Ask Slashdot: SIM-Card Solutions In North America?

patchouly Speak Out! (146 comments)

Try the 7-11 "Speak Out" sim card. The sim card is $10 and can be used in most modern phones. Then you buy minute cards. The best part is instead of the minutes only being active for one month, they are good for a whole year. So, buy a $25 card and you have an emergency phone that has minutes for a year.

The Case Against Gmail

patchouly I'm confused. (435 comments)

I use Outlook to check my Gmail account (among others). I've never had any issues with it in the past nor currently. Pop in the info and it sets it up automatically. Same thing goes with my iPad, Samsung Aceii Phone and my old Blackberry. Never any issues at all. As with the OP, I've had Gmail since the beginning and I haven't noticed any changes (to be fair, I never check my email with my browser so changes there would have gone unnoticed). I have to wonder what sort of third part programs the author was having trouble with.

Why iOS 7 Is Making Some Users Feel 'Sick'

patchouly Come on! (261 comments)

If you can't use a device without getting nauseous, then don't use it. I like the new effects. Companies can't build all devices, keeping those with vestibular disorders in mind.

Brain Zapping Improves Math Ability

patchouly About time! (202 comments)

Zapping the stupid people? I'm all for it! Do we really need to pretend it will help with their math skills though? Can't we just do it because it's fun?

RCMP Says Terror Plot Against Canadian Trains Thwarted

patchouly That title has quite a spin on it. (170 comments)

The title fails to mention the fact that it was the Muslim community, up here, that turned the two guys in. Had nothing to do with the FBI. A few men, in the Mosque that they went to, heard about the plan and reported it to the RCMP.

ZDNet Proclaims "Windows: It's Over"

patchouly Re:Whats the alternative? (863 comments)

I've been using computers since the 80's. I've seen TONs of changes and used many OSes. IMO, Windows 8 is a great! I like the clean bar with no Start Button (In fact, it's even easier because all you have to do is point your mouse down there and click to bring up the menu). The "Metro Screen" is really just a fancy start menu. Click on the desktop icon and you are back to your normal desktop. Point to the lower left corner and you can access your fancy, cool new start menu (Metro Screen). Folks really need to learn to use the system before complaining about it.

Shortly after this all falls apart and some folks become rich and others lose their life savings, I think this will all make for a great movie! "Bitcoin; The Movie" ;)

Microsoft Blames PC Makers For Windows Failure

patchouly Re:I like Windows 8 (913 comments)

Actually, I work on my server during the day and often have multiple windows open (I run a dual screen set up). During my down time, I do a lot of music recording and have a full home studio set up. If you start looking at the "Metro" screen as a fancy start menu, it really is just a decorative upgrade. Not anything to freak out about.

Microsoft Blames PC Makers For Windows Failure

patchouly I like Windows 8 (913 comments)

I know. I'm probably the only one. It really is simple and I have no idea why everyone is having a hard time. The system is identical to Windows 7 only the boring "Start Menu" has been replaced by the "Start Screen" with "Live tiles". It's turned one of the drab features into something cool. Other than that (without having a touch screen), it is the same as Windows 7. It starts up on the "Start Screen". You can either click on a tile to choose an activity or you can click on the "Desk Top" tile to go to your usual desk top. If folks are having a hard time understanding that, they probably should not be using a computer.

When Was the Last Time You Used a Landline Phone?

patchouly Land Lines Are Outdated. (329 comments)

I made the switch over a year ago. Got an "unlimited, region free long distance and local plan" for only $60 a month. Bought a Home phone that can connect to both a land line or a bluetooth. Now, When my cell phone rings, I can pick up with my home phone. If I need to go out, I grab the cell and take it with me. Why pay for a home phone when your cell is with you anyway?

Canada To Stop Producing Pennies In 2013

patchouly Good Riddance! (362 comments)

I see a lot of people arguing about the value of the penny. Discussing whether it's worth more than a penny or less than a penny, etc. Truth is, I could care less. All I know is that it is a worthless coin, to a consumer. It is only taking up space in our pockets. Heck, it takes a hundred of them just to make one stinking dollar! No...Good riddance to the penny, I say. I'll gladly pay the (maximum) 4 cents per purchase, to not ever have to deal with a pocket full of useless coins, again (until we set our sights on the nickel, that is).

With Pot Legal, Scientists Study Detection of Impaired Drivers

patchouly Re:0% (608 comments)

In the case of THC, you would need a "smoked recently" and "Haven't smoked today", level. However, if a cop can tell you are stoned, then you should be driving.

With Pot Legal, Scientists Study Detection of Impaired Drivers

patchouly 0% (608 comments)

This one's easy. No amount is safe for driving. I think it should be the same for alcohol as well. If you drink or smoke, you shouldn't drive. Simple as that. Then there are no worries about blood levels etc. If you have any in your system, you are in trouble. Just to frame this, I should add that I drink occasionally and used to smoke pot (haven't done it since my Daughter was born; if it was legal though...) So it's not like I'm a prude.
