonder that people are locking themselves and their children inside gated, armed enclaves.

This coincides eerily with the lyrics from "Vicarious" by TooL:

"Eye on the TV, 'cause tragedy thrills me,
Whatever flavor it happens to be...
...Vicariously I,
Live while the whole world dies,
You all need it too, don't lie."
(Also: "Much better you then I")

Another similar crowd-sourced legislation that shows a lot of promise is: http://www.youlaws.org/ They cover all policy, not just internet policy. They are currently looking for paid developers (python I believe).

Homeless Student Is Intel Talent Search Semifinalist

mrcoolbp Re:How is this even... (464 comments)

America (I'm addressing you as a whole).

How is it that you allow young people, let alone whole families, to be homeless, to live in "shelters".

WTF is wrong with you people?!

You are supposedly the most powerful nation on earth, the wealthiest, the nation that is spoken to exude opportunity and success from every pore.

And you have whole families, school children, living in homeless shelters.

I don't care how they came to be in the situation, it doesn't matter how that happened, what matters is resolving it, providing the social, housing, and financial support to ensure that every body can call somewhere home.

For every one remarkable individual like this who manages to overcome the adversity, I hate to think how many are dragged down by the circumstance.

I'm confused by your comment sir; that is why we have homeless shelters (housing for people without houses, which the above family seem to be utilising) soup kitchens, food pantries, subsidized housing, halfway houses, and countless other social programs. Not saying "America, F YAH!" or anything but your (seemingly rhetorical) questions appear to have no merit.
