Dell Demos 5K Display

ohieaux Re:in the meantime : (204 comments)

My Yoga 2 has a 3200x1800 display. It is practically useless as many applications cannot scale correctly. With windows 8 on there, it's rarely used. I've not found decent Linux distro that works well, either. I'll stick with 1080.

Dell Demos 5K Display

ohieaux Re:Same reason blu-ray didn't take off (204 comments)

HD content, for video, is a lot of data for minimal increased information. Increasing pixel density provides no additional information if added pixels are below the threshold of perception.

Given the option, I'll watch HD over SD, but I can follow all the action on SD.

Google Serves Old Search Page To Old Browsers

ohieaux Re:A solution to a problem (152 comments)

Been using netvibes as a replacement. It imported my xml export of igoogle and that built about 20% of the old page. I've got it about 60% serviceable. Much of the content is in embedded webpages and that seems to work OK.

I know, I know it's not really needed in a modern OS, but I don't want to give it up.

New Windows Coming In Late September -- But Which One?

ohieaux Re:Already? (251 comments)

... It works well with a touch screen but sucks for anyone without it.

Actually, I bought a Yoga Pro 2 with WIn8 (now 8.1) and I find the touch interface useless when I have a keyboard and mouse. Only with the use of 3rd party utilities can I control Windows 8.1 enough to use the computer. But, I've found myself using my old netbook that I put Mint on. It's a shame when a small, slow and old computer is now more usable.

Scientists Baffled By Unknown Source of Ozone-Depleting Chemical

ohieaux Re:Easy, India or China (303 comments)

Why did "mega-corporate bitch" Obama introduce new carbon emissions rules in June that will cost energy producers a fortune?

I'm pretty sure the "fortune" will be paid by the common folk, and go to the corporations making green products. And, I'm guessing these "green" companies are held by the 1%

Amazon's eBook Math

ohieaux Re:Corporate lies! (306 comments)

Seems like Amazon might be fishing for authors to self publish and take the 70% of the $9.99. I'm sure Amazon would be glad to take a few extra percent to proof, layout and market the ebook for an author.

Lots Of People Really Want Slideout-Keyboard Phones: Where Are They?

ohieaux Re:Where are the buggy whip dealers? (544 comments)

I never defined the population. If we define the population as survey respondents, we know rho.

Lots Of People Really Want Slideout-Keyboard Phones: Where Are They?

ohieaux Re:Where are the buggy whip dealers? (544 comments)

Yes, you're dealing with a binomial distribution (yes/no). As long as the hypothesis is not near 0 or 1, you should be able to get a "reasonable" estimate of the population proportion around 50% (like +/- 14%). YMMV

AT&T To Use Phone Geolocation To Prevent Credit Card Fraud

ohieaux Re:Stupid (228 comments)

I absolutely pull out my AT&T sim card before traveling. I've seen too many stories of people getting gouged by US cellphone companies.

This sounds like a disaster for someone trapped overseas. It sounds more like a way for AT&T to force customers into the trap of using their cell phone overseas.

Microsoft Won't Bring Back the Start Menu Until 2015

ohieaux Re:flame away, but... (516 comments)

...if you try using Win 8 without a touch screen for long enough you'll smash the screen anyway.

I'm not sure about that. I have a Windows 8.1 laptop with a touch screen. I never use the touch screen.

Once I got a Start Menu replacement (Classic Shell) and disabled all but the most hidden ways to launch some Windows 8 full screen apps, I can use it quite productively as a real computer. Otherwise, it's a shiny tablet for watching videos and fumbling at fake screen keyboards with.

Besides, my Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 is a much better tablet.

Microsoft: Start Menu Returns, Windows Free For Small Device OEMs, Cortana Beta

ohieaux Re:Gee, so only a year of screaming (387 comments)

I've had my Lenovo Yoga Pro 2 for a few months now and I find that I have to remind myself it has a touch screen. There have been zero cases where I needed the touch screen. Maybe if I was stuck in Metro, but Classic Shell has allowed me to never see that. I cannot figure out why a 3200x1800 screen should only allow one application.

Microsoft Releases Free Edition of OneNote

ohieaux Re:Where's the data stored? (208 comments)

I can't use OneDrive on my 8.1 computer without using a "Microsoft Live" log in. So, this is a deal breaker for OneNote.

Microsoft Releases Free Edition of OneNote

ohieaux OneNote and OneDrive (208 comments)

It looks like you are supposed to sync your OneNotes through OneDrive. Since OneDrive doesn't work with Windows 8.1, this seems like a deal breaker.

I know you can use a public Microsoft account to log in to 8.1 and use OneDrive. But seriously, who would do that? Need to cancel my Sky..err..OneDrive

It's True: Some People Just Don't Like Music

ohieaux What Percentage of Adults are Deaf? (268 comments)

I've seen estimates from the US government at 2%. Sounds like 1-3% wouldn't be able to hear music anyway. Didn't RTFA, perhaps they accounted for that.

Apple's Messages Offers Free Texting With a Side of iPhone Lock-In

ohieaux Re:Huh? (179 comments)

Wife and I have a family plan with separate data and shared minutes. AT&T wants $30/month for the a texting plan. Even at $0.20/text, we don't come close to $30.

Adjusting GPAs: A Statistician's Effort To Tackle Grade Inflation

ohieaux It's not that complicated (264 comments)

Really, I've been proposing that each GPA be presented with the average GPA for students taking the same class sections. For some students, a 3.5 would be weak (if the average student got a 3.9). For others, it might be outstanding (if the average was a 3.2).

This also makes it more likely that students will take courses with challenging grades. If all a professor gives is A's I can't raise my effective GPA. But, a professor that gives a C+ average gives me the opportunity to decrease my denominator.
