Supreme Court: Affordable Care Act Is Constitutional

nikomen Re:Douche bag and turd sandwich (2416 comments)

It doesn't look like the 2-party system will go away anytime soon. What do we do then? Leave the United States? Start our own country? Too many lemmings and corporations that consistently vote for and/or buy the candidates in one of the two parties. I agree. Burn the system to the ground (figuratively speaking).

Verizon Backtracks On $2 Convenience Fee

nikomen Re:Like GoDaddy (281 comments)

The problem with boycotting Verizon is that there are few other (decent) options available. :-( With GoDady, however, there are many other choices.

Verizon Backtracks On $2 Convenience Fee

nikomen Similarities? (281 comments)

This may be slightly off-topic, but don't some Satellite/Cable companies do similar things? I seem to recall a particular provider charging $5/month if you didn't sign up for auto-pay and/or paperless billing. The reason was that they wanted to save trees. However, the same nameless provider would send mailers at least a couple times a month if you canceled their service, thereby negating the the "tree savings." Seems like Verizon and other companies are just trying to make another buck by taking advantage of their customer once they've been locked into a contract.

nikomen Screwed up Patent System (314 comments)

Just another reason why our patent system needs to be changed. And another reason I don't know who to vote for these days. It seems that all politicians (or most) support the current patent system or don't care to do anything about it. I mean, how can you patent touching a phone number on a screen? That isn't even close to an invention. Absurdity.

nikomen Broadband as a Utility (250 comments)

The more and more these internet providers try to screw their customers, whether purposefully or inadvertently, the more we move to making broadband a public utility. If companies can't act responsibly, the only other option, in this semi-monopoly, is to get the feds involved.

Richard Stallman: Cell Phones Are 'Stalin's Dream'

nikomen Some developers have families to feed (792 comments)

Some of us who do software development have families to feed. All software can't be free. Not all developers can be paid to do open source development and research at MIT. I support open source, but open source isn't the savior of humanity to bring world peace. Free software is like some FSM for RMS. He practically worships it.

The Case of Apple's Mystery Screw

nikomen Don't buy Apple? (845 comments)

Just another reason to buy an Android phone and not an iPhone. Maybe I'll buy a PC laptop instead of that MacBook Pro I was thinking of buying in case they decide to pull crap like this on their other lines of products.

Wikileaks To Name Swiss Bank Tax Evaders

nikomen Re:Hit them back (783 comments)

The highest is in so-called "nanny states" BTW.

Could you cite your source? I'm not saying you're right or wrong, I would just like to see a source if there is one. Maybe I need to move to a new state if it's true. Would this only apply to those who came from a lower-class family, or would it also apply to those from middle-class families working to move to the upper-middle class?

A History of Wiretapping

nikomen A Necessary Evil? (128 comments)

As much as I loathe the fact that the previous administration abused wiretapping, maybe it's a necessary evil? I don't know all of the history of wiretapping, but I imagine that the FBI and other law enforcement agencies used it to capture dangerous criminals in the past and are currently doing it in the present. As long as a warrant is obtained, I don't see why it would be illegal. Of course there will be abuse, but don't throw out a tool simply because it can be abused. Many things in life can be abused. Does that warrant their expulsion from society? Alcohol is abused, but should it be done away with? Probably a stretch of an analogy, but it works. Law enforcement, however, should not be allowed to wiretap without a warrant. Fighting terrorism, whether foreign against foreign or domestic, should not be an excuse for illegal wiretaps.

Senator Diane Feinstein Trying to Kill Net Neutrality

nikomen Re:I didn't know Feinstein was a Republican.... (873 comments)

Maybe that has something to do with the fact that more phone calls coming into the White House say don't support the stimulus package than ones that say support it...something like a ratio of 100:1. Yet all of the senate democrats and Barack Obama support it?

ESPN's Play To Make ISPs Pay

nikomen Re:Its bad enough on Cable... (355 comments)

Its bad enough that I have to pay the freaking ESPN Tax added onto my cable bill when I don't even want it. Many I know are fleeing cable so they DO NOT have to pay for things like this.

What about those who don't want channels like MTV, BET, MSNBC, DISNEY, or other channels that I think are stupid an I don't watch? Do nerds on Slashdot not like sports? Granted, some content on ESPN sucks, but some nerds like me, and my coworkers like to watch sports on ESPN. The problem will only be fixed by cable and satellite providers allowing people to pick and choose what channels they want, not by eliminating channels based on minority opinion.

Whistleblower Claims NSA Spied On Everyone, Targeted Media

nikomen Re:Well, duh (717 comments)

That's why it is news. Sadly, every generation seems to need to learn first hand that the government that says "trust us and don't ask questions" can't be trusted and should be questioned.

I know I'll get voted down for this, but what about some of the people who voted for Obama because they trust him and don't care about asking the questions?

I'm not saying that everyone did that, but what about those who said "I won't have to worry about buying gas..." and other things?

What about fixing the financial crisis? He says he's going to get us out of it by increasing the budget deficit and spending money. Shouldn't there be a little more questioning of what he wants to do?

Best Color Scheme For Coding, Easiest On the Eyes?

nikomen Re:Probably not colors (763 comments)

I concur. A while ago I purchased a couple cheap LCDs. I noticed that the LCDs at my university were easier on my eyes than my home LCDs. I sold my LCDs to my parents who I knew wouldn't be on the computer for any long lengths of time. I bought a couple HP LCDs that were recommended to me and they make a world of difference. This isn't an ad for HP, just simply stating that cheaper LCDs probably cause some kind of eye strain compared to a little more pricey (yet not horribly expensive) LCDs.
