Google Maps To Charge For API Usage

nkh (141 comments)

With OpenStreetMap, you can clone the maps (get dumps and install the software) and use them on your own servers. If you're serious about using maps on web sites, you either give Google a few bucks (with the special API for those who wants to pay) or you use your own servers. On the browser, you can install special libraries like leaflet to have pretty maps like Google.

Firefox 8.0 Beta Available

nkh Re:are you kidding me? (305 comments)

I installed Firefox 7.0 recently because I needed a SQLite manager and it's available as an add-on. But I'll stay with Chrome for the moment to browse the web, it's fast, stable and has all the features I need.

.NET Gadgeteer — Microsoft's Arduino Killer?

nkh Re:Not a chance. (241 comments)

The Arduino IDE can be used on Windows, Mac and Linux. If I want to try this Gadgeteer, I would have to install Windows and some kind of Visual Studio. The last time I installed Windows it took me a whole afternoon and I wasted a lot of time fixing all kind of problems and had to fight their serial number scheme (even when my copy was valid). I'll also say that this project will most likely be killed in less than a year so I don't know why I would waste my time with it.

What Do I Do About My Ex-Employer Stealing My Free Code?

nkh Re:Lawyer (545 comments)

If 100% of the code was written inside the company then they own the copyright and can do whatever they want with it

It depends on his contract with the company. It's not "their code" automatically.

Book Review: Android User Interface Development

nkh Re:Objective-C is easy - frameworks take time (111 comments)

Don't forget that with the new Objective-C 2.0, reference counting is a thing of the past thanks to auto-released objects, and properties which are automagically created for you. Objective-C may not be the easiest OO language, but it sure is easier than ever (and I am an Android fan BTW).

King's Quest III Remake Released

nkh Engine (121 comments)

Somehow related but is there an open-source, cross-platform adventure game engine scriptable with a language like Lua. I haven't found one yet and always wished I could write new adventures for Guybrush Threepwood (or create somethin else completely new ). Most of the existing projects are using closed-source win32-only engines which is disappointing. I could help such a project if there is one.

Can Android Without Dalvik Avoid Oracle's Wrath?

nkh Re:Go language (264 comments)

I've said this a thousand times. Android would be the perfect testbed for golang. It's statically typed, small, and its syntax is easy to learn and to use.

Can Android Without Dalvik Avoid Oracle's Wrath?

nkh Re:Moot (264 comments)

Apple is actually merging both interfaces in Mac OS 10.7 (Lion) with the Launchpad. They want to converge the 2 experiences for some reasons.

Pirated App Sold On Mac App Store

nkh Re:Huh? (334 comments)

Thank you my good man for correcting this young fellow with such a high ID number. I'm not english at all and was very curious at your suggestion, but I knew that the internet would settle your disagreement once and for all, for it seems that "In American English go is sometimes followed directly by a bare infinitive" (source).

No, I'm not drunk.

Android Passes Symbian As Most-Shipped Mobile Platform

Same thing in Europe with the 12 or 24 month contract. My 29€ Android phone is available and affordable for most people, the iPhone is not.

In France, Hadopi Reporting Begins, With (Only) 10,000 IP Addresses Per Day

nkh Re:Dear companies, (376 comments)

Thank you! I don't plan to be the next Hendrix, or make money out of it, but I will practice hard. Even though I've only been playing the guitar for a month, I already have a lot of fun (and my wife and her father both know the guitar well enough to help me, what more could I ask for?)

In France, Hadopi Reporting Begins, With (Only) 10,000 IP Addresses Per Day

nkh Re:Dear companies, (376 comments)

This is the part that makes me cringe. Music theory is mostly chords and scales glued together, a bit like software patents. I can't believe that copyright can still be used up to 70 years after an author's death.

In France, Hadopi Reporting Begins, With (Only) 10,000 IP Addresses Per Day

nkh Dear companies, (376 comments)

Dear SACEM and record companies selling stuff in France,

Because of the HADOPI law and the way you treated your potential customers for the past years, because of the fact that I have to pay a "copyright" tax on every blank media I buy, and because I've been offered a guitar, I'm pissed off to the point I'll do something tangible in my life.

TV has already been replaced mostly by books, tabletop games, and a few YouTube videos every other week. As for music, I'm learning the guitar, I don't need you anymore, I won't give you my money anymore, it's over, I'll make my own music and entertain my family by myself.

Also, fuck you...

Promised Microsoft Tablet 'No Thicker Than Sheet of Glass'

nkh Re:will believe when i see it (352 comments)

Cool stuff like Courier (vaporware) or the Kin (dead project, cost 1 billion dollars). I agree that Apple makes shiny products from existing technology, but at least I can use those.

Blizzard Boss Says Restrictive DRM Is a Waste of Time

nkh Re:Call me a fanboi or whatever but... (563 comments)

Yes, if the authentication servers crash

Or shut down forever. I have 20 years-old games that I still play. Can Blizzard swear on the US Constitution that their authentication servers will be available for free in 20 years? I don't think so.

Scientist Infects Self With Computer Virus

nkh Re:Proves nothing (393 comments)

a computer virus can be transmitted from an implanted computer to an external computer.

He infected "something" external to a computer, like floppies (during the 70s and 80s), USB keys and CD-Roms (90s and now), and even other computers on the internet. But it's in his own skin, therefore it must be new and scary.

IBM's Patent-Pending Traffic Lights Stop Car Engines

nkh Re:And in other news... (423 comments)

In 20 years of driving, only the emergency vehicle one. I've never had any of those other situations

In 5 years of driving in the south of France, I've had this kind of situation happening at least once a week. This IBM patent would kill me if it was in my car.
