Leave a Message, Go To Jail

nzap Re:America, land of the "free". (486 comments)

Uhm, not in the UK it isn't - there are no laws forbidding you from photographing or videoing the police while on duty....

Members of the public and the media do not need a permit to film or photograph in public places and police have no power to stop them filming or photographing incidents or police personnel.

Source: The police themselves! http://www.met.police.uk/about/photography.htm

Which makes it even worse that people are routinely arrested for it. What was your point again?

Yeah, you caught that one; but actually, W = watt. You're supposed to make it lowercase when you spell it out.

Feds Help You Find Your Fastest Internet Service

nzap Re:YRO, RLY? (163 comments)

Why is this exactly in Your Rights Online? Are /.ers so afraid of entering their ZIP code anywhere?

Some people believe that broadband is a right. At the very least, it is a sign that we're not an undeveloped nation. Access to communication can help citizens become more informed and involved (whether it actually does is another question). Unfortunately, many people across the US have limited or no options. I'm one of those people with only one option.

Try reading that again. "There are thought to be 50 billion exoplanets, 500 million of which are probably orbiting within their stars' habitable zones."

BitTorrent Ponders Releasing World ISP P2P Speed Report

nzap Re:Legal BitTorrent (156 comments)

I can imagine a couple reasons why BitTorrent might be throttled. First, I'd bet BitTorrent users are sending and receiving a lot more traffic than the average user. ... If BitTorrent users want faster speeds, I'd recommend finding ways to make the BitTorrent landscape less populated by illegal warez. ... But, until that happens, I really don't care if ISP throttle or cut BitTorrent traffic entirely. ...

Or perhaps ISPs should actually provide the bandwidth that they advertise (not to mention "unlimited" data transfer)?

A Car You Can Drive With Your Thoughts

nzap Re:I drive with my thoughts all the time (137 comments)

Thanks for explaining, I missed the joke at first.

On a related topic, there already exist controllers that use brain impulses. How is this situation special? I'm assuming it's already possible to make cars completely using digital logic inputs to replace mechanical functions, if you had a car like that, you could just hack a game controller into the car.

Seems like old news.

US Gov't Mistakenly Shuts Down 84,000 Sites

nzap Re:Hey, it works in Afghanistan (296 comments)

I'm not disputing that there was a significant amount of deaths, but I do take offense when people say "facts" so confidently, but can't be bothered to spend 10 seconds looking it up. The reliable sources say around 100,000 deaths. The only figures that are greater than a half million were found by surveying people on "whether they knew someone who died", while the ~100,000 death figures are based on actual records which also take into account unreported deaths.

US Gov't Mistakenly Shuts Down 84,000 Sites

nzap Re:This raises an interesting question... (296 comments)

You could say the same thing about any crime. As soon as someone is accused, the media and their masses start churning up a storm. And anyway if someone is convicted, I don't see why we bother ever letting them out of prison, since they're treated worse than second class citizens anyway.

Number of Facebook Friends Linked To Anxiety

nzap Re:This just in: (144 comments)

Your situation says nothing. The study doesn't show "You have anxiety iff (for the uninitiated, read: 'if and only if') you have a large number of Facebook friends". But I guess it's been discussed a million times on slashdot about anecdotes and interpreting studies and nothings going to change.
