Microsoft Boasts of Tiny Energy Saving With IE

olivier69 Re:It adds up (243 comments)

Yes, but *time* adds up too ! I'd like to see the *total* consumption needed to run the benchmarks or render the pages. If IE is slower, not a surprise it consumes less instantaneous power. But in this case it would consume the power for a longer time.

Ubuntu Tablets: Less Jarring Than Windows 8?

olivier69 Re:Hey, Shuttleworth, Listen up (179 comments)

I'd mod you +1 Funny but I'm not speaking of Unity here, only of the following sentence about the switch from tablet mode to desktop mode :

just introduces window management, and it also introduces things like menus and dialog boxes

It's quite clever, more than the Metro solution, and could be adopted by more desktop environments.

Ubuntu Tablets: Less Jarring Than Windows 8?

olivier69 Re:Hey, Shuttleworth, Listen up (179 comments)

Didn't read TFA, did you ? Well it's /. ... The point is : he's not mixing tablet apps and desktop apps like Windows 8. If you look at the video you'll see that if you use your tablet as a tablet, you see tablet UIs. But if you plug your tablet to a keyboard / mouse, the apps switch to desktop mode. That seems really nice.

Stubborn Intel Graphics Bug Haunts Ubuntu 12.04

olivier69 Re:What they are actually reporting an Issue. (320 comments)

Oh, and I WILL be modded down for this, and it WILL validate my point even more.

Good strategy for your karma, but now I can say your point is INVALID.

PayPal Starts Bug Bounty Program

olivier69 Re:Bugs? (39 comments)

1) "software" isn't static, so newer bugs can be introduced 2) even properly written and managed software depends on libraries, compilers, systems, all of which can have bugs

Why is a manufacturer needed at all ? If I were quadriplegic, I'd build myself an appropriate controller. Oh, wait...

Remote Exim Exploit In the Wild

olivier69 Re:Exim - POP3/IMAP client for Linux? (90 comments)

Huh? Don't you mean POP3/IMAP server? Because the client is called a "Mail User Agent".

But a POP3/IMAP server is rather an MDA. An SMTP server is an MTA.

How Can I Tell If My Computer Is Part of a Botnet?

olivier69 To recover bandwidth... (491 comments)

I noticed on the Linksys' log that the laptop was making seemingly random connections to high-numbered ports on various IPs. I did a nslookup on the IPs to see that they were all either in Canada or US, with Comcast and other ISP addresses

Hey dad, you see that donkey icon in the system tray, next to the time ? Now right click on it and choose "Quit".

Windows 7 Hard Drive and SSD Performance Analyzed

olivier69 Re:Failure to compare with XP (248 comments)

Why did they fail to compare performance with Windows XP?

Because Vista was really slower than XP, and 7 is only a little bit faster than Vista (but still a lot slower than XP). That's why it was not in the benchmarks. Marketing...
If you search for XP vs Vista vs 7 (and, why not, vs Linux) disk/networking benchmarks, you'll see what I mean.
