Amazon.com: Earth's Biggest Wine Cellar?

oh-dark-thirty Re:But Amazon only ships it to 3 states (118 comments)

I live in RI, where the law is so vaguely written that most online liquor sellers won't ship there, but I managed to find a couple that will...my wine shipments from wtso.com are always sent FedEx, and I always have to sign for them. Since I'm never home to sign, I have them held for pickup at a Kinkos that's on the way home from work. Works great for me; I get wines I can't get locally, and feel like a boss for subverting the dumbass law.

FCC To Allow Cable Companies To Encrypt Over-the-Air Channels

oh-dark-thirty Re:Fuck (376 comments)

Pay for it, sure....through the nose, not so much. Cable bills are increasing at a rate far higher than inflation (yes we can blame the content providers to some degree), the cablecos do not offer consumer-friendly packages beyond the tantalizing "intro deals", their DVR's are pure crap, their customer service is fair at best, and they offer a poor value.

FCC To Allow Cable Companies To Encrypt Over-the-Air Channels

oh-dark-thirty Re:My guess (376 comments)

They can already do de-installs remotely in my area with addressable switchable filters. I cut the cord a couple months ago, (keeping the internet of course), and there was a slight delay of a week or so before they terminated the signal...nobody had to come out, it was all done from the CO.

Proposed Posting of Clients List In Prostitution Case Raises Privacy Concerns

There was never any proven link between the AMPs and trafficking, it just was the strawman they used to set up the bill.

It's hard to assume anything when the stream you're deep-packet-inspecting is encrypted.

Curt Schilling's 38 Studios Struggling Financially

oh-dark-thirty Re:Nice Job 38 Studios... (158 comments)

There was an attempt in the legislature to cap the amount of money available to any one company, and it would have succeeded if the EDC Director Keith Stokes (who resigned last week) hadn't persuaded them to "hold off a little while, we're working on something".

oh-dark-thirty Re:As a RI'er (158 comments)

Fellow RIer here... The best strategy as a resident would probably have been to invest in the bonds themselves, if possible...it would have been the perfect hedge. Heads, we win...tails, we don't lose.

Verizon To Kill All Unlimited Data Plans

oh-dark-thirty Re:Still the best coverage in the US (331 comments)

I should not be responding to an AC, but please show me just ONE successful communist regime, past or present, where all citizens had an equitable standard of living.

Verizon To Kill All Unlimited Data Plans

oh-dark-thirty Re:Before everyone gets upset about this... (331 comments)

My issue with data caps is the effect it has on innovation. What good is Netflix, Pandora, et.al. on a mobile device if you can't take advantage of them?

Verizon To Kill All Unlimited Data Plans

oh-dark-thirty Re:Just Called Verizon (331 comments)

FoxFi can fix that little $30 problem for free. As long as you keep the tethering to a reasonable level they won't bother you.

Have you tried FoxFi for your tethering needs? It works fine on my non-rooted G Nex.

USPS To Ban International Shipping On Lithium Ion Powered Gadgetry

oh-dark-thirty Re:Canada will keep the USPS alive (131 comments)

>>And it looks to be an ICAO rule, which means every country is affected (but only internationally - local laws can override ICAO if it stays in-

I wonder what this will mean for things like Li-poly batteries used in R/C vehicles, etc that are often airmailed from China. Now they will have to go by boat?

Israel Passes Photoshop Law To Combat Anorexia

oh-dark-thirty Re:Too late. (488 comments)

Wish I had mod points. Most people have no idea that both people co-existed in relative harmony for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Not only that, there's some indication the "Palestinians" have converted their faith twice...once to Christianity during the Byzantine era, and then eventually to Muslim when the Ottomans took over...

US Air Force Can 'Accidentally' Spy On American Citizens For 90 Days

oh-dark-thirty Re:Yep, more of the same (200 comments)

I talk to many people throughout the day, and occasionally the topic turns to politics...to a person, everyone I speak to is equally disgusted with the state of the state/nation...and when I implore them to "just vote for the other guy, it doesn't matter if they are a tree stump...we need change", they almost universally agree that's not a terrible idea, and they promise to give it a shot. I know it may not amount to anything, but I'm doing my part. I write to my critters (local and national), and I try to get the word out about alternative candidates. I also use my 'dirty underwear' analogy...imagine the President as your clothing; you change them every 4 or 8 years, and are guaranteed a new set after wearing them a maximum of twice. Now imagine Congress as your underwear, shouldn't you be changing them at LEAST as often as your clothes?

Hulu To Require Viewers To Have Cable Subscriptions

oh-dark-thirty Re:No it won't (648 comments)

At that point I'll just stop using Hulu. And I'm almost ready to tell Cox to take their digital cable box and stick it up their corporate ass.

Do it! You may end up feeling as liberated as I do...and, you will give yourself a $100+/month raise..

Hulu To Require Viewers To Have Cable Subscriptions

oh-dark-thirty Re:In that case... (648 comments)

Already done all that, but it was the sports thing (NFL in particular) that kept me wired... However, just last week I said 'screw it, I'll live fine without' and cancelled my cable TV. I can get all the major networks OTA. The only thing I'd be missing is ESPN MNF, and with that crew who really cares? (Yes, Jaws is gone but Gruden still gets on my nerves.)

I was fully expecting the rep to attempt an bundle upsell (or at least send me to retentions), but nope, I was cheerfully disconnected.

As far as fairness to content providers and/or the legality of the above methods goes, my position is they should have thought of that when they were implementing DRM, adding ads to what was originally sold as an ad-free alternative to OTA, restrictive licensing, requiring consumers to re-purchase their content for multiple devices, and generally hitting the consumer for whatever they could get away with. I've spent tens of thousands over the years on music, movies, games, and other forms of entertainment and will continue to spend... but it will now be on my terms until they stop screwing us.
