The First Particle Physics Evidence of Physics Beyond the Standard Model?

opusman Mixed feelings (97 comments)

Honestly, I really love the Starts With a Bang blog, and have been reading it for years.

But I do have to wonder why every single post is announced on /. these days.

We already have RSS, we subscribe, we know about it. By the time /. has caught up I've already read it, usually 24 hours ago.

Is /. getting a paid for these posts? Inquiring minds want to know.

opusman Relevance to programmers? (641 comments)

There's nothing in that list (with the possible exception of "being forced to use a specific technology") that wouldn't apply to just about any worker.

Windows 8 Killing PC Sales

opusman Sales are one metric but not the only one (1010 comments)

I'm more interested in how many people are using PCs - I couldn't really care less how many new PCs are sold.
PCs last longer than they used to. Single-threaded performance isn't increasing anymore and multiple threads aren't being used that much, meaning performance gains are no longer a major reason for upgrades.

Also, a lot of what would have been laptop sales are now tablet sales.

Ask Slashdot: What Is Your Favorite Monitor For Programming?

opusman Re:27" FTW (375 comments)

It depends what you do and how you work I guess. For me, two monitors is ideal - IDE maximized on one, and help file / reference emails / IRC windows etc on the other.

Remember though that current 30" monitors have the same horizontal res (2560) as the 27s - only the vertical res is (slightly) higher.

Ask Slashdot: What Is Your Favorite Monitor For Programming?

opusman 27" FTW (375 comments)

Dell U2711 or similar. 2560x1440 for great number of pixels, and if you want to use a higher DPI you still get a decent amount of information on screen.

I've tried 30" monitors and they were just too big, but for me 2x27" is perfect.

Australian Police Warn That Apple Maps Could Get Someone Killed

opusman Re:Apple bashing (452 comments)

This actually is pretty stupid though. When you're driving in the country in Australia it's not like there are thousands of different main roads leading to a multitude of destinations. Once you get away from the east coast it's pretty sparsely populated and the major towns are signposted from hundreds of kilometres away. You would have to pretty wilfully ignore both the road signage and common sense to turn off the main road.

These 19th Century Postcards Predicted Our Future

opusman Re:explaining our world to a 19th century person.. (157 comments)

The 1880s were still deely gripped by puritanism, social stratification as being a good thing, institutionalized racism, and a very narrow and rigid view of what was considered "acceptable", and "proper".

Sounds just like the USA circa 2012!

Crowd-funding effort to trial new cancer treatment

opusman opusman writes  |  about a year and a half ago

opusman (33143) writes "In a possible first for the crowd-funding model, researchers at the University of Uppsala in Sweden are attempting to raise money to take a promising new cancer treatment to human trials. Much of the research has been released in the public domain so no pharmaceutical company is interested in funding the research, and even Apple (who would seem to be an obvious source of funds given that Steve Jobs died of a cancer this treatment could have helped with) are disinterested in contributing."
